Mara Wiesen, MA, ET/P
As an educational therapist, I work one-on-one with students of all ages to help them understand and overcome learning disabilities, gain confidence and resiliency, and become independent learners. I see children who struggle with reading, writing, math, study skills, executive function skills, and attention disorders. Many of these children are also highly gifted. My speciality is reading acquisition, helping students who struggle with dyslexia discover the joys of reading, gaining meaning from text and expressing themselves in writing.
Education/Training
I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Yale University and my Masters in Special Education, Educational Therapy, from California State University, Northridge. I have completed post-graduate course work in College Counseling (UCLA) and certificate level course work in Educational Therapy (CSUN). My teacher training work was completed at Pepperdine University.
I have received training from Lindamood-Bell and the Barton Reading & Spelling System and am well acquainted with the Wilson and Orton-Gillingham reading programs. I believe strongly in the importance of research-based intervention methods and stay abreast of new developments through workshops, conferences and independent study.
Bio
A transplanted New Yorker, I have more than 15 years experience working with students as teacher, tutor, and educational therapist. In addition to my private practice, I work with public school elementary students providing assessment and reading intervention. I am familiar with grade level expectations and comfortable working with teachers, school psychologists, and resource teachers. I am well versed in the RTI, SST, and IEP processes.
Memberships
I am a professional member of AET (the Association of Educational Therapists) as well as a member of IDA (International Dyslexia Association). I currently serve on the Board of IDA-Los Angeles.
