Practical Solutions that Work
With over 16 years of clinical experience, I specialize in helping men work through the challenges that often feel hardest to talk about—relationship struggles, anxiety, depression, work stress, and substance use. My approach is practical, supportive, and tailored to the unique pressures men face in today’s world. For 13 years, I served as a clinician with the Department of the Army and the Department of Veterans Affairs, where I worked extensively with service members, veterans, and their families on issues of resilience, trauma, and transition. I know from both professional and personal experience how difficult it can be for men to reach out for help. That’s why I place the highest priority on building a safe, trusting, and judgment-free space where you can be honest, work through struggles, and find real solutions. Whether you’re dealing with painful events, ongoing stress, or long-standing emotional difficulties, I’m here to help you move forward with clarity and strength.

Cottonwood Counseling, LLC
Sally Marelius, LPC, NCC
I worked for the State of Utah as a Family Preservation Therapist (PFP) from June 2004 to July 2008. I was part of a team whose services were court ordered. The primary task was to intervene with families whose children were involved with the juvenile justice system. My task was to engage any person or community partner who could assist the family and adolescent achieve success. The goal was to avoid further involvement in the juvenile justice system. Community partners included, judges, probation officers, extended family members, teachers, school counselors, religious members. Anyone who might be enlisted to help the family and provide support was included as a member of the family team. This was an expensive intervention and the program ran out of money. I then went to work as a caseworker for the Oquirrh Region of the Division of Child and Family Services. There I worked with families who were referred for services by teachers, law enforcement, or concerned citizens. The position lasted until 2008. At that time, I left state employment and took time off because of my own health concerns. I returned to work as a private practitioner. I have been self employed since October 2009.

Counseling and Therapy
Thank you for considering me as a resource at this time in your life. I specialize in individual counseling, couples counseling, teen counseling, and marriage counseling. You may have found yourself at this site because you are looking for ways to improve your relationship or marriage, or you may be looking for ways to reconnect, or you might be considering making a change in your life. If anger, depression, or anxiety is impacting your life, you will gain insight and learn new and more productive ways to cope with and manage your emotions. Counseling can also help you with improving your communication and listening skills, improving your self-esteem, and boosting your self-confidence. During our work together you will discover and nurture your strengths, challenge your beliefs or behaviors that are no longer helpful, gain awareness and empowerment, and resolve experiences that could be causing you pain or are holding you back. In a comfortable, serene, and supportive atmosphere, I offer an individualized approach tailored to meet your specific needs to help you reach your full potential so you may experience the satisfying life you desire. If you are interested in pre-marital, marriage, or couples counseling, I utilize the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, which is based on the research by Dr. John Gottman that began in the 1970's and continues to this day. From this research, a method of therapy was created that emphasizes a "nuts-and-bolts" approach to improving your relationship. This method is designed to help teach specific tools to deepen friendship and intimacy in your relationship. To help you productively manage conflicts, you will be given methods to manage problems and gridlocked (or perpetual) issues. We will work together to help you appreciate your relationship's strengths and to gently navigate through its vulnerabilities.

Understanding, challenge, and growth
Therapy is tough, and so are you. If you’re looking for hope, understanding, challenge and growth, you’ve come to the right place. We focus on making connections, confronting hard things, and learning how to rebuild and find relief. We respect the financial commitment therapy requires and we won’t waste your time. Success doesn’t always look like sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes, it looks like living another day with less dread and more ease. We’re here to “sit with you in the dark, when you can’t see the bright side.” - Amara Honec From our psychotherapy sessions, you can expect 3 things: understanding, challenge, and growth. My goal is to make sure I understand your story the way you experience it. You will be challenged at times, and it might be uncomfortable. You might even find yourself stewing over the audacity I must have to make a connection that disrupts your normal way of thinking or being - with respect, of course. You can also expect to learn a skill and gain some insight.
