Rachel McDavid, LMFT
Rachel McDavid and Associates
I am a New York State licensed marriage and family therapist who works with individuals, couples and groups. I emphasize collaboration and my goal is to support you on your path towards self empowerment, understanding and connection.
While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we can unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
I have had a long history of self exploration and the tools I offer are ones I have used and found to be effective in my own life; tools which you can learn to resolve your own issues.
If you are an individual wanting support around a particular issue or just have a desire to be heard and understood; if you are a couple who needs support in resolving conflict or learning more effective communication skills, consider contacting me.
Please call or email me for an individual, couples or family therapy session today.
Education/Training
I am a New York State Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who received my Master’s degree from Antioch New England Graduate School. I also have a degree in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica,
I am a graduate of the BayNVC 2006 Leadership program and have been an assistant trainer on many residential BayNVC trainings including the BayNVC 2007 Leadership program and the Open Hearted Therapy Retreats in 2008 and 2010 focused on teaching Nonviolent Communication skills to therapists.
Bio
I am a Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in individual, couples and family therapy as well as anger management, and maintains a private practice in New York, NY.
My passion for many years has been learning, teaching and working with people using Nonviolent Communication (NVC) or Compassionate Communication as it is sometimes called, a modality founded by Marshall Rosenberg, which focuses on understanding feelings and needs through connecting with what is most alive in ourselves and others. I lead anger management groups and workshops in which I teach NVC skills to support people in learning how to manage their anger more effectively. In using NVC with my clients, I offer tools, which allow clients to resolve issues on their own.
I have also studied Somatic Experiencing (SE) based on the work of Peter Levine. SE focuses on healing trauma through body awareness. My interest in this topic is both to have greater understanding and tools for working with people who experience trauma and to incorporate a more holistic approach to healing by having more awareness of the body’s process as we experience pain and change.
In my theoretical approach, I incorporate NVC, empathy and somatic work to my training in family systems and solution-focused therapies. With an emphasis on being a collaborator in the client’s process, I work with clients in identifying and changing the stories that are no longer serving them; by supporting them in shifting from areas in which they feel stuck to having a greater sense of freedom and choice.
