Durham Psychotherapy
Durham Psychotherapy is counselling and psychotherapy clinic that empowers individuals navigating mental health challenges and life transitions, helping them gain deeper insight into themselves and make changes in their lives. We work with individuals across the Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area.
Understanding Anxiety
Anxiety is a natural response to stress, but when it becomes persistent and overwhelming, it can interfere with daily life. It often manifests as excessive worry, restlessness, or physical symptoms like increased heart rate and muscle tension. Without proper care, anxiety can affect your focus, relationships, and enjoyment of life.
Understanding Depression
Depression is more than just feeling sad—it’s a serious mental health condition that can affect every aspect of your life. It often leads to feelings of emptiness, difficulty finding motivation, and a sense of disconnection from the world around you. Recognizing the symptoms and seeking help is a courageous first step toward recovery.
Understanding Trauma
Trauma stems from distressing events like abuse, accidents, natural disasters, or significant loss. These experiences can leave deep emotional and psychological scars, affecting how you view yourself and the world. Trauma impacts everyone differently, but with the right guidance, healing is possible.
Bio
Malik Smith:
In my practice, I believe that you already have the tools you need for your own healing; my role is to help you identify and use those tools. I desire to create a calm and grounded environment where you feel truly heard and deeply understood. By using a trauma-informed approach, I support both individuals and groups, empowering you to become your own main source of support and insight.
Starting therapy is a courageous step, and I understand the hesitation some may feel about opening up to a male therapist. Trust is vital, especially given the societal complexities around masculinity and emotional vulnerability. I want to recognize the strength it takes to seek help and assure you that my practice is a welcoming, non-judgmental space. Having faced my own mental health challenges, I connect deeply with those on a similar journey towards clarity and peace.
