ITHACA, N.Y. - Researchers in the social sciences have been searching for a holy grail an accurate way to predict who is likely to engage in problematic behavior, like using drugs. Fighting for Our Democracy
I stopped blogging last year because all I wanted to write about was political. Things have gone so far with Mr. Trump that what may have been only political is now personal and psychological. While some psychologists have discussed the narcissistic features evident in Mr. Trump and I certainly don t deny he exhibits those characteristics, the narcissist diagnosis fails to include what I think is most important, and why this election has created such a cha ...

Who's Afraid of GMOs?
Since 2014, 11 people have been killed and hundreds injured by exploding automobile airbags manufactured by Takata , a Japanese company. According to a New York Times article , the company knew about the problem since 2004 but managed to elude regulators by exploiting weak reporting rules. Some car companies may also have known about the issue for many years before it came to light and U.S. federal regulators may have been slow to fully investigate the pro ...

I’m Right, You’re Evil
Imagine you re a passionate supporter of one of our Presidential nominees or at least a fervent believer that if we are to prevent the demise of our beloved country, one or the other of them must not, under any circumstances, become President . How do you view the people who are passionate supporters of the wrong candidate When we believe something to be self-evident, and someone disagrees with us, we can tend to see them the same way Richard Dawkins descr ...

Surviving the Current Presidential Election Experience
Much has been written recently about the negative effects that this election season has been having on American life. Psychotherapists have reported on the numbers of patients for whom this has been a main focus of recent sessions with some talking about little else, and this has certainly been my experience as well. For some patients, there is a comment or two about their feelings about the candidates and what this campaign seems to have spawned in our co ...

Why Politics Makes People Crazy
Your brain evolved to promote survival, so your neurochemicals create a sense of urgency about everything relevant to survival needs. Social needs feel as urgent as physical needs because the survival of your genes depends on it. Politics triggers your happy brain chemicals by creating expectations of your needs being met but it likewise stimulates unhappy chemicals by illuminating obstacles to meeting your needs. You can easily end up with a roller coaste ...

WHO Trauma Care Checklist improves care for injured patients
Injury is responsible for more than 10 percent of the global burden of disease, killing more people each year than HIV, malaria and tuberculosis combined. More than 90 percent of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Injury is also the leading cause of death in adolescents globally. Timely emergency care saves lives and reduces disability, however, there is great global disparity in access to emergency care if fatality rates from severe i ...

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Each dollar a state spends on mental health care cuts roughly 25 cents off its jail expenditures by reducing its inmate population, a new study shows. The findings, published in the journal Social Science Medicine , suggest that 35 of the 44 states analyzed could reduce jail populations by spending more on public inpatient mental health care while maintaining their current level of community mental health care.
