David Mullen, Ph.D., LMFT
Healing the Mind and Spirit
Dr. David E. Mullen
I work with adolescents and adults. My specialties are anxiety and mood disorders, couple therapy, trauma and loss, clinical hypnosis and EMDR and schema therapy.
Typically, I do brief therapy --6-12 sessions. I am seeing a few patients for longer periods of time. I see myself as a coach and facilitator. For me, therapy is a collaborative relationship where therapist and patient go on a shared journey for a limited time. The journey is rewarding yet difficult, hard work but rewarding. There is no magic wand in therapy as in life. My focus is primarily on the present and future. Collaboration, feedback from both therapist and patient, honesty, skill training within a confidential, safe relationship are the keys to effective psychotherapy.
I am comfortable dealing with spiritual issues if they impact a person's difficulties. As a clergyman and psychologist, I recognize that a healthy spirituality can be an important resources in the healing process.
I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation so a seeker of therapy services can get some feel for how I am. Whatever the therapist
s theoretical orientation., the research says that it is the "fit" between therapist and patients that contributes mightily to a positive outcome. At the intake interview, a careful assessment is made and we go over treatment options. An informed patient gets the most out of therapy.

Bio
I am a seasoned psychotherapist in practice for over 25 years. I have had a variety of clinical opportunities as staff psychologist in a mental health center, director of a non-profit counseling center, director of a college counseling center. I enjoy helping people get unstuck and discover and celebrate their strengths. I am a college professor as well as psychotherapist. I like the mix of teaching and clinical work. Both inform what I do.
I am married, have two adult children and three grandchildren. When I am not working, I enjoy learning how to improve my skills as a jazz musician, writing books ,cooking ethnic recipes, U and talking with friends. An invited lecturer I have led workshops nationally and spoken on positive psychology on cruise ships.
I am interested in the interface of psychotherapy and spirituality and realize that I am a wounded healer working to help relieve emotional suffering. A spiritual person, I see psychotherapy as a sacred calling and not simply as a job or career.
