Janet Harrod Carr specializes in the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with language-learning disorders affecting listening, speaking, reading, writing, and spelling. Additionally, she specializes in the evaluation and treatment of children with speech sound disorders, apraxia, and dysarthria. She has specialized training for trestment of children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders/Asperger's Syndrome. Socio-emotional communication skills are addressed through direct training in individual and group activities, as well as use of social stories to improve the child's understanding of what to do and say. Treatment is designed to improve learning strategies, develop metacognative skills, develop listening comprehension/auditory processing and verbal expression, improve intelligibility of speech, develop reading fluency and reading comprehension skills and improve written expression and spelling. Therapy is conducted in a naturalistic environment to accomplish structured and individualized treatment goals identified during the evaluation and treatment process. Family input and participation is critical to the success of the child and is enhanced through education, training and guided practice. Use of technology (IPads, Touch Screen Computers, Low-Tech Assistive Technology, etc.) is incorporated whenever possible. Since moving from Tulsa to Bartlesville, Ms. Carr added teletherapy services as a method of reaching students who prefer to receive therapy in their home environment after receiving an on-site evaluation. Response to intervention monitoring occurs ongoing for each student who meets the criteria to be seen via teletherapy. Ms. Carr believes that management of sensory/motor processing challenges is a critical underpinning to treatment and works collaboratively with physical and occupational therapists to ensure that the child's motor and sensory needs are addressed/accomodated during the treatment process. She also works collaboratively with psychologists, pediatricians and neurodevelopmental professionals to ensure that emotional and physical issues are addressed concurrently to treatment.

My practice consists primarily of independent evaluations and consultation. My experience lies largely in the areas of augmentative alternative communication (AAC), working with individuals with autism, and students with significant language learning disabilities. I have spent almost 40 years working with children and adolescents with autism; in public and private school settings, in day and residential programs. I have a strong background in applied behavior analysis, but also with naturalistic and environmental approaches. I focus on development of language and literacy skills, especially for students who are primarily nonverbal. I am familiar with the whole range of augmentative communication systems, and teaching strategies for developing genuine communication skills. I also worked in a public school district with students in substantially separate language-based classrooms, both team-teaching with special education teachers and transitioning students into general education settings. I perform independent evaluations for families and schools, looking closely at specific areas of strength and weakness in order to make recommendations that will help make student successful in an appropriate academic setting. I perform AAC evaluations for a wide range of individuals with all types of disabilities and needs. I try to best match the individual’s needs to the features available in no-tech, low-tech, and/or high-technology AAC systems. I am familiar with the range of alternate access possibilities, the needs of students with cortical vision impairments, and in training partners as scanners.

Smart Speech Therapy LLC provides personalized speech and language services that are specifically customized for each client and are based on their unique needs. We offer consultation, evaluation and treatment of complex speech and language-based disorders for pediatric clients 0-21 years of age. We specialize in providing comprehensive speech language assessment and intervention services for internationally adopted children with communication delays, feeding and swallowing difficulties, as well as psychiatric and neurological impairments. We offer bilingual speech and language services in Russian to meet the linguistic and cultural needs of children whose parents would like them to receive services in their native language. We also offer comprehensive assessment and intervention of children identified or presenting with features of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD). Evidence based practice and latest research based assessments are used to evaluate each child and determine his/her strengths and weaknesses. Brain Training and Speech-Language Pathology Services The Brain Trainer works with clients as early as preschool, all the way to seniors. Melissa received her certification in the practice of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy in May of this year. She is a member of the International Association of Orofacial Myology. The International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) is a multidisciplinary group of health professionals who benefit from their knowledge and expertise in the areas of speech pathology and the dental fields thus providing specialized therapy in the treatment of orofacial disorders such as habitual open mouth posture, sucking habits (thumb, fingers, pacifiers etc), ineffective chewing and many more. Orofacial myofunctional disorders include one or a combination of the following: 1.abnormal thumb, finger, lip, and tongue sucking habits 2.an inappropriate mouth-open lips-open resting posture problem 3.a forward interdental rest posture of the tongue problem 4.a forward rest position of the tongue against the maxillary incisors problem 5.a lateral, posterior interdental tongue rest posture problem 6.inappropriate thrusting of the tongue in speaking and/or swallowing. What are the Consequences of OMDs? These abnormal habit patterns, functional activities, and postures can open the dental bite beyond the normal rest position. This can result in a disruption of dental development in children and over-eruption of selected teeth in adults. Over time, dental malocclusion, cosmetic problems, and even changes in jaw growth and position are observed in some patients with OMDs. Examples of changes that can result from a chronic open mouth rest posture include an increased vertical height of the face, a retruded chin, a downward and backward growth of the lower face (rather than downward and forward), and flaccid and hypotonic lips (Proffit, 1986).

The Coleman Therapy Center (CTC) is mainly a pediatric therapy center that provides speech and language diagnostics and therapy. CTC therapists provide evaluations and therapy for children with varying disabilities and disorders ranging from apraxia and autism to syndromes and traumatic brain injuries. CTC therapists are trained in a variety of treatment approaches like PROMPT (Hayden), The Listening Program (ABT), and Floortime (Greenspan). CTC is also happy to offer the Lindamood Bell, Wilson and Orton-Gillingham intensive reading programs for struggling readers. Our Therapy Programs include individual therapy, group therapy, reading therapy, social skills groups, fabulous Fridays, NVTRP and CTC camp, hippotherapy and The Listening Program. Individual Therapy: Most of our therapy program consists of either a 30 or 60 minute individual therapy session which follows an individualized treatment plan based on the strengths and needs of your child. Treatment plans are updated frequently to ensure that we are always targeting the appropriate objectives for your child. Group Therapy: Group therapy may be available but depends on family interest. We always ensure that all group members complement each other in order to have a functional, successful group outcome. Please call to see if any groups are running currently. Group therapy may be available in our Reading Programs and/or therapy treatment programs. Reading Therapy: CTC is proud to offer the Lindamood Bell LiPs, Seeing Stars and Visualizing/Verbalizing programs. These programs are typically offered in two, three and four hour sessions. Intensive reading therapy offered during school holidays and summer vacations. Social Skills Groups: This group therapy is for children 4-12 years old. The Speech Pathologists at The Coleman Therapy Center will provide social skills instruction using the Michelle Garcia Winner curriculum target adapting to others, how to engage and play with peers, perspective-taking, social language and interaction. Fabulous Fridays for Children with Down Syndrome: During this group therapy summer program the therapist provides three hours of intense instruction for children 4-10 years old with Down Syndrome. NVTRP and CTC Camp: During the summer, the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program (NVTRP) and The Coleman Therapy Center (CTC) pair up for an unforgettable camp experience, which includes therapeutic horseback riding, group speech therapy, and gross/motor sensory play. Hippotherapy: In this therapy program, the speech-language pathologist uses horseback riding movement to facilitate the physiologic systems that support speech and language. When combined with other standard speech-language intervention strategies, the speech-language pathologist is able generate effective remediation of communication disorders and promote functional communication outcomes.
