Dr. Matthew Paldy
Happier. Healthier. Braver. Bolder.
Therapist in NYC. Big Apple Counseling NYC.
You may be seeking help because of an upsetting event in your life, or you may have struggled with a particular issue for a long time. My approach is relational and collaborative and I'll listen carefully to your thoughts and feelings and work closely with you to find the true reasons and meaning behind your suffering. When these are fully understood you can move through life with more calm, confidence, and clarity.
There are often patterns in how we relate to ourselves, others, and the world around us. These patterns emerge from your mind's "central organizing principles," which are often unconscious. I can help you understand these and feel more in control.
I'm dedicated to helping my patients. Whether you're facing anxiety, depression, trauma, a difficult relationship, or simply a hard time in life, I can help you overcome your struggles. I work with individuals and couples, teens, adults, and the LGBTQ+ community. Therapy isn't always easy, but it can change your life.
How We'll Work Together
I'm not the type of therapist who won't say anything, nor will I give you questionnaires. At first, I may ask a lot of questions so I can get to know you, your life, and your past experiences. I'll welcome your questions as well — together we'll figure things out. It usually takes time a little time for you to feel comfortable. I'm a stranger. What works best is for you to be as open as you can, even if something is hard to talk about. Your session time is YOURS, and you can use it any way you want and talk about anything you want. Sometimes I'll gently guide you. I'll listen carefully to your thoughts and feelings and accept you for who and where you are. I'll understand and know the way forward.
Bio
I grew up on Long Island, New York, earned a BS from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, a Master's from Stony Brook University, and a PhD from the University of Rhode Island. Earlier in my career I was involved in industrial and organizational psychology (I/O Psych)and consulted for many organizations including Chase, American Express, IBM, CIBC Capital Markets, UBS, The College Board, Kaplan TestPrep, and the NYC Department of Education. I developed the Critical Thinking Program for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York during the 2008 Financial Crisis to help employees think more effectively and make better decisions. I ultimately found that working with individuals was more interesting and satisfying and I transitioned into clinical work.
