Educational Therapy
As an educational therapist, I work one-on-one with students of all ages to help them understand and overcome learning disabilities, gain confidence and resiliency, and become independent learners. I see children who struggle with reading, writing, math, study skills, executive function skills, and attention disorders. Many of these children are also highly gifted. My speciality is reading acquisition, helping students who struggle with dyslexia discover the joys of reading, gaining meaning from text and expressing themselves in writing.

Specialized academic support for your child's unique needs
Does your child become easily frustrated with homework? Does your child struggle to keep up with their peers academically? Does your child exhibit anxiety and a lack of self-esteem when it comes to learning? If so, Educational Therapy may be the solution for you. Educational Therapy is individualized academic support that enables students to develop skills and strategies to be successful learners in a classroom environment. An Educational Therapist helps students set attainable learning goals, provides targeted one-on-one support, conducts formal and informal skills assessments, and utilizes innovative teaching techniques to meet the needs of each particular student. Oftentimes when a student is struggling to succeed in school there is an underlying reason. Educational Therapy aims to identify the cause and helps students overcome skill deficits. The ultimate goal is for students to develop strategies to help them not only enjoy learning, but also perform at their highest academic potential.

Strategies for the Learning Disabled
Multi-Dimentional Appoach for Success
I am a founding member of the Association of Educational Therapy, and have been practicing for 30 years. My preference is working with PK-6th graders, as this educational foundation is the key to later success. The younger the student, the less academic workload needs to be introduced. We can methodically move from phonics to reading two, three and four-letter words, each following simple rules using syllables. This lays the foundation for phonics, reading, spelling, and all the components of Language Arts. I have written the booklets for success starting with sound-symbol association, two-syllable, three-syllable and four-syllable words, sentences and short stories. Simultaneously, children are taught fluency skills, and remediation techniques for overcoming reading errors. My mission is to reward children with becoming independent learners, using a "self-correction" method of attending to their academic tasks. I work with the parents and teachers when appropriate to have their reinforcement to understand the importance of working as a team.

Reading Problems Grades 1-8; Math Grades 2 Through Pre-Alg.
No Contracts; Semi-Retired; Reduced and Flexible Rates
For 35 years, I was the owner and director of the One-to-One Reading Center on Woodley and Devonshire in Granada Hills, where we worked with children and adults having reading problems and other educational difficulties, including ADHD, Dyslexia, and Math. All our work was always on a one-to-one basis, and we never required contracts. Now I am working part-time out of my residence, where I have added a room addition specifically for tutoring and educational therapy. Because I have almost no overhead, I am able to work at rates 50% or more below the going ET rate. I no longer charge for cancellations, and will work mornings during non-school days and summer, as well as after school weekdays, till 8:30p.m. I am a lifetime credentialed Elementary Teacher in addition to my advanced degrees and my Board Certification with AET. My specialty has always been reading remediation for LD and Dyslexic persons, especially children age 6 to about 12, though all ages will be considered if their problems are appropriate to my expertise. For significant problems, it is recommended that the student attends at least twice a week. Sessions are usually an hour, but 45 minute sessions can be taken for additionally reduced rates.
Elaine Offstein, Educational Therapist, MA, BCET
Educational Therapist
Glendora, CA 91740
Offstein Educational Therapy provides an individualized, instructional program designed to discover the pathology of learning that is interfering with the client’s successful achievement. Educational therapy addresses academic remediation in the areas of reading comprehension, phonics, and written language, as well as low academic self-esteem, and study skills. Offstein Educational Therapy specializes in providing Electro-Encephalogram (EEG) Neurofeedback. The electrical activity of the brain is known as brain wave frequencies. Our brains produce a mixture of brain waves frequencies at any given time. An electroencephalogram, or EEG, is a recording of brain wave activity. Brain waves are measured and recorded using an instrument known as an EEG machine. If the rhythmic electrical impulses, or brain waves, produced by the brain become abnormal or out of balance, imbalances are created in the body. Real-time, all-digital EEG Neurofeedback training uses a specialized computer program that produces audio and visual signals in conjunction with brain wave activity. Non-invasive, painless sensors, called electrodes, are placed on the surface of the head. These sensors enable the brain wave patterns to be amplified and displayed on the computer screen. By displaying abnormal rhythmic patterns, the brain can be trained to replace them with normal patterns. Real-time, all-digital EEG Neurofeedback is both safe and effective. It helps to improve functions such as: • Concentration & focus • Short-term memory • Verbal expression • Speech motor skills • Gross motor skills • Sleep • Energy level • Emotional balance Examples of conditions that can result in abnormal brain wave rhythms are: • Open and/or closed head trauma/injury • Stroke • Coma • Autism Spectrum Disorders • Asperger’s Syndrome • Epilepsy • Migraine & cluster headaches • ADD/HD • Dyslexia • Learning disabilities • Clinical depression • Anoxia • Post viral damage • Cerebral Palsy • Traumatic brain injury • Concussion • Near-drowning • Depression • Migraine headaches • Learning difficulties • Down’s Syndrome • Cerebral Palsy • Dystonia • Anxiety and/or Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome • Whiplash EEG Neurofeedback is one of the most compelling examples of the body’s ability to self-regulate and bring itself into balance. Current brain research has shown that EEG Neurofeedback can be an effective auxiliary treatment for the above-mentioned conditions. Real-time, all-digital EEG Neurofeedback can help manage and improve the above conditions. Once the brain’s normal rhythmic patterns have been restored, EEG Neurofeedback is no longer necessary. The results of the training are permanent, unless another trauma or injury occurs.
Shawn Simon, MA, BCET
Educational Therapist
Newbury Park, CA 91320
As a board certified educational therapist, I work with children and adolescents who struggle in school due to learning differences. I specialize in ADHD and executive functioning challenges as well as reading decoding and fluency, reading comprehension, expressive writing, and study skills and test taking anxiety. Through my work with children, I am able to authentically build self-esteem, which ultimately leads to greater success in school. In addition to my private practice, I supervise Learning Coaches who tutor students in my after school homework program, called The Learning Spot. All of my coaches are either credentialed teachers or they are in school working toward degrees in teaching or speech and language. Furthermore, I have recently hired educational therapy interns to supervise. Both of my interns are in school working toward their Master's Degrees in Educational Therapy. They are available to remediate skills in reading, writing, and math. They also work on building study skills, test taking skills, and they help to improve skills in executive functioning, such as organization, planning, and time-management.
