Theresa M. Allen Lavenau
Marriage and Family Therapist, Psychoanalyst
My practice caters primarily to adults including struggles with anxiety, depression, and stress (both workplace and personal). A major reason that many people seek treatment with me involves relationship difficulties with or the loss of a spouse, significant other, or family member. With compassion and understanding, I try to help people by focusing on the underlying personal issues that are causing the current difficulties. With greater insight and self awareness, a person is able to unknot the repetitive, often self defeating patterns that are causing such pain for them and feel more of a sense of empowerment in their lives. With this knowledge, together we are able to navigate the desired changes for a more peaceful, robust, and fulfilled life.
Education/Training
California State University, Fullerton. Bachelor of Arts, Psychology, 1980
California State University, Fulleron. Master of Science, Clinical/Community Psychology, 1982
Newport Psychoanalytic Institute, Tustin. Doctor of Psychology, Psychoanalysis, 2009.
Bio
I earned my Masters degree in Clinical/Community Psychology in 1982 from California State University, Fullerson. My hours towards licensure were earned in a community mental health clinic, a psychiatric hospital, and in a private practice. I became licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1985 and have been in private practice in Huntington Beach, CA for the past 25 years. My experience has been with all populations including families, couples, children, and individuals with a variety of conditions and issues. After 6 years of additional training in psychoanalysis, I earned my degree in Psychoanalysis in 2009.
This training has allowed me a very valuable depth of understanding with any modality of therapy whether it be short or long term therapy, as well as an analysis. I bring years of life experience, formal training and clinical practice along with compassion, warmth and sensitivity to my work. Doing psychotherapy brings me a great deal of enjoyment and fulfillment.
