We all struggle with issues from time to time. And we all have our unique ways of coping. On occasion a situation comes up that exceeds our abilities to cope. When this occurs, turning to a counselor for assistance is just as necessary as turning to your doctor for help when you have the flu. As a counseling professional I can offer you the tools, resources, and knowledge necessary to help you through your difficult time. Together we will talk through your concerns and worries. As we discuss your situation I will aid you in understanding your concerns more clearly. I will assist you in connecting your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to find meaning in them. And together we will determine what course of action best suits your needs. As the counselor, I will work to establish a helping relationship with you, which offers emotional safety facilitated by an unjudging and unbiased ear. As the client, you will work towards achieving your desired goals for counseling. Together we will take on whatever life has thrown your way, and when you leave counseling you will take with you new insight and new coping skills that you can use throughout your lifetime.
Bio
"Heather N. Smith is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Texas. She obtained a bachelor of science degree in counseling with a minor in psychology through Texas A&M-Commerce. Ms. Smith continued her training and earned a masters degree in education from The University of North Texas (UNT) in August of 2007. While at UNT she participated in advanced play therapy training through The Center for Play Therapy, the world's largest play therapy facility. Ms. Smith completed one of two in school internships through The Center for Play Therapy under the direction of Sue Bratton, LPC, RPT-S, Director of the Center for Play Therapy and Associate Professor at The University of North Texas. Ms. Smith completed a second in school internship through University Behavioral Health (UBH) under the direction of Gary Massey, Director of Outpatient Services. While at UBH she assisted individuals on both the adult and child and adolescent units. For the past nine years Ms. Smith has assisted Dr. Townsend-Parchman, adult psychiatrist, as a crisis intervention assistant and as his operations manager. In talk therapy, Ms. Smith takes a Cognitive Behavioral (CB or CBT) approach and aids clients in their efforts to talk through their concerns while focusing on their thoughts and how these thoughts effect their feelings and behaviors. It is through this process in which she facilitates clients to approach their challenges with new insight and direction. In the summer of 2009 Ms. Smith continued her training in CBT by attending Dr. Aaron T. Beck's training seminar in Cognitive Therapy at the Beck Institute in Philadelphia, PA. Ms. Smith's training and experience allows her to work with children and adults.
