Study links sulfide-producing bacteria and colon cancer in African-Americans
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- A new study reveals that African-Americans have measurable differences in the number and type of bacteria that live in the colon - and those differences are related to their higher-than-average colon cancer risk. The study, reported in the journal Gut , looked at colonic tissue biopsies from 197 African-Americans and 132 non-Hispanic whites collected over a two-year period ending in 2012. The way the brain processes speech could serve as a predictor of early dementia
Early dementia is typically associated with memory and thinking problems but older adults should also be vigilant about hearing and communication problems, suggest recent findings in a joint Baycrest-University of Memphis study. Within older adults who scored below the normal benchmark on a dementia screening test, but have no noticeable communication problems, scientists have discovered a new potential predictor of early dementia through abnormal function ...

Patients Often Reject Drug-Only Psychiatric Treatment
Mental health patients are more likely to reject treatment if it involves only drugs, a new study finds. Some experts believe talk therapy should be the first treatment option for many mental health disorders. The new finding -- from a review of 186 prior studies -- supports that stance, the researchers said. Patients often desire an opportunity to talk with and work through their problems with a caring individual who might be able to help them better face ...

Antibiotics not effective for clinically infected eczema in children
Estimates suggest that 40 percent of eczema flares are treated with topical antibiotics, but findings from a study led by Cardiff University suggest there is no meaningful benefit from the use of either oral or topical antibiotics for milder clinically infected eczema in children. Eczema is a common condition, especially in young children, and affects around 1 in 5 children in the UK. Eczema sometimes gets worse, or flares , and having particular bacteria ...

Immune molecule protects against Zika virus infection in animal models
A molecule naturally produced by the immune system protects mice and monkeys against Zika virus infection, an international team of researchers has found. Administering the molecule, called 25-hydroxycholesterol or 25HC, to pregnant mice reduced Zika virus infection in the fetal brain and protected against Zika-induced microcephaly. The work was supported in part by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases NIAID , a component of the Nation ...
