My approach to therapy is aimed at achieving tangible progress, working with clients to improve their daily lives. I direct a team of psychologists on the Upper West Side of New York, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to work with clients. CBT is an evidence-based therapy which is action-oriented, short-term, and practical. It is a powerful tool for addressing depression, stress, relationship or identity issues, family problems, fears, or traumatic memories.

Traditional therapy often focuses heavily on self-knowledge and insight. While self-knowledge is helpful, usually it is not enough to produce real, tangible improvement. If this has been your experience, it may be time for a new kind of therapy – one which is oriented toward action. I believe that understanding ourselves is just part of the process, and I will do my best to help you take the steps which come after understanding and lead to growth.

Education
I completed my undergraduate education at Harvard University, followed by 2 years studying depression at the National Institutes of Mental Health. I then completed my doctorate in clinical psychology at St. John's University, and a post-doctoral fellowship at the NYU Child Study Center. During my training I developed specializations in CBT, in trauma, and in anxiety, all of which help me relieve the suffering of the clients I see.
Bio
Dr. Tamar Gordon is a licensed clinical psychologist with extensive training in using CBT to treat a full range of mental health challenges, including anxiety, phobias, depression, OCD, trauma, parenting issues, and insomnia. She received her B.A. from Harvard University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from St. John’s University. She completed a two year post-doctoral fellowship at the NYU Child Study Center, and was then asked to stay on as a CBT supervisor for psychiatry residents.

Dr. Gordon is an adjunct faculty member at both Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, and Columbia University Teacher’s College. She has been a supervisor at a major mental health clinic, an expert consultant on trauma treatment to the United States Veteran’s Association, and is an active member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. She currently spends most of her working time at her private practice in New York City, and most of her personal time raising her two rambunctious sons.
