Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
It takes courage to seek a professional therapist and entrust that person with your thoughts, feelings, and goals. It takes time to find the right therapist who has the specific knowledge, skills, and experience to assist with your unique and individual requests. Therapy may provoke many questions that you have been struggling with but may have put aside due to the daily tasks of a hectic daily routine. Life brings a tremendous amount of challenges, surprises, and questions our way. I would consider it an honor to provide you with a professional, safe, confidential environment to examine your challenges, values, belief systems, goals, and questions. Together we will set an appropriate pathway to examining answers, uncovering strengths, positive skills and healing. Therapy can help you when you are wondering what a loving relationship should look and feel like to you: What being a good parent means to you; what does giving of yourself to all of the important people in your life mean; how should you do that; what would it look like; how do you manage your children and household when your active duty spouse is forward deployed; how do you help your children cope with separation anxiety of yet another deployment; how do you accomplish your mission if you are wondering if your family is prepared for your absence and will be safe at home; how do you grieve loss; how do you transition from high school to college and begin investing your time in a degree, vocation, or profession that is right for you. As a licensed therapist I can help you walk through these important questions and life circumstances. There are therapeutic methods that can be used to sit with you and open the pathways to thought, exploration, answers, and healing.

First Avenue Counseling Center
Mental Health Counselor / Therapist
San Diego, CA 92101
First Avenue Counseling Centre (FACC) is a non-profit agency dedicated to providing low-fee counseling services to San Diego families. We began in 2002, shortly after another local counseling agency had closed its doors, leaving a significant need for these services in the community we love. In addition to offering individual, couple, and family counseling, we also offer groups focusing on relationship counseling and anger management. Low-Cost Individual Counseling Problems in work, relationships and family happen to all of us. The counselors at First Avenue Counseling Centre are trained to help.Perhaps you're struggling with decisions about a relationship. Maybe work is not as satisfying to you as you would like it to be. You may be struggling with the loss of a loved one. Whatever you're going through, having a therapist to guide you through it can make the journey a bit easier to handle. While a therapist can not solve your problems for you, he or she can be a caring guide through dark times. Couples Counseling (Relationship Counseling) Romantic relationships are never easy. Our partners see us at our strongest, as well as at our most vulnerable. One of life's greatest challenges can be keeping a relationship together through rough waters. The counselors at First Avenue Counseling Centre are trained to help.Problems of trust, power, intimacy, raising children--these are all common in relationships, and counseling can help resolve them. Coming to counseling by itself is a powerful statement. It is a testament to how much you want your relationship to work, and how willing you are to do what it takes to make it happen. An openness to discussing your problems and a commitment to taking action are great first steps to successful couple therapy. When working with couples, we frequently use co-therapy as a means to balance the session. For example, when seeing a heterosexual couple, we usually will have one male and one female therapist present. This way we ensure everyone will be fully understood, even in experiences truly unique to their gender.

True power is in the courage to be who you are
I work with individuals (adults/children/youth), couples and families based on their unique needs, qualities and strengths. I have an eclectic approach so that treatment can be effectively tailored to the specific problem, person and life situation. My practice focuses on treating the entire person from a mind-body-spirit-soul perspective. In addition to using the typical talk therapy techniques, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and other modern psychological treatment methods, I believe it is important not to forget about one's soul or the HIgher Self. Since nowadays we are far removed from our ability to communicate with and understand this true and guiding aspect of ourselves that is closest to the divine origin, I hope to help a person to begin developing a bridge to this part of themselves. Through this process and the aligning oneself with the eternal truths and one's own path, many fears, anxieties and depression may transform or are perceived differently. This type of work is not based on the latest research findings or self-help books, but on thousands of years of wisdom of humanity's experiences about this world that we still possess in the unconscious mind. I use variety of different ways to connect with the unconscious such as Jungian sandplay, art, music, dream analysis, symbolic interpretation, fairy tales and myths, guided imagery and meditation. I offer my services and help to both children and adults, as well as families and couples. The issues that I am most familiar with and specialize are: Anxiety Depression Grief and loss PTSD Addictions Emotional and behavioral problems in children Life transitions Existential and spiritual issues I am an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) trained therapist and also educated in Jungian Sandplay.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
Specialized Relationship Counseling | Couples Therapy | Marriage Counseling in San Diego, CA In your relationship, do you experience emotions going from zero to sixty in a split second? Are you stuck in a rut, returning to the same conflict over and over with the same results every time? Do you feel unsuccessful in your relationship or marriage? You are not alone. Many couples have trouble with communication and conflict resolution. Don’t make the mistake of letting these issues go unresolved. Take a proactive approach to get your relationship or marriage back on track. Relationship Counseling can help. If you are at a place where you are searching for ways to repair, rebuild or preserve your relationship– contact me. Think of me as your expert counseling guide. As a Licensed Couples Therapist, I provide a comfortable, nonjudgmental and safe environment to discuss your goals and the obstacles getting in the way of connection in your relationship. During Relationship Counseling, I will help you discover the tips and tools you need to experience a healthy and truly rewarding relationship. What I have learned from experience and ongoing education is that underlying most of the conflicts that couples experience is a missed opportunity to feel listened-to and accepted. Couples get into trouble when they don’t have a full sense of safety and security with each other. Without emotional safety and security (ex: “When I need you, you’ll be there.”; “You’re responsive to my needs.”) it’s almost impossible to maintain a sense of closeness, belonging and intimacy. That is why my focus as a therapist is on your primary needs – feeling close, secure and understood. Using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), we will identify rigid patterns preventing true closeness in your relationship. We’ll explore those patterns to discover what is really going on inside, individually and in the relationship. Next, I’ll guide you to more effective communication. Through this process, you’ll develop the closeness you want and make your relationship that ‘safe haven’ you deserve and need. Through our efforts, you’ll become the expert of yourself and your relationships. My practice is open to people of diverse backgrounds & ages. Relationship Counseling Services include: Couples Therapy, Marriage Counseling, Premarital Counseling and Individual Therapy sessions available in the greater San Diego County area. Chappell Therapy has sessions available days & evenings, Mon- Fri; mornings and afternoons, Sat-Sun. Click here to Schedule a Consultation. Learn more about Emotionally Focused Therapy.

Improve Your Relationship
Are you sick and tired of having the same fight over and over? Are you wondering if the passion and fun can come back into your relationship or marriage? Worried that the conflict and negativity are unsolvable? Do you question if it’s possible to recover from an affair or other betrayal? Are you curious about how compatible you and your dating partner are and if you’re ready to move in, get engaged, or plan to be married? Have financial challenges threatened the safety and optimism in your relationship? Trish Stanley, PsyD, MFT is a dedicated relationship therapist who brings warmth, acceptance, and a treasure trove of skills to the process of helping her clients tackle and resolve these kinds of challenges. Her expertise is based on the groundbreaking work of our mentor, Dr. John Gottman. His forty years of research with over four thousand couples led to the development of powerful tools that reflect clinical evidence of what actually works in making relationships better and happier. The Gottman Method Couples Therapy is based on Dr. John Gottman’s research that began in the 1970’s and continues to this day. The research has focused on what makes relationships succeed or fail. From his research of four decades with more than 4,000 couple’s Dr. Gottman has created a method of therapy that helps couples break through barriers to achieve greater intimacy, understanding and connectedness in their relationship. Gottman Method Couples Therapy is a structured, goal-oriented, scientifically-based therapy. This method is designed to help teach specific tools to deepen friendship and intimacy, productively manage conflicts, generate greater understanding between partners, and support each other’s hopes for the future. Drs. John and Julie Gottman have demonstrated how couples can achieve greater friendship, conflict resolution, and meaning by paying attention to what they call the Sound Relationship House, or the seven components of a healthy marriage.

Design a Life You Love
Are you living a life you love, or are you stuck in the familiar “one step forward, two steps back” dance? Life can be colorfully painful, beautifully complicated, and completely overwhelming—and none of us were given a how-to guide. We all experience complicated twists and unexpected turns that cause sadness, worry, anger, and destructive patterns with food, drugs, alcohol, and within our closest relationships. Our lives are too short to lose precious time to unhappiness, feeling hopeless, and being stuck in the same vicious cycles. Therapy can give you a personalized roadmap to help you design a life you love. I help children, adults, families, and couples break free from these unhealthy cycles, rewrite their life narratives, and make changes to create a life truly worth living. I have over 10 years of experience working with children and families, and have specialized, evidence-based training in depression, anxiety, trauma, family conflict, and behavioral issues. Choosing a therapist is a bit like shopping for new jeans: you need a fit that may initially feel new and, at times, slightly uncomfortable as we work through the tough stuff, with the confidence that over time, you’ll feel safe, secure and supported. Life is messy. Finding the "right fit” in therapy can help you find meaning in its colorful chaos.

Many children and adults experience trauma. Some traumas are the most obvious such as earthquake, fire, car accidents, and abuse and can be referred to as "Big T" traumas. Others are less so, but may still have a large effect on how someone lives day to day life. These "smaller" traumas include interpersonal conflicts, loss of a pet, moving to a new home or community, or even disciplinary action by a teacher or boss and can be referred to as "Little T" traumas. Adults often view these "Little T" events as something that can easily be resolved with time. Often they can. But some children, and even some adults, do not bounce back quickly and seem to perseverate over the event. Parents or friends can be clueless as to how to deal with this, because they've been able to rationalize that the event happened, is over, and now everything is ok. Some people are emotional beings. When they experience an event that is traumatizing to them, it is hard to see the bigger picture and view anything beyond that particular point in time. The reaction to the trauma will often become the reaction to anything that triggers a memory of the trauma. Triggers can come from a smell, a taste, a sound, a touch, a visual cue, or even a set of seemingly innocuous circumstances. In my practice, I utilize EMDR, play and art therapy techniques, as well as, traditional talk therapy to guide children and adults to resolution. I have worked with children as young as 2 years of age through adulthood. If you or your child have experienced a trauma or seem to be having difficulty "getting over" an experience, call me for a free phone consutation to see if I am the right therapist for you.

Welcome to Lori Underwood Therapy in San Diego! You have access to help TODAY with your most critical relationships! I focus on achieving realistic, lasting results for highly motivated San Diego professionals and their families in two critical areas: work and family relationships. Mine is a solutions-focused therapy practice with a proven track record of training high-performing individuals to guide their most important relationships into balance–quickly and effectively. Work relationships can cause stress, affecting family relationships. Signs of job stress can vary from person to person, depending on the particular situation, how long the individual has been subjected to the stressors, and the intensity of the stress itself. Some symptoms of job stress you may be experiencing include, but are not limited to: •Absenteeism •Anxiety •Depression •Extreme anger and frustration •Family conflict •Insomnia •Loss of mental concentration •Physical illnesses such as heart disease, migraine, headaches, stomach problems, and back problems •Substance abuse Markers indicating your work relationships may be out of balance include: •Feeling burned out •Most everyone you know thinks you’ve got everything together, when inside you feel like you are falling apart •No matter how hard you try you overwhelmingly feel like nothing ever seems to be “good enough” •Others tell you they know you can do it, but deep down you’re left wondering if you can Family relationships that are out of balance can result from and/or be the cause of stress at work. If your stress is affecting–or is a function of–your relationship with your spouse, ask yourself if you are feeling any of the following toward (or from) your spouse: •Contempt •Criticism •Sarcasm •Stonewalling If you are experiencing one or more of the above, now is the time to take action. Each emotion can often represent a marker of a stress fracture in your relationship. The good news is your relationship can be repaired. You have the answers inside you and together we can identify them. Know that there is hope for you and your relationships. I am confident I can help you TODAY.
