Sharon Schellinger, PhD
EMDR Practitioner
Sharon J Schellinger
I work with children, adults, and couples. My main training is in the psychodynamic orientation, but I also have experience in cognitive-behavioral and brief psychotherapy. In addition to general psychotherapy, I have specific training and experience in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is especially suited to those who have been traumatized, are anxious, or have experienced debilitating loss.
The nature and extent of psychological treatment varies according to the issues involved. In general, treatment entails an identification of problem areas, an increasing understanding of the external circumstances and internal thoughts and feelings that contribute to the difficulties, and an exploration of the clients' strengths suited to addressing their issues. When appropriate, treatment may also involve an exploration of patterns of relationships formed in the past, their influence on current difficulties, and changes the client may want to make to secure more stable relationships in the future.
Bio
I received a PhD in Psychology from the University of Dallas in 1998. I also attended a post-doctorate course of study in Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology. In conjunction with my graduate work, I have treated children at four different venues: at Holiday Children's Center for emotionally disturbed children in Utah, West County Children and Adolescent Services in California, where I also worked at three elementary schools and five Head Start centers. At these sites I provided psychological testing, clinical assessment, play therapy, family therapy, and parent and teacher consultations. I have also worked at the Psychological Services Center as an intern psychotherapist with adults and couples, as a teleminister for suicide prevention, and as group facilitator for terminally ill patients, for survivors of sexual abuse, and for those who have been divorce or widowed. I worked at the Front Street Clinic in Poulsbo, Washington with all ages (individuals, couples, and families) from August of 2002 to July of 2006, at which time I began my on private practice at two locations and am now located at 17791 Fjord Drive NE, Poulsbo, Washington in the complex of offices at Liberty Bay Marina, Suite 138.
