Along with my twenty five years plus of professional counseling practice, I have a lifetime of challenges that have added to my understanding and compassion of my clients; Joyful experiences such as adoption to life altering traumas as death by suicide and illness of loved ones. All people are different and there is not just one or two or even three "appropriate" ways to deal with life events. Our timelines and our processing needs are individual. Each person is capable of knowing what is right for themselves. Together, respectfully, I help my clients find what is helpful for themselves. Kristen Crowley, MA, Expressive Arts Therapist
Mental Health Counselor / Therapist
Newton, MA 02459
My approach to counseling is collaborative in that I enter into a partnership with my clients rather than maintaining the distanced stance of an expert. My view is that each person contains within them all of the resources necessary for healing and transformation and that my role in the relationship is to help them to see and actualize these strengths. The expressive arts are an incredibly useful aid in this process of self-understanding and the techniques I have been developing can also serve as tools of coping and adaptation as well. My training enables me to integrate the arts into traditional counseling practices in a way that supports and deepens the healing process. I have worked with clients struggling to overcome a wide range of issues in their lives including depression, anxiety, domestic violence, trauma, grief and loss as well as more the more general challenge of life transitions. I have been continuously amazed at the resilience of the human spirit and the power of the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for navigating the waters of the unknown. These difficulties can be our greatest teachers if we consider ourselves worthy of happiness and I am committed to using my own strengths of compassion and a deep understanding of human nature to help people find their way along this path.

Psychotherapy with individuals and couples
I see therapy as a collaborative relationship that involves compassion and challenge. I actively engage with people to help them move through places where they are stuck in their lives. This may involve letting go of past hurts, learning loving kindness, developing skills and agency for living, and being able to play and experience joy. Each therapy is unique: it is devised to facilitate living a full, creative, and meaningful life. I work with individuals and couples. I am very helpful working with people in life transitions: Addressing blind-spots in current work situations that connect to unresolved historical issues; ways in which people are stuck regarding relationships, for example, compromising themselves because of an old and limiting version of their sense of self that is not true and leads them into unsatisfying relationships. I understand the importance of these aspects of people’s lives. I create a safe space for people to learn about themselves and experience themselves authentically.

Clinical Psychologist: Empowering Clients for Life
I’ve been a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Massachusetts since 1988, working with individuals, couples, families, groups, and veterans. My clients say my commitment, engagement and honesty helps them open up and be real with me. I've published articles about stress, pain, geriatric psychology, and attitude change. Our relationship can begin with an initial free phone consultation. Sessions are 45 minutes. During our initial meeting, we set goals, determine approximately how many sessions might be needed, and decide what type of therapy would be most effective. My hobbies include yoga, biking, and creating stone and rock sculptures.

Health mind. Healthy Family.
Treatment is results oriented, which means we work together at the beginning to define the changes that are meaningful to you. In a basic sense, psychotherapy is for thinking about feelings. We are all part of systems, be they family, work or society. The outcome is more freedom to be yourself. With children, treatment approach is family-centered. In the long run, the best therapist for your child is you, the parent. Parent consultation is an integral part of treatment for children and teens. Play space, art therapy and parent observation available. Psychological testing and family meetings are options. In Couples Counseling or Marital Therapy the patient is the relationship. In couples treatment, i thoughtfully guide your interactions to encourage better understanding of each other. This approach reduces the tendency to blame one another for differences, and leads the two of you into your own manner of accepting them. Pet-Assisted Therapy (PAT).

Effective Therapy Creates
Meaningful, Lasting, Joyful Change
Each of us is unique, complex and special. Together we can resolve the inner and outer conflicts that create pain and exhaustion. Our life often brings experiences not of our choosing. Sometimes we’re hurt by others. Sometimes we don’t fit easily into the world we live in. Sometimes what life brings feels too big to accept and manage. I can help you find peaceful and practical ways of doing the best you can with what is, of managing your self and situations with compassion and skill, of finding joy and nourishment in this life at this time. For over 25 years I have been practicing my craft with children, adolescents, middle adults, elders, couples and families. They have come to me with developmental, situational and relational issues. Some had experienced tragedies; some felt overwhelmed by their children or partner. Some were deeply grieving, some filled with anger. Some had illnesses or disabilities they wish they didn’t. Each of them added to my understanding of what it is to be human. Most of us long for happiness, self acceptance, caring relationships and success in our endeavors. Together, drawing from my extensive training and experience and your inner and outer resources, we can create meaningful, lasting and joyful change.

I love what I do, and am told that I'm very good at it. Often, people are helped by me after other approaches failed, filled with pain, fear and sadness; even with histories of trauma. Freud said that a therapist cannot take her clients deeper than she herself has gone. I face my own issues, so as to be clear, compassionate and without judgement.
