Develop Skills. Build Confidence.
Brain Training and Speech-Language Pathology Services The Brain Trainer works with clients as early as preschool, all the way to seniors. We believe that EVERYONE can have a better brain, regardless of their age. Our clients consist of school aged children who are struggling in the areas of math and reading or those who are excelling in school and want to be pushed to the next level. Clients who have an ADD/ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, Dyslexia or a speech and language diagnosis will also make huge changes while enrolled in one of our customized programs. Our adult clients include those who want to gain a competitive edge at work or stay sharp in retirement. We also serve adults with ADD/ ADHD, dyslexia or following a stroke or brain injury. The process begins with an assessment, administered by our director, Vicki Parker, to determine a client’s strengths and weaknesses. After the assessment, she will design, a customized training program. Clients will then begin to work with their own personal brain trainer, to strengthen weak cognitive skill areas. This is not tutoring —it is training that actually improves the brain from now and for years to come. The customized programs will be filled with activities and tasks that feel like games. You will gain fascinating insights into how the mind functions and how nearly everyone can think more quickly, clearly and creatively. It’s fun and it works. Speech Services Dr. Vicki Parker, the director of The Brain Trainer and a Speech Language Pathologist for the past 30 years, provides Speech Therapy at our facility. A speech language pathologist, evaluates and treats cog-nitive and communication disorders. Here at The Brain Trainer, we work on Cognition—the building blocks of how we think, and Communication Skills—the ability to convey our messages to others. Speech and Language Services greatly benefit those who have difficulty with listening, following directions, coming up with words or putting words together to create sentences or clarity of speech.

Specialization in Orofacial Facial Myology
Santa Fe Therapy Associates delivers speech-language therapy, orofacial myofunctional therapy, and occupational therapy to all ages of clients. We have been serving the nothern New Mexico community for 5 years. Melissa Wilson, M.Ed., COM, CCC/SLP is the owner and director of this practice. Melissa received her certification in the practice of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy in May of this year. She is a member of the International Association of Orofacial Myology. The International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) is a multidisciplinary group of health professionals who benefit from their knowledge and expertise in the areas of speech pathology and the dental fields thus providing specialized therapy in the treatment of orofacial disorders such as habitual open mouth posture, sucking habits (thumb, fingers, pacifiers etc), ineffective chewing and many more. Orofacial myofunctional disorders include one or a combination of the following: 1.abnormal thumb, finger, lip, and tongue sucking habits 2.an inappropriate mouth-open lips-open resting posture problem 3.a forward interdental rest posture of the tongue problem 4.a forward rest position of the tongue against the maxillary incisors problem 5.a lateral, posterior interdental tongue rest posture problem 6.inappropriate thrusting of the tongue in speaking and/or swallowing. What are the Consequences of OMDs? These abnormal habit patterns, functional activities, and postures can open the dental bite beyond the normal rest position. This can result in a disruption of dental development in children and over-eruption of selected teeth in adults. Over time, dental malocclusion, cosmetic problems, and even changes in jaw growth and position are observed in some patients with OMDs. Examples of changes that can result from a chronic open mouth rest posture include an increased vertical height of the face, a retruded chin, a downward and backward growth of the lower face (rather than downward and forward), and flaccid and hypotonic lips (Proffit, 1986).
