Why do stand-up comedians die young?
Research published this week in the International Journal of Cardiology set out to uncover whether stand-up comedians are more likely to die prematurely than comedic actors and dramatic actors. Perhaps the tears of a clown are justified after all.

Trump's Republic
A number of writers have pointed out the apparent similarities between Donald Trump and the tyrant described in Plato s Republic . This comparison is at once a criticism of Trump and a rebuke of the millions of Americans who have and plan to vote for him. But does the comparison ring true I m not convinced. Yet I think it s illuminating, both about the dangers of a Trump presidency and about the pathologies of the American electorate. First a little backgr ...

Atrocity in the City of Nice: An Act of Clinical Insanity?
BBC News is reporting that Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, who killed more than 80 people during Bastille Day celebrations, apparently had a history of mental illness. The BBC is claiming that he was briefly seen by Chamseddine Hamouda, a psychiatrist apparently based in the Tunisian city of Sousse, 12 years ago. During an interview with the BBC, the psychiatrist explained that he did not think the atrocity in Nice should be blamed on mental illness.

The most inspiring book I've read
It is rare that I am inspired to complete every word of a non-fiction book more common for me to read 100 pages and relegate to the ever-expanding maybe later pile . It is rarer still that I can t help turning the pages of such a book, especially when those pages number nearly 500, and are full of hard-nosed details. But I just completed what may be the most inspiring non-fiction book I have ever read. The book is Walter Isaacson s The Innovators How a gro ...

Models of the Human-Dog Relationship
There is considerable disagreement among ethologists, dog behaviorists, and dog trainers about the meaning and function of dominance, both in the world of dogs themselves and also in the world of closely related canid species such as wolves. See, for example, Marc Bekoff s recent post on this. Some of the debate centers on the extent to which wolf behavior and dog behavior can be compared. Some of the debate centers around whether or not dogs form dominant ...

“Dad, if I get a B I feel like I’ve failed”
Does your college student tell you, If I don t get all As, I ll never get into medical school or I m too embarrassed to go to the fitness center because everyone is in better shape than I am If he feels what he does or how he looks is never good enough, he might be suffering from too much perfectionism . You ve probably heard the song Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie. I think of this song while I provide psychiatric care to college students, who are ...

Musings About Police Violence
I was going to write about something else today the finding from a meta-analysis that artificial surveillance cues do not appear to appreciably increase generosity the effects fail to reliably replicate , but I decided to switch topics up to something more topical police violence. My goal today is not to provide answers to this on-going public debate - I certainly don t know enough about the topic to consider myself an expert - but rather to try and add so ...

Study: Genes May Determine What Diet Works for You
Groundbreaking genetic research has found, for the first time, that your genes may influence how you respond to a specific diet. The latest findings suggest that the way each person s body metabolizes particular types of food is highly individualized. The healthiest food option for one person, may not be the optimal dietary choice for someone else. This research was conducted by William Barrington, Ph.D., a researcher from North Carolina State University i ...

The Opioid Epidemic and Our Children
It s no news that a serious epidemic is taking lives and ruining those it leaves behind. The opioid addiction crisis lays waste to families and communities. Inevitably, children become victims, directly through becoming addicted themselves, but even more frequently, indirectly through the devastation on their families. Only recently has research focused on child impacts. What we are beginning to discover has implications for effective treatments and for pr ...

Rare fungus product reduces resistance to antibiotics
Besides mushrooms such as truffles or morels, also many yeast and mould fungi, as well as other filamentous fungi belong to the Ascomycota phylum. They produce metabolic products which can act as natural antibiotics to combat bacteria and other pathogens. Penicillin, one of the oldest antibiotic agents, is probably the best known example. Since then, fungi have been regarded as a promising biological source of antibiotic compounds. Researchers expect that ...
