I have experience with adult, child and adolescent populations. I have worked as an individual and family therapist at community mental health clinics in Springfield and Cape Cod. I worked as a behavioral specialist for several years at The Center for School Crisis intervention, an alternative school, in the Springfield/Holyoke area. In addition to private practice, I currently am a crisis clinician on the Psychiatric Assessment Team (P.A.T.) at Cape Cod Hospital. When working with adults I specialize in depression and anxiety disorders. My work with children and adolescents involves behavior modification, coping skills, verbal skills and involvement of the parents(s) as part of the treatment team.

Every relationship deserves to succeed.
Conflicts in a marriage are rarely about the issues, but instead how couples talk about the issues. In our couples counseling sessions, partners communicate face-to-face, openly and honestly about their issues. Throughout the conversation we will identify and prevent flashpoints that create conflict escalation. We will give feedback and provide direction toward the most effective way of communicating in a given situation. Our feedback encourages respectful and mutually compassionate interactions, and helps dispel miscommunications that cause marital tensions. Small steps soon become major strides as couples progress from confrontation and impasse toward an understanding of their differences. The underlying goal of our sessions is to: • Increase the pleasure of spending time with your partner • Heighten or reestablish emotional intimacy • Help rediscover happiness in your relationship Over the years, Relationship Resources has helped hundreds of married and unmarried couples undo rigid and negative patterns of behavior and transform their relationships to newfound levels of happiness and enjoyment.

Individual and Couples Therapy
The amount of training I have is what differentiates me from other psychologists. I believe in meeting someone where they are at and do so by drawing from a wide range of types of interventions. I treat clients from young children and adolescents to adults and couples. Parenting, stress management, relationship issues, ADHD, anxiety and depression are my specialty areas. Individual Therapy Through developing a warm and trusting relationship, we will utilize your strengths to help you learn more effective ways to cope with life’s struggles, feel more in control of yourself and your life, and improve your connections with others to get your needs met. We will begin to understand and heal your pain in a way that is tolerable in order to change underlying patterns of behavior. You will learn concrete strategies to manage feelings so that you do not become overwhelmed. Often people come in due to an inner critic that is costing them their joy. If this describes a big part of your inner struggles, you will learn how to stop your internal judge and fear of judgment from others from running and ruining your life. Frequent areas addressed in individual therapy: Relationship Issues Considering or Adjusting To Separation/ Divorce Stress Reduction Depression or Loss Issues Self Esteem Issues Anxiety and Sleep Problems Addiction Trauma Anger Management Issues Career issues and changes LGBT issues Finding the right couples therapist is key given you are ready to work on one of the most central relationships in your life. Some conversations are easier to have with help, especially if you want them to go differently or they are on sensitive topics. My focus is on creating a safe space so you can learn new strategies to work through problems together effectively, learn how to be less reactive, and gain perspective on your relationship. Whether you are choosing to find a way back to each other if there has been a rupture in the trust, save your marriage or find a way to separate amicably, handle a divorce, or just need help finding your way through a transition or parenting issues, I can help! If your relationship has become more of a business relationship than an intimate one, you will learn how to increase your passion for each other again. I have been extensively trained by John Gottman, as well as by Toni Herbine Blank, and work with both heterosexual and homosexual couples. I feel privileged to see the tremendous benefits couples enjoy when they are committed to making changes. Frequent areas couples seek help for include: Communication Increased Connection Appreciation and Support Infidelity Parenting Issues Financial Stress Anger Management Sexual Intimacy Assistance with Life Transitions (premarita
Kristen Crowley, MA, Expressive Arts Therapist
Mental Health Counselor / Therapist
Newton, MA 02459
My approach to counseling is collaborative in that I enter into a partnership with my clients rather than maintaining the distanced stance of an expert. My view is that each person contains within them all of the resources necessary for healing and transformation and that my role in the relationship is to help them to see and actualize these strengths. The expressive arts are an incredibly useful aid in this process of self-understanding and the techniques I have been developing can also serve as tools of coping and adaptation as well. My training enables me to integrate the arts into traditional counseling practices in a way that supports and deepens the healing process. I have worked with clients struggling to overcome a wide range of issues in their lives including depression, anxiety, domestic violence, trauma, grief and loss as well as more the more general challenge of life transitions. I have been continuously amazed at the resilience of the human spirit and the power of the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for navigating the waters of the unknown. These difficulties can be our greatest teachers if we consider ourselves worthy of happiness and I am committed to using my own strengths of compassion and a deep understanding of human nature to help people find their way along this path.

Individual, Couples and Group Psychotherapy
in Cambridge, MA
I am a licensed clinical psychologist, who works collaboratively with clients to help them improve relationships and take better care of themselves emotionally. Adult children of aging parents, ACOA's, spouses of substance abusers and professional caregivers (including therapists) value my warm, collaborative style and respect for each individual's unique ways of adapting. Through my books, lectures and teaching, I have trained and supervised 100s of clinicians in group psychotherapy, as well as individual and couples therapy. I teach what I love about my work -- helping clients to feel more empowered in relationships, to improve self-esteem, and to deal with family-of-origin issues, communication problems, life transitions, anxiety, depression, and self-defeating behaviors (including addictions). As founder and former Director of the Substance Abuse Outpatient Clinic at McLean Hospital, I have helped family members to cope with the pain of chaotic and unpredictable lives, find more effective ways of intervening to help their loved ones, and improve the quality of their own lives. I have a special interest in helping clients deal with the complicated feelings and emotional upheaval often associated with major transitions in their own lives and those of family members (marriage, divorce,empty-nest, retirement and bereavement). This work may be done in individual therapy, couples therapy or group therapy.

Individual, Couples & Group Therapy
I understand the importance of developing resilience-to-change in order to effectively cope with major life transitions; loss and endings (divorce, retirement, serious medical illness) as well as beginnings (new relationships, marriage, birth of a child, starting a career). Without such resilience, life can feel overwhelming, self esteem becomes precarious, and mood can dip dramatically. As a licensed clinical psychologist, with more than 30 years experience, my clients value my warm, collaborative approach to relationship issues, executive stress, inter-generational conflicts, mid-life issues, and self-defeating behaviors that keep people stuck. Previous experience as an officer and director of a publicly traded company, as well as in the practice of business law, have uniquely equipped me to help entrepreneurs and executives with a variety of interpersonal business-related issues. I understand legal and business issues in a way that facilitates working with those having difficulties with employers, employees, and co-workers. I can also effectively help with difficulties relating to the stress of balancing work with other life issues. I also work with adolescents who face more than the usual growing pains, parents who want to do a better job with their children, and couples (in both traditional and non-traditional relationships), helping them to relate in more emotionally-satisfying ways. As Co-Director for 10 years, of the Center for Coping with Chronic Illness, I have helped patients and their families, as well as professional caregivers, deal with the impact of the ongoing medical concerns. I work with clients in individual, couples or group psychotherapy or a combination of these, depending on the goals of treatment. In general the clients I see in psychotherapy include homemakers, college students, stressed executives, academics, and other high functioning professionals. Many of my clients find my background in law and business to be a good fit for understanding their issues and conflicts. The treatment issues that I specialize in and and the diverse populations that I work with are listed below. My services may be covered by your insurance plan. Even if I am not listed on your panel of providers, some coverage may be available to you if you have out-of-network benefits. Offering combination of psychotherapy, private yoga,
and trauma-informed yoga sessions
We are all presented with challenges, stressors, and anxieties on a daily basis. Most of us have become conditioned to respond, both behaviorally and emotionally, in certain ways due to past experiences or environments. Some have even endured significant past trauma that may still be affecting their present lives.

Talk therapy is a useful tool for many and it often can help clients reach new levels of insight into their lives and relationships with others. However for some, alternatives are needed. Each client is unique and my aim is to create an individually tailored approach to treatment. Many people may not be able, or simply may not want to access feelings/cognitions right away, and it can be helpful to start in the body. Treatment is often most effective when the body is part of the healing process. In my practice, I hope to teach clients the “language of their bodies.” Emotions and trauma are often stored or trapped in the body. Yoga and other mindfulness techniques can be used to help clients reconnect with their bodies, giving them an opportunity to have a present moment experience both physically and emotionally. As a psychotherapist and yoga practitioner I will give my clients tools to re-inhabit their bodies in a new way. Sessions will be client centered and can start with talking and lead into movement; start with movement and lead into talking; integrate movement and talking together – or just focus on movement alone. I hope to be able to provide an experience that is most useful for the client – which can change on any given day, or even within the session itself.
