Practice Information |
You spend years looking for someone who gets you, someone who seems to complete you in so many ways. Sometimes you just can't find that person. Or it seems you always mess it up somehow-- picking the wrong person or picking fights, or unable to let your guard down. Or maybe you do make a life with someone, and then you discover that you're arguing all the time, or not. And you are lonely, empty.
Maybe your relationship is not the issue, except that you feel like all you talk about is your unhappiness with work, or your family, or problems with the children. Or, there's been a loss you can't bounce back from. Your usual resiliency, or the faith you always have been able to turn to, just isn't there.
As humans, we seem to need to give ourselves to things, to love and be loved. It seems it should be simple, and sometimes it is. But sometimes, we find that we keep doing the same things that have never worked before. Or we try and try, but our boss or our spouse keep being disappointed and angry with us. All of us need help sometimes. Things get complicated. We need another set of eyes to see things. We need to talk with someone who's not angry or judging us, someone who can help us figure it out. |

Bio: |
I came to this work more than 25 years ago with a deep sense of how much suffering and struggle take place quietly in people's lives. I came to recognize that people tended to open up with me. And that it felt to me like a rare privilege when they did. I also learned along the way that my efforts to fix things for someone else was rarely as helpful as listening and helping them understand what they were feeling and why they were unhappy.
Because I believe that listening and understanding is so essential to growth, I have adopted an approach that is broadly psychodynamic and relational. That means I focus on how you work as an individual and on the dynamics of your relationship. I help you pay attention to your experience--to what you feel and to what you may be unable to see or hear--to find clues to what is not working. I attend to when you are able to go after what you want and when you inhibit yourself. I help you discover if you may be defending against the emotional vulnerability that would make your relationship more intimate. I help you get better at calming yourself down when you need to, so you can reflect and think through what you need to do. |
