At Acupuncture of Iowa we are a general practice Chinese medicine clinic. That means that we are trained to treat a wide variety of conditions of all types. We commonly treat patients who seek care for problems that other practitioners have not helped. Some of the commonly- and successfully- treated conditions are: fertility problems, allergies, digestive diseases, asthma, women's health problems of all types, pain syndromes such as back, neck, knee, shoulder, ankle, foot, wrist, hand, face, and head pain. We treat migraines and cluster headaches. We also frequently see patients who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. We help with insomnia, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and bipolar illness. Dermatology is often helped with acupuncture, as well as infections such as colds and flu, sinusitis, bronchitis, and things like Lyme disease and other unusual infections. Our herbal medicine is especially effective for viral conditions. We are happy to see patients of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and cultures.

Acupuncture of Iowa is a full-service Chinese medicine clinic providing Oriental Medical diagnosis, acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, meridian therapy, electro- acupuncture, auricular therapy, and cold laser acupuncture, as well as other common ancillary techniques of Chinese medicine. Our environment is relaxing and our staff is personable.

Stacy Kluck, LAc practices with Laura at the clinic. Stacy is in her 5th year of practice and is a graduate of the esteemed Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago. She specializes in Five Element Acupuncture and Kiiko Style.

We are conveniently located in the Towncrest medical area of Iowa City. We can be reached on the Towncrest bus line which stops in front of the clinic. We have plenty of free parking and are completely handicapped accessible.

Education
Laura Christensen has practiced acupuncture since 1992 in Iowa City. She graduated from the New England School of Acupuncture in Boston, in 1984. She also has a master's degree in counseling psychology and has practiced as a psychotherapist. She has nearly 10 years experience as a medical researcher as well.

Laura has studied many approaches to acupuncture, including Master Tung style, Balance Method, Auricular (ear) acupuncture, Korean Hand Therapy, Japanese acupuncture with Miki Shima, and Kiiko Matsumoto style or Japanese acupuncture, as well as the TCM approach. She has taken several graduate level Chinese herbal medicine courses, including taking Sharon Weizenbaum's challenging 2-year Graduate Mentorship program twice.

She has also studied many forms of energy work, including Healing Touch, Reiki II, Bodytalk, Reconnective therapy, and Yuen Chinese Energetics (a form of medical Qi Gong). Laura integrates these into her daily practice as needed.
Bio
Laura is a native of Iowa City, Iowa. Her father was a professor of medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, specializing in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Laura's family includes several other MD and PhD's in science, so she comes from a strong science and medicine family. She has also worked in and around the medical field during all her working life and these many experiences have given her great knowledge of medicine and a sense of self-assurance in dealing with medical issues.

Laura's family are also very involved in music, and she herself was trained as a pianist and cellist. She studied cello at Oberlin Conservatory which pursuing her BA in biology and pre-medical studies at Oberlin College. She graduated from Oberlin in 1982.

Laura then went to the New England School of Acupuncture and studied while working full time at Harvard Medical School's Beth Israel Hospital for two years. Upon finishing her Acupuncture training, she earned a MA in Counseling Psychology at Lesley University, specializing in Holistic approaches to mental health treatment. Again, she worked full time during this master's, running her own business in home repair and cleaning in the Boston area.

In 1986 she was a victim of an another driver and sustained extreme injuries, requiring several months in the hospital and many surgeries and physical therapies. In 1987 she returned to work as a mental health counselor, specializing in the treatment of mental health problems among recovering alcoholics and addicts at the South Shore Council on Alcoholism in Quincy, MA.

In the fall of 1991, Laura returned from Boston to Iowa City. She was immediately hired as a researcher at the University of Iowa in the Department of Psychiatry where she did research on depression and hormones in humans. Soon after beginning there, she was sought out for her acupuncture skills and has practiced ever since. She has constantly sought to improve and refine her skills and understanding of the vast world of oriental medicine.
Memberships
Laura has been a member of the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine since 1994. She is also a member of the Iowa Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. She was a founding member of the Holistic Resource Network of Iowa City and served as it's secretary and treasurer. She is a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Iowa City where she sings in the choir.
