Clinical Social Worker | Therapist
Hello! Thanks for visiting my profile. I am a Clinical Social Worker specializing in children with mood/behavioral issues, as well as with the parents on various parenting struggles, teenagers with self-esteem, bullying and school/peer related stress issues. I also work with couples and relationship struggles. I strive to create a comfortable, non-judgemental, yet, casual and friendly environment. I have a special interest in Mindfulness and Meditation, incorporating guided imagery, breathing and even yoga stretches with traditional therapy techniques. Now, I am not your typical therapist. I like to get creative with interventions, not just worksheets and talk therapy. I incorporate movement, music, art and even yoga into my sessions. I frequently use humor and make my clients laugh, because laughter is therapy in itself! It is not uncommon to see me on the floor coloring or doing art projects with my little clients, gossiping about the latest hollywood saga with my teens, and chatting comfortably or even sharing some of my own personal stories with my clients. It is important for me to show you that I am human too! I am a firm believer in solution-focused and strength-based approaches in my sessions. I believe that everyone has an inner good, something to be proud of, and I want you to let that shine! I also incorporate CBT, experiential therapy, talk therapy and exposure therapy elements into sessions. I am extremely flexible and will work with each individual needs of my clients to promote a happy, healthy and fulfilled life.

Heal from the Past and Restore Your Joy
Therapy in Lake Zurich, Illinois
If you have a complicated relationship with someone you love or feel like you're fighting an internal battle and can't take the stress anymore, then you have come to the right place. I can help you find peace again. In my approach to therapy, I take your lead as you share your story, and I gently guide you from there. Together, we will deepen your understanding of yourself and how you have arrived where you are today. This is where the healing begins. I've had the privilege of joining numerous others in their journey to healing, and I can help you too. I'm highly experienced in treating anxiety and depression, and I also take a special interest in those who have experienced narcissistic abuse and/or emotional abuse by a parent or significant other. I also have an extensive background in working with teenagers and young adults with a wide range of emotional and behavioral difficulties. When the time is right for you, I invite you to make that first call! We will then take it one step at a time - together.

Do you find yourself repeatedly drawn into the same frustrating emotional patterns and relationships despite your best intentions and efforts to change? Perhaps an approach that addresses the underlying meaning of these seemingly irrational behaviors is called for. I believe that honesty about our desires, motives, and feelings is the first step in the process of growth and change. The courage to honestly face previously disowned experiences, while ultimately freeing, is not easily achieved alone, apart from a trusting relationship. It is my privilege to create a safe context for you to examine your life in all its complexity. I am convinced that when shameful and painful experiences can be brought to light, understood and fleshed out, troubling symptoms tend to subside and relationships improve. Most importantly, it often becomes easier to feel a greater sense of agency, freedom, and purpose in life. I believe that therapy can give you the courage to shed unnecessarily rigid and self-defeating ways of being and relating to others and allow you to experience more contentment and hope in the future. I welcome the opportunity to partner with you in this process.

Are you feeling depressed, anxious, or just feel that life is not all you had hoped? Are your relationships unfulfilling? Having difficulty letting go of past hurts? Using sex or the internet to avoid others or painful emotions? Does it seem impossible to "get through" to your adolescent son or daughter, or even your spouse? Maybe it is time for a change. I am a warm, compassionate, and patient professional with over twelve years of experience as a therapist, professor, and supervisor who takes a holistic approach to helping clients understand and overcome their concerns. From the beginning of therapy, I will work with you to develop a relationship that feels authentic and safe so that your concerns, emotional wounds, and disappointments as well as joys, pleasures, and surprises can be meaningfully explored. Within the context of this relationship, we will work together to develop a fresh understanding of your internal world and your relationships with others. Though this process of insight is generally very helpful, I also make use of action-oriented strategies to help you make changes and learn new skills in order to meet your goals.

I believe that we all have our own answers inside of us, and that sometimes we need a listening ear, or some additional support to figure out how we want our lives to be different and more satisfying. As an excellent listener, and one who is empathic and understanding, I have helped many clients achieve their own respective goals in life. I have been working in private practice for over 20 years, and have a lot of experience working with clients presenting with many different life problems. I see adults, teens, and children, in individual therapy, couples therapy, and family therapy. Some of my areas of expertise include depression, relationship issues, parenting issues, grief, adjustment difficulties, job stress, etc. I have a particular area of expertise working with incest survivors, and actually all adult survivors from troubled childhoods. I am EMDR trained, and also use cognitive behavioral therapy in my approach to clients, though I tend to be mostly psychodynamic. I welcome the opportunity to consult with any clients who may be interested in seeking counseling!

Counseling and Psychotherapy for Individuals and Couples
Welcome. My name is Jim Garrett. I'm a licensed clinical professional counselor and psychotherapist, and I provide counseling and psychotherapy services for individuals and couples. To make it easier for you to get started, I offer a free phone consultation. There are lots of very good reasons for people to seek the help of a counselor or therapist. Individual counseling and individual psychotherapy can often be very helpful for people feeling sad, worried, frustrated, angry, confused, stressed, or simply feeling down on themselves. Marriage counseling and couples counseling can often be very helpful for people experiencing difficulties in important relationships or simply feeling that the relationship is not meeting their needs. And these are just a few of the concerns that a therapist can help with. Maybe one of these issues is what brought you here, or maybe you're here out of concern for a family member or friend who could benefit from the help of a therapist. Or maybe your reason for being here is entirely different. Whatever it is, I can assure you that you are in good company. Lots of people call therapists every day for help with a wide range of concerns. If you'd like to give me a call, I'll be more than happy to talk with you.

Mindset: Inspiration for the process of therapy can be drawn from one of the best movie quotes of all time, “No! Try not! Do or Do Not, There is no try.” These are very powerful words telling people, especially to those in therapy that you must either willingly make your own necessary and sometimes critical changes in your life or you don’t. Therapy is about actively regaining control of your personal energy. Therapy is a collaborative approach to healing and well-being between a client and therapist. The therapist helps guide a person into making better life decisions, but the client must intuitively think of new ways of managing their life stressors that they are comfortable starting and maintaining. Clients not willing to make changes for themselves will continue to spin helplessly and hopelessly out of control. The mind is constantly changing; people in therapy must also learn to continually adjust and adapt to new situations while keeping a mindful-eye on their past. Education and Training: Dr. Hurley received his Master of Arts (MA) in General and Theoretical Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in Teaneck, New Jersey. He graduated with a Doctoral Degree (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology at Forest Institute of Professional Psychology (FIPP) in Springfield, Missouri. At FIPP Dr. Hurley specialized in Marriage and Family Counseling. Other areas of training include neuro-psychology, anger management, bio-feedback, and pre-marital counseling. During his doctoral program he worked in a children’s psychiatric hospital. His internship was in community mental health, and he participated in a national study on Schizophrenia. Dr. Hurley’s post-doc residency was in substance abuse and rehabilitation. After his post-doc residency he spent two years in private practice in Libertyville, IL. Dr. Hurley then became the medical director for a Chicago based firm doing home health care delivering mental health therapy to Chicago’s south-side geriatric African-American population who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Dr. Hurley has taught undergraduate students at Robert Morris College in Aurora, IL and graduate students at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He finds teaching to be a change of pace and a way of leading a new generation of therapists into the Health Services Industry. His career path changed when he moved to Knoxville, TN. Dr. Hurley was the Clinical Director for Mental Health for Tennessee’s main intake prison facility. He worked with various criminals making sure that they received the help they needed and to minimize suicide attempts. Dr. Hurley’s stance on his education, training, and career is to always strive to learn more, to do more, and to be the best therapist possible. Therapeutic Stance: My approach to therapy with my clients is multi-faceted. There is no one therapy to fit all. I like to approach issues from a psycho-dynamic, family systems, CBT, Gestalt, existential, and medical stance. When dealing with mental health disorders you have to consider the mind as well as the body for the root of a problem. Therapy needs to be understandable by those who seek help and I have spent years refining my technique to help clients understand the issues they’re facing and the theories on how to resolve said issues. People feel more comfortable and understood if you can talk to them in the various places they are currently. I love to see individuals, couples, and groups in a calm, peaceful, and most importantly neutral environment. I love to make presentations to groups for psycho-educational purposes as well.

I specialize in and successfully work with individuals and couples who want to explore and make changes in areas such as depression, anxiety, addiction and recovery, low self-esteem, relationships, and improving communication. Psychotherapy is a collaboration between the client and the therapist, working together to help you achieve your goals. Individual Psychotherapy My clients are usually adults who are intelligent, questioning, and insightful. They have many strengths and skills but find themselves either facing things they don't want (worry, depression, communication problems) or feeling blocked in achieving things they do want (career change, a good relationship, more self-confidence). We will work together to understand what is going on, how your present situation may have gotten to where it is now, and how you would like to see things evolve in the future. Patterns that were useful or even necessary in earlier parts of your life may be getting your way now. Sometimes the simple act of hearing yourself discuss your thoughts and concerns with a caring, nonjudgmental professional helps untangle some "emotional knots." People are capable of amazing changes and accomplishments; counseling can help you realize the best in yourself. An initial assessment appointment is about 90 minutes long; other counseling sessions after that are 45 to 50 minutes each. Weekly appointments are a good idea, at least in the beginning, in order to build a therapeutic relationship and get some momentum on dealing with your issues. How long a course of counseling lasts depends on a number of factors including how you perceive the problems, their severity and length of persistence, and even such outside elements as childcare or work schedules. A person often "knows" when a problem or situation has been resolved. Couples Counseling Couples who love and care about each other can sometimes experience difficulties. You might realize that it's harder to talk to your partner about your real feelings or concerns. You might notice that arguments (often about the same topics) are getting more intense or happening more frequently. You may be feeling that life events (work-related stress, a new baby, an illness,) have overwhelmed your relationship. You may have tried to work things out together on your own; but the changes don't seem to last very long, or you both end up more angry and frustrated than if you didn't try at all. You might be married, living together, dating, or deciding whether making a serious commitment is what you are looking for. This is where couples counseling can make a difference. With the guidance of a warm, genuine, and experienced counselor, you can develop improved communication skills, learn to set necessary boundaries, learn to clarify your needs & healthy ways to meet them, and practice expressing difficult thoughts and feelings in less explosive ways. You'll be reminded and encouraged about the strengths and positive qualities that brought the two of you together in the first place. The supportive counseling environment makes dealing with the problematic parts more tolerable. Couples counseling will also explore each person's understanding of the family they grew up in and how their familial experiences and expectations mesh with those of their partner. Very frequently, some significant issues are still quite alive in the current relationship; having a map of the "minefields" can help you work things out before they get out of control. An initial couples assessment is about 90 minutes long; subsequent sessions are one hour. The couple and counselor work together to plan the course of the treatment and the goals.

I'm aware of how hard it is to talk about personal problems. You feel vulnerable, confused, embarrassed, angry, afraid, and childlike. You feel stuck at a certain level of understanding or problem solving and can't bounce back. You wish you could talk to someone who won't judge you, but would listen deeply and help you recapture hope and meaning in your life and relationships. I believe I can help. I provide a safe place where you and your partner can understand how your feelings and thoughts affect the ways you act, react, think, feel, and relate. I am interested in hearing your story with all the twist and turns of your personal history. When you share your story I will listen and give you back new meanings so you can learn more about yourself and your partner in a new way. Together we will figure out how to resolve your painful conflicts, discover what triggers your emotional reactivity, explore your life's journey more deeply, and if possible, develop new ways to heal your past and revision your future
