Counseling and Therapy
Thank you for considering me as a resource at this time in your life. I specialize in individual counseling, couples counseling, teen counseling, and marriage counseling. You may have found yourself at this site because you are looking for ways to improve your relationship or marriage, or you may be looking for ways to reconnect, or you might be considering making a change in your life. If anger, depression, or anxiety is impacting your life, you will gain insight and learn new and more productive ways to cope with and manage your emotions. Counseling can also help you with improving your communication and listening skills, improving your self-esteem, and boosting your self-confidence. During our work together you will discover and nurture your strengths, challenge your beliefs or behaviors that are no longer helpful, gain awareness and empowerment, and resolve experiences that could be causing you pain or are holding you back. In a comfortable, serene, and supportive atmosphere, I offer an individualized approach tailored to meet your specific needs to help you reach your full potential so you may experience the satisfying life you desire. If you are interested in pre-marital, marriage, or couples counseling, I utilize the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, which is based on the research by Dr. John Gottman that began in the 1970's and continues to this day. From this research, a method of therapy was created that emphasizes a "nuts-and-bolts" approach to improving your relationship. This method is designed to help teach specific tools to deepen friendship and intimacy in your relationship. To help you productively manage conflicts, you will be given methods to manage problems and gridlocked (or perpetual) issues. We will work together to help you appreciate your relationship's strengths and to gently navigate through its vulnerabilities.

I worked for the State of Utah as a Family Preservation Therapist (PFP) from June 2004 to July 2008. I was part of a team whose services were court ordered. The primary task was to intervene with families whose children were involved with the juvenile justice system. My task was to engage any person or community partner who could assist the family and adolescent achieve success. The goal was to avoid further involvement in the juvenile justice system. Community partners included, judges, probation officers, extended family members, teachers, school counselors, religious members. Anyone who might be enlisted to help the family and provide support was included as a member of the family team. This was an expensive intervention and the program ran out of money. I then went to work as a caseworker for the Oquirrh Region of the Division of Child and Family Services. There I worked with families who were referred for services by teachers, law enforcement, or concerned citizens. The position lasted until 2008. At that time, I left state employment and took time off because of my own health concerns. I returned to work as a private practitioner. I have been self employed since October 2009.

Provo Utah Based LDS Gospel-Centered Sex Therapy
Issues of Sexual Desire, Arousal, Orgasm, Pain, Satisfaction
Our goal is to improve all facets of couple intimacy by addressing the sensitive needs and issues that can prevent healthy and fulfilling sexual relationships. Most of our clients are conservative LDS individuals or couples that are seeking to find more joy and pleasure in their sex life. We are sensitive to the needs and values of LDS individuals and couples, but are trained to get to the heart of your intimate issues without you feeling as though you must depart from your value system. Covenant Sex Therapy truly specializes in sex therapy. This means that we don't claim to specialize in 10 different therapeutic issues. If you were having severe life threatening problems with your heart, you would go to a Cardiologist, not anyone else. Likewise, if you are having problems in your sex life, you should go to someone specialized in sex therapy. Our training and personal religious affliliation doesn't preclude us from working with clients of different faiths or of no religion. We welcome all that are trying to improve their intimate relationship. This is a paramount part of life and the couple relationship! Find the right solutions to your sexual needs with services from Covenant Sex Therapy based in Provo, UT. We specialize in providing you with a unique approach, LDS gospel-centered systemic sex therapy. Dr. Hughes is highly trained and experienced in working with individuals and couples experiencing issues of sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, pain, satisfaction, and addiction. These are among some of the typical presenting problems: Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder: Deficient sexual fantasies and desire for sexual activity. Female Sexual Arousal Disorder: Inability to attain, or to maintain until completion of the sexual activity, an adequate lubrication-swelling response of sexual excitement. Erectile Disorder: Inability to attain, or to maintain until completion of the sexual activity, an adequate erection. Premature Ejaculation: Ejaculation with minimal sexual stimulation before, on, or shortly after penetration and before the person wishes it. Female Orgasmic Disorder: Delay in, or absence of, orgasm following a normal sexual excitement phase. Male Orgasmic Disorder: Delay in, or absence of, orgasm following a normal sexual excitement phase during sexual activity. Vaginismus (painful intercourse): Involuntary spasm of the musculature of the outer third of the vagina that interferes with sexual intercourse. Satisfaction: Many couples that don't have any of the above sexual dysfunctions still find that they are struggling in their sexual relationship. There are many reasons as to why this is so. Some find that they have dull experience within their entire sexual response cycle. Others have past experiences with another or their spouse that prevents them from being able to enjoy the sexual experience. There are many other reasons why you may find lack of satisfaction in your sexual relationship. Sexual Addiction: Dr. Hughes has an extensive history of working with clients presenting with a sexual addiction. The include but are not limited to pornography, masturbation, and sexual involvement.
