Reading Problems Grades 1-8; Math Grades 2 Through Pre-Alg.
No Contracts; Semi-Retired; Reduced and Flexible Rates
For 35 years, I was the owner and director of the One-to-One Reading Center on Woodley
and Devonshire in Granada Hills, where we worked with children and adults having
reading problems and other educational difficulties, including ADHD, Dyslexia, and
Math. All our work was always on a one-to-one basis, and we never required contracts.
Now I am working part-time out of my residence, where I have added a room addition
specifically for tutoring and educational therapy. Because I have almost no overhead,
I am able to work at rates 50% or more below the going ET rate. I no longer charge
for cancellations, and will work mornings during non-school days and summer, as
well as after school weekdays, till 8:30p.m. I am a lifetime credentialed Elementary
Teacher in addition to my advanced degrees and my Board Certification with AET.
My specialty has always been reading remediation for LD and Dyslexic persons,
especially children age 6 to about 12, though all ages will be considered if their
problems are appropriate to my expertise. For significant problems, it is recommended
that the student attends at least twice a week. Sessions are usually an hour, but
45 minute sessions can be taken for additionally reduced rates.
Education/Training
During my Graduate work, I worked under Dr. John D. McNeil emphasizing both
Special Education and Curriculum and Instruction in my Masters program, and
later, was awarded a Fellowship from 1969-71 to work with Emotionally Disturbed
children at NPI , under the supervision of Dr. Frank Hewett. I wrote my Dissertation
on early reading and gifted children. I was one of the original 10 or 12 members
of the Association of Educational Therapists, before it was an official organization,
and was one of the first to become Board Certified.
Bio
I was born in January, 1941, and attended Fairfax High School, graduating in 1958. I
went to UCLA beginning in the fall of 1958, and eventually earned an Ed.D. in 1976
in addition to a teaching credential, bachelor degree, and Master of Arts. I began
tutoring privately in 1962 while taking a class at UCLA in remedial work at their
Psychology Clinic School. After a successful 10 year practice going to student's
homes, I opened a small remedial clinic in 1972. It was very successful, growing
in 3 years from 7 students to over 50, and we moved to a larger location in 1975,
where we frequently had over 100 students, all on a one-to-one basis. But in the
early 2000's and "No Child Left Behind", the schools required students to attend
their tutoring, and the emphasis on meeting standards changed the goals parents
were seeking, and clientele slowed. In 2005, I sold the building and moved my
practice to my new residence. I do take 2 or 3 travel vacations a year, and enjoy
movies and music, as well as plays. I am willing to work up to about 10-15 hours a week.
