Therapy for Change in Changing Times
Amy Barton-Cayton, Ph.D., MFT
I have been successfully coaching and counseling people in my private practice since 1990. Typically, my clients are looking to overcome obstacles to their optimum happiness and fulfillment. Many clients are working through unfinished business from their past experience, while many are more recently blocked or stuck in self defeating habits or behaviors. Together, clients and I draw upon a variety of understandings and tools from Western social psychological knowledge and Eastern traditions and philosophies.
Bio
My PhD in Sociology and Masters of Science with Highest Honors leave me prepared to explore both outer and inner obstacles to clients' well-being, happiness, and success. I have lived and worked in California all of my adult life, although travel has introduced me to a variety of cultures. My practice, study, and training in Tibetan Buddhism have contributed to my effective use of mindfulness and other thought training techniques. In addition to working with individuals, I consult and train for various organizations.

I was just out of treatment for codependency, alcoholism and sexual abuse, and Amy was recommended to me for psychotherapy. She believed me about my past. She let me cry, write, and read aloud. She looked at my art work, and believed in it. She got underneath that part of me I wouldn't let out or show anyone. She has that unconditional love.

I was referred to Amy Barton-Cayton in 1988 at age 22 by an employee assistance program counselor who said she knew the perfect person for my therapy, both individual and couples. Looking back, I can see that Amy's help with my personal and professional life set the stage for who I would become throughout my adult years. Her intuition is finely tuned, divinely inspired, and uniquely guided. Because of this, I recovered my authentic self. Her gifts as a therapist are unparalleled. And the gifts of her work with me have stayed with me all these years.
