I am a qualified and experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapist, using the insights of modern relational psychodynamic psychotherapy and interpersonal neurobiology. I am experienced in working with people with mental health problems, substance dependencies, and life crises. I have worked with people from all walks of life, ethnicities and backgrounds, from senior civil servants to rough sleepers. I also work with work-related issues, including development and leadership; I have experience as a director of a multi-million pound not-for-profit organisation. My practice is based on the concepts of the importance of relationships, and on self-development, recovery, and discovery - finding out what is really going on for you, and what resources you have to work your way through it. Therapy can be challenging, but it is rewarding, and lasts long after the therapy itself ends. It is about helping you find your own vision to light up the rest of your life.

Become Your Potential
Obtain freedom from the insight-out
Steve Cox Counselling The main aim of my practice is to allow people to be and become themselves, to enhance their self-acceptance and awareness and harmonise the relationship between themselves and the world. By engaging in a process where empathy, understanding, valuing and authenticity are experienced at high levels, positive transformation tends to take place. Ordinarily this sort of interactivity is rare in people’s lives, yet when a client and skilled therapist work together with focussed attention, life-changing possibilities emerge. My job is to facilitate your ability to function more fully, to listen and communicate as deeply as possible; paying attention to the whole person and thus promote a relationship whereby you can explore and discover your own growth. Most people come to counselling/psychotherapy for help when there is pain and confusion in their life, to embark on this form of self-help takes courage. The terms ‘counselling and psychotherapy’ are interchangeable – I work with the same high degree of attentive focus and presence, regardless of what name I give to therapy. The process of therapy is not simply a matter of therapist-offered conditions, but one of connection – the client with the therapist creates the therapy interactively and each bring their worlds with them. Professional Experience I have been a counsellor/psychotherapist since 1994 and I have a wide of range of experience that includes: Mental health organisations in Hampshire and the surrounding area: The Priory, Mind, Rethink (the former National Schizophrenia Fellowship), and Parklands Psychiatric Hospital. I was also the Chair of the Southampton Mental Health Forum for six years Further and Higher Education institutions: Southampton City College & the University of Southampton Alcohol and Drugs Agencies: Options and Turning-Point General Practice: private practitioner Working with death and bereavement: St. Michael’s Hospice, North Hampshire Hospice. My roles as a therapeutic practitioner have been; counsellor/psychotherapist, supervisor, consultant, facilitator, trainer, manager and academic. I have also worked as a private practitioner since 1999 counselling, supervising and facilitating therapeutic groups and educational groups, workshops and seminars. As well as my own private practise, I was the therapy team leader of the adult psychiatry department at Southampton Priory. Before this I was the lead psychotherapeutic practitioner and Manager for St. Michael’s Hospice (North Hampshire) Bereavement Services. My Qualifications: Advanced Diploma Counselling, Diploma Psychotherapy, Diploma Counselling Supervision, Diploma Case Work Supervision, Master of Science Degree in Person-Centred Psychotherapy & Wider Applications. Specialisms: Individual counselling, Relational counselling (couples and groups), Bereavement, Drugs and Alcohol, 'Mental health' issues i.e. depression, anxiety, trauma etc... Workshops: Working with Bereavement Death and Dying. Encountering Suicide Exploring counselling within a medicalised mental health society. Four vistas of Therapy Men’s Issues Relational connection Supervision Counsellors and professionals who engage in emotionally challenging relational work have particular developmental requirements. Organisations that run services or teach counselling or helping professions have a particular responsibility in this area. Find out more about the wider applications of development activities by viewing ‘Services Offered’ All the developmental activities listed in ‘services offered’ share a common practice philosophy and are all intended to maximise human potential.

Relationship and Family Therapy
Lets talk together to make your life easier
My work focuses on on relationship issues. I work with individuals, couples and families and all the issues that that includes, anxiety, separation, escalating rows, communication to name but a few. I am a professionally qualified and experienced therapist with a private practise in Twickenham and Staines. I have an Master of Arts degree in Relationship and Family Therapy in addition to my private practise I also work with Relate at several locations. Whether you are looking for help for yourself, your marriage, your children or your whole family, I can offer you confidential, professional help rooted in my experience and training. I can provide you with a safe, confidential space in which to talk about and explore the issues which are troubling you. It may seem hard to find the right counsellor or therapist or even know quite what you are looking for. Please feel free to call or e-mail me with any questions you may have without any obligation at all. I'll be more than pleased to answer any queries you may have so you find what is right for you. What people say about me: "Many thanks I feel like me again. I would not hesitate to come back and see you again if I needed to" (Individual) "I thought we were going to sit in silence for an hour but we both found having you there helped us to talk and more importantly listen to one another and once we started talking we couldn't stop!" (Couple) "For all of us to sit down together and talk was amazing - I cant remember the last time we did. We would so recommend you to our friends." (Family) When we first meet: During our initial consultation we will discuss the reasons you are seeking help and you will have the chance to ask any questions about what happens in therapy and express any worries or concerns you may have. This first meeting also gives us the opportunity to think about working together, we will also go through the frequency and length of time that you will see us for. How can counselling help? Sometime it is hard to manage the feelings that you have and talking things through with a therapist can be truly liberating. Sometimes admitting that you are finding things too much gives you what you need to seek help and start to address what is bothering you. We look together to develop your autonomy and if you are in a relationship at rekindling respect and trust of each other. Other areas of counselling I deal with Young People Counselling. We currently work with Young People aged between 8 and 18 and together we look at the issues they are dealing with from their parents separating to behaviour issues, self harm, school refusers - we work at their pace to improve their lives. The work is confidential and the young people decide if they would like a parent present in the sessions. Post IVF Counselling. There are often relationship issues which arise from an unsuccessful IVF treatment and couples often do not realize until too late the issues that they are facing because of IVF - we look at these issues together and resolve a lot of the unspoken issues of loss and gender differences which the relationship faces because of this. Family counselling . We can help create a safe and neutral space for you to come as a family and talk about what is bothering you - it may be you are a blended family, it maybe one of you just is not getting and your arguments are escalating and causing increasing distress for you all. Whatever it is counselling can give you another way of looking at things and a safe place to discuss what is bothering you. Seeking To Resolve Your Difficulties?
Do you want to make changes to improve your life?
If you're reading this, you are probably feeling stressed or held back by issues, and are keen to improve how you both feel and function in life? My particular expertise is in working with abuse and trauma, helping you to free yourself from the very disturbing effects of these issues. I'm trained to use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) as a standalone psychotherapy and have been accredited by the EMDR Association of UK & Ireland to do so. However, in addition, as an accredited and UKCP registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor I work with many other difficulties which you might bring. I utilise a wide variety of other methods I have at my fingertips, to help you reduce or completely clear your problems. My uniquely personal approach has evolved and been refined over 30 years and is still open to further change. My approach is underpinned by a calming and respectful relational style. I integrate NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & Mindfulness), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing), Systemic Couples Therapy & other more creative processes in my extensive skills set. I can integrate these methods to help you raise your self-awareness and to help you gain positive learning and self-understanding, with an eye to both inner and outer change. Thus my resources for facilitating change are wide and varied. My focus is in creating a truly holistic environment in which to help increase your inner sense of well-being, both in one-to-one work, couple work and also in small, personal groups of up to 4. Well-being means many things to many people, but for me includes a positive sense of self and a sense of satisfaction in life and for some, a sense of safety and wonder at the power of the ever-present, invisible vibrational field around us. My experience includes running Co-Counselling Groups, Counselling Skills Training Groups and other personal growth groups focussing on Parenting, Communication Skills, The Mind-Body Connection & also Developing a Sense of Soul. My focus now is in creating a holistic approach to improve your sense of Well-Being. Of relevance too is the fact that for the last 10 years I have specialised in providing Short-Term Counselling for employees nationwide whilst working for various Employee Assistance Programmes in different capacities. I am thus aware of many of the issues facing individuals in the corporate world and how personal issues may impact upon your working life.

I am an Integrative Psychotherapist which means that I am trained in, and can apply, different theoretical approaches. My psychotherapy practice is mainly based on humanistic and psychodynamic principles, although I also use ideas from the cognitive, behavioural and transpersonal therapies. The therapy I offer involves a 50-minute session at a regular time each week. The length of therapy is agreed on an individual basis, depending on the needs of the client and what they want from the therapy. I work with people age 18 and upwards. I hold an anti-discriminatory ethos and welcome requests for therapy regardless of factors such as ethnic origin, nationality, or sexual orientation. I will send you a short form to fill in with some basic information such as your contact details. What happens in a first session? In our first session of therapy there will be three areas of focus. Firstly, I will begin to explore with you your reasons for seeking therapy at this time. Secondly, I will ask you for some background information about yourself, for example your family, your health, and whether you have had counselling or therapy before. Thirdly, you will have the opportunity to ask me any questions you may have about the therapy and to express any hopes or fears about what the therapy will be like. The first session will be charged at my usual rate of £40, or £35 if you are eligible for a concessionary rate. Director Brighton Therapy Centre
Howard Edmunds works at Brighton Therapy Centre, located in central Brighton, 5 minutes walk from the rail station. Howard offers individual, couple and group psychotherapy. Individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy can help to understand the underlying causes behind emotional difficulties. Counselling is often shorter in length and addresses specific life issues or changes. Couple Therapy is used to enable better communication between couples and to enable them to work on their issues between sessions, such that it usually takes place fortnightly or monthly. Group Psychotherapy has been shown to be as effective as individual psychotherapy. It is especially helpful for those lacking social confidence, who have not been able to form satisfying relationships or want to be more comfortable when relating in groups.

Garden Studio, Former Lawyer, Business Consultant
Therapy takes courage and I understand how difficult it can be to pick up the phone or email, to take that first step. I help people by working in a humanistic, relational way. The important thing is the affinity that can be developed. Together, we work to see what may be possible, what the options are when talking about whatever is causing you distress. I deal with all kinds of concern, including relationship issues, offering couples counselling for affairs, a sense of betrayal, divorce, separation, sexual or emotional abuse. Other concerns that clients bring include depression, stress, alcoholism, bereavement, obsessive behaviours, feelings of aloneness, inability to connect, workplace concerns, redundancy, or a feeling of being stuck or blocked and thus wanting to see how that might be addressed. My garden studio offers clients the chance to talk in a peaceful setting. I am a former lawyer, journalist and business consultant. Clients say they value talking to someone with experience in other walks of life. Whatever is troubling you, I help you feel at ease so you can explore what you need to talk about in confidence at your own pace. Sessions may be solutions orientated with an agreed number of them, usually about 12, or what you bring may be something that warrants longer term work and will therefore be more open ended.

Clapham Common Counselling
For Adults and Adolescents
I offer face-to-face sessions for individual adults and adolescents, at the Clapham Common Clinic which is found above Boots the chemist on Clapham High Street, Our initial meeting will be an opportunity for us to determine if we will be happy to work with one another. If we do agree to continue, I offer two types of sessions. Firstly, there is the short, fixed term form, where we decide on a certain number of sessions; this is especially useful in circumstance where finances are tight. Secondly I offer open ended therapy, where we do not fix the number of sessions, so allowing ourselves the time and pace best suited to a sensitive understanding and remedy to the situation in which you find yourself. Sessions last 50 minutes. In event of you cancelling I offer opportunity to reschedule within the same working week if possible; in rare instance that I cancel a session and we cannot reschedule there is no charge to you. My Clapham practice is less than 5 minutes walk from Clapham Common tube station (Northern Line). The area is well served by multiple bus routes.
