Caring & Compassionate Care to Create the Life You Deserve
Gregory Wells, PhD - Licensed Psychologist
I believe psychotherapy offers an opportunity for growth and change. My goal is to work collaboratively with my clients to support them in identifying their core values in life and then identifying goals to help them create a life that is rich and meaningful. I work with children, teens and adolescents, families, and couples. I have expertise in treating depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD) and trauma/PTSD. I also provide neuropsychological testing and psychological evaluations to assist in the diagnosis of ADHD, learning disabilities, and academic problems. I have extensive experience collaborating with psychiatrists should there be a need for medication and I can provide referrals should the need arise. I also have experience working with lesbian and gay couples, families with children, and LGBT individuals.
My office is conveniently located in the Castro neighborhood and is close to the Castro Muni station as well as several bus lines. I offer an initial phone consultation at no charge and I have some sliding scale slots available for clients with financial difficulties.
Bio
I earned my Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and I completed my clinical internship through Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center where I provided psychological services in New Orleans Area schools. After receiving my doctorate, I continued work with school aged children and adolescents both in Jefferson Parish and St. Charles Parish. I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at LSU Health Sciences Center in the Department of Psychiatry where I conducted research in New Orleans schools on the effects of Hurricane Katrina and also provided services to students and their families. During my fellowship, I also received specialized training in infant mental health. Since that time, I have worked in private practice in New Orleans and now San Francisco.
I provide a range of psychological assessment and treatment services with a focus on assisting the client, whether individual, family, or couple in achieving their optimal level of functioning. My approach is insight-oriented with the belief that you, the client, are the expert in your life and that my role is to provide guidance and input on your journey. While my orientation is influenced by Buddhist Psychology and Contemplative Psychology, I also employ cognitive-behavioral techniques and use mindfulness in my work, depending on the needs of the client. In addition to my therapy practice, I have extensive experience providing assessment services to school-aged children and adolescents as well as adults, including testing for school admission, testing for ADHD and learning disabilities, and testing related to accommodations on national entrance exams (ACT, SAT, LSAT, etc).
