Empowering Children in Oregon to Achieve
Developmental and Neurological Goals
Milestone Music Therapy exists to empower children in setting and achieving developmental and neurological goals. All of our staff are passionate about being a musician and using that to help others get the most out of life. The majority of children who we work with have some form of neurological impairment (either from brain injury or developmental disability) or chronic health condition. We also provide early childhood music experiences. A board certified music therapist will assess the strengths and needs of each client and then provide the needed treatment including creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music. Through musical involvement in the therapeutic context, client’s abilities are strengthened and transferred to other areas of their lives. Our music therapists use music interventions designed to facilitate changes that are non-musical in nature. We implement services with individuals and/or groups. Services are provided in individual's homes, group homes, health care facilities, schools, preschools, childcare agencies, and/or our music therapy clinic. Music Therapist
GTA and Southwestern Ontario, ON L4H 3E1
Notes By Amy provides private individualized music therapy sessions that are customized to meet the specific needs of each client. Private in-home sessions begin with a 3-4 session assessment period followed by the therapist’s formal written assessment prepared in discussion and goal setting with the client and/or family. Group music therapy services are also available and generally take place at a facility such as a nursing home or community centre. Guided Imagery and Music Sessions Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) is a therapeutic process using music and a trained facilitator to create an environment to facilitate personal insight that provides answers and guidance for significant life issues. The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (BMGIM) is a “music centered exploration of consciousness which uses specifically sequenced music programs to stimulate and sustain a dynamic unfolding of inner experiences” (AMI, 2000). GIM supporters believe: imagery and music are therapeutic agents; transpersonal and psychodynamic aspects are part of therapeutic process; and expanded awareness results in major therapeutic benefits (Burns & Woolrich, 2008). GIM is based upon humanistic and transpersonal theories that emphasize the attentiveness of the individual and the influence of music on ego development. The classical music programs in the BMGIM provide structure and direction for the experience (Bonny & Pahnke, 1972). Essentially music is the impetus that releases unconscious material such as feelings, images, and memories for use in therapy. Supervision and Mentoring Supervision is an important practice in which all clinicians should be actively involved. The purpose is to assist the student or therapist to learn from his/her experience and progress in their clinical skills, develop confidence and work authentically. Amy provides professional and internship supervision in Southwestern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area, including: Toronto, Mississauga, Woodbridge, and also via distance for professional and unique remote internships and out of country placements. Areas of Clinical Expertise Amy has supervised students, interns and professionals in their work with a wide variety of clients including: Adults with physical disabilities and/or chronic illness, Geriatrics, Stroke, Parkinson’s, Dementia, Cancer & Palliative Care, Children with special needs; Mental Health; Personal Development and Wellness, Trauma, Sexual and Physical Abuse, Stress, Anxiety, and GIM Sessions
