Ny Counseling Services
After a successful career as a banker/consultant, I became a Buddhist and started to understand life in all its dimensions, and our struggles. I decided to dedicate the rest of my life to help people finding joy and fulfillment. I have become fascinated and passionate about neuroscience and how it really informs our behavior, our emotional turmoils, our sense of self and identity, our conflicts with others. It's been really rewarding to find tools and to develop skills that transform the functioning of our brain to leave behind the struggle and open doors to peace and satisfaction.
No more "coping" with all that makes us feel terrible! Healing is the option and with technology and the understanding of the nervous system, I apply techniques that regulate the nervous system, create new and better connections in the brain, and allow us to develop awareness and control. I also use techniques to reconsolidate the memories that have been lingering as ghosts and that are at the root of all that trigger us. Clients end up with a different perception, a more positive narrative, and a sense of agency that makes life easier.

Bio
Antonieta Contreras is a Gestalt-trained psychotherapist with a Masters in Social Work from the New York University. She holds a specialization in Trauma Studies from the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapies (ICP) and on Human Sexuality from NYU School of Medicine, and has worked for years at agencies in high-risk, low-income communities. She maintains a private practice in Chelsea where she treats adults and couples who present problems with trauma, attachment, relationships, and sexuality. Adds to her practice the contemplative techniques that she acquired through her studies in India and the Tibetan Buddhist traditions. She is currently serving as Secretary of the Board of Directors of Our Home Base, a non-profit organization that empowers foster care kids in transition and helps them heal from the trauma of displacement. She also serves as co-chair of the Trauma Studies at ICP. She teaches, supervises and consults therapists on trauma and EMDR.
