The Hope Program for Adults (Hope) at The Menninger Clinic helps adults with complex psychiatric issues that have hindered their capacity to meet important vocational, personal and interpersonal goals.

Our team uses a patient-centered, personalized approach to treat people with longstanding challenges that have substantially compromised their quality of life or have been unresponsive to other treatments. Patients and families come to Menninger not only because they are in distress, but also because they are seeking a way forward after being stuck in their lives.

The intensive hospital-based program offers a comprehensive approach to treat men and women with:
Mood disorders, including major depressive and bipolar disorders
Anxiety disorders such as generalized and social anxiety disorders
Substance abuse or other addiction disorders
Personality disorders, such as borderline, narcissistic or dependent
Psychotic disorders beyond the acute phase of stabilization
Trauma-related disorders
Our program treats some of the most complicated adult patients at Menninger. They often have received multiple diagnoses in a variety of previous settings as well as multiple courses of treatment, both psychotherapeutic and pharmacological.

With an on-site internal medicine specialist, Menninger also has the expertise to address the medical factors that often accompany this patient population. Our patients also have access to consultants at Baylor College of Medicine.

Personalized Goals
Our experienced interdisciplinary team creates a treatment plan to address each patient’s unique situation and provide the tools needed to help a patient make a successful transition to the next stage of recovery. By understanding what the previous barriers to progress have been and designing a customized approach to address these core issues, the team, which includes the patient, sets a course toward a future filled with hope.

In order to know how to chart this course, patients must understand where they are right now in their lives. Therefore, treatment in Hope begins with a thorough biopsychosocial assessment – with a diagnosis being just the first step. We guide patients as they look at what may be contributing to their lack of progress in treatment as well as their potential strengths that may aid in their recovery.

A comprehensive range of specialty treatment options addresses many behavioral and emotional challenges, including addictions, eating disorders, self-harm/self-injury, suicidality and severe interpersonal dysfunction.

In addition to individual psychotherapy, the treatment plan includes many evidence-based psycho-educational, skills and process groups:
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Group psychotherapy
Dialectic behavioral therapy (DBT)
Family dynamics
Fitness and wellness
Mentalizing
12-step recovery
Relapse prevention and wellness planning
Values and meaning
Treatment occurs in a therapeutic milieu where every encounter and discussion provides opportunities for learning and growth. So, in a very real sense, the patient, the family, the entire staff and the patient’s peers constitute a treatment team.

We encourage families to be involved during the treatment process. Educating the family and the patient about disorders, treatments and relapse prevention is one of our top priorities.
