Portrait Health Centers are multi-specialty clinics that employ the most cutting-edge and proven assessment protocols and treatment options available, believing that an Effective Treatment Depends On An Accurate Diagnosis. Individuals should not have to “play doctor” by researching available treatments and then self-selecting which of these treatments has been scientifically validated and would be most appropriate for themselves or their family. At Portrait Health Centers, we provide a comprehensive and multi-specialty assessment to determine the underlying causes of your symptoms and incorporate an appropriate treatment plan.

It is essential for people to feel they are driving their cars and their emotions are not in the driver’s seat. Many times in life people identify themselves as their troublesome emotions. For instance, “I’m bad, I’m weak, or there is something wrong with me.” In reality, emotional pain is separate from the individual. and does not define them. There is often unwarranted feelings of shame and fear regarding experiencing emotional distress. As a therapist, I focus on fostering an individual’s self- identify of who you want to be and differentiating that from thought distortions and behaviors that are barriers to a positive and healthy self- view. Barriers are often related to motivational stages ranging from to denial, thinking, preparing and taking active steps to make life changes.

Susan has extensive training and practice meeting clients at their individual level of motivation to make positive life changes. She has experience helping people during loss, whether it be death or any type of event that is perceived as a loss by an individual. These are unique to each person may include divorce, pet loss, job loss, economic, physical and mental health loss. During periods of loss, people are particularly vulnerable to anger and helplessness. This is often accompanied by a sense of purposelessness and not caring about much. As a therapist, I provide comfort and education to help maintain a sense of normalcy and maintain positive functioning. Therapy can include an opportunity to appreciate the sense of absurdity of life and humor as we journey down the path toward healthy living.

Susan has enjoyed a career in mental health for over 25 years treating individuals with issues ranging from inability to meet basic needs to inability to function due to severe mental illness. During the last 15 years she has focused on mood disorders, loss issues and response to trauma. She also has an interest in working with geriatric patients in the aging process as well as their families.
