A MIND BODY APPROACH
Pain, Anxiety, Stress, Sleep (PASS) specialities
Everyone runs into the storms of the seas of life. It can be a medical problem, an emotional problem, a loss, very likely a relationship problem or an addiction. The effects can be devastating and at the very least, very unsettling. We all react differently. Very commonly you feel anxious, depressed or simply stressed. You are on overload. The demands being placed on you may seem more than you can handle. There seems to be too much on your plate. The seas of life may have become so rough they seem to be threatening your ability to keep it all together Slow down-cool off-take a deep breath and take stock of what is happening. Together we can work on dealing more effectively with the storm, make repairs as needed and strengthen you to better deal with future storms. The tools we will use are focused on the mind-body relationship. This includes biofeedback, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and the Emotional Freedom Technique among other techniques. The goal is solution oriented behavioral changes, not just insight. Care will be given to your sleep and nutritional habits as well to other aspects of wellness and your circle of support.

At SMR Counseling Services, we get your mental health in shape. We work one-on-one with clients acting as "personal mental health trainers" which allows us to respond to the unique needs of each individual. Our goal is to help you uncover your true potential in order to lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. For twenty-five years, I have helped individuals, couples and families facing the difficult challenges that we all can face at times. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, uncertainty in your relationship, feeling stuck at work or facing the pain of infertility, I can help you gain clarity, improve your coping skills and help you find your way to an improved life. Selecting a psychotherapist is a highly personal decision and requires time and thought. The therapeutic relationship is collaborative and involves trust, as the issues addressed in therapy are difficult and often painful. Thus, a good fit between client and therapist is an important consideration when embarking on psychotherapy. To determine if I might be the right person for you to work with, I like to talk at some length before scheduling an initial appointment. This usually takes about thirty minutes, is done on the telephone, and there is no charge. We will discuss why you are seeking therapy and my professional approach to the issues you describe. If it does not seem to be the right match, either for clinical or practical reasons, I will suggest other options. Outlined below are some details regarding how my practice works once psychotherapy begins. I will protect the confidentiality of all information obtained in the course of therapy, except for compelling professional reasons, and in accordance with the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and the Laws of Maryland and/or the District of Columbia The general expectation that social workers will keep information confidential does not apply when disclosure is necessary to prevent serious, foreseeable, and imminent harm to a client or other identifiable person. In most situations, I can only release information about your treatment to others if you sign a written authorization form. However, there are some circumstances in which no authorization is required. Federal Law (HIPAA) specifies these circumstances.
A copy of your specific rights as a patient and health care recipient will be provided.
A therapy session will last for forty-five minutes.
Payment can be made at each session or monthly, by check.
Cancellation notice is required twenty-four hours prior to a scheduled session to avoid charges for missed appointments.
I do not participate in any insurance plans, with the exception of Kaiser-Permanente. I will provide you with a statement of service with codes and diagnosis required by insurance companies for out of network reimbursement. Check with your insurance provider for details.

Specialize in Helping Successfull, Stressed, Professionals
In 2001 Solutions & Results emerged from my commitment to develop an independent therapy center with integrity, focused on emotional development and transformation. We provide individual psychotherapy, coaching, couples therapy, group therapy and executive and organizational development. I specialize in helping successful, stressed professionals and executives to maximize their potential. There are many reasons people seek therapy, coaching or counseling. I understand how difficult it can be if you are experiencing any of the following and I have helped many people with: Low Energy Anxiety Sadness Stress Loneliness Self-esteem problems Crises Career Issues Marital and other relationship problems Grief Anger Or maybe you know you just don't feel quite right. I can help. We will explore your experience together in a safe, compassionate, and caring setting. Robert Hartford is a Systems-Centered Therapist (SCT). SCT* uses specific techniques to help achieve results. Being the only Licensed SCT* Therapist in DC and the surrounding area, means that when you join my private practice, you will get special attention. You will be part of an exclusive group of clientele, learning specialized techniques unique to SCT*. You can expect to get high level, sensitive, quality care, so you can progress and not be stuck in therapy forever. Choosing the right therapist is one of the most important things for successful therapy outcome. But it isn't anything about the therapist per se, that makes that so. What matters most is that the two of you are a good fit. The right relationship is what makes the difference. So come ... explore ... and see if this is the fit that works for you. Together we will uncover your hopes and dreams, identify the obstacles and discover ways to reduce them, allowing for the possibility of turning your potential into reality. I have heard it time and time again: "I've wanted to do this for a long time but I just didn't want to admit something was wrong with me. Now that I'm here, I realize it is not that something is wrong with me, I just want something more". Therapy does not mean you're broken; it is a tool for personal growth. If you want to gain awareness and learn more about you and your potential for increased wellness and fulfillment, therapy or coaching can give you the tools. SCT* and The Theory of Living Human Systems, developed by Yvonne Agazarian, finds that by reducing the constraints that prevent growth and development, energy is free to lead toward transformation. Don't expect to lie on the couch; this is not cookie cutter therapy and I will do more than just listen, say "yes", "hum", or "tell me more about that". I work along with you, using specialized methods and specific techniques to ensure you'll receive an excellent standard of personalized service. So when you join my private practice, you get my complete attention and focus on your situation so you can reach your goals over time. When you come aboard with me, be assured you'll get more than your typical psychotherapy. Psychotherapy can often lead to: more fulfilling relationships better understanding of yourself significant reduction in feelings of distress better control over life situations solutions to specific problems lessening of depressive symptoms healing of emotional wounds increased life skills reduction of anxiety greater self-confidence a rise in self-esteem better moods In July 2012 Robert was selected as a presenter for the 18th International Congress in Cartagena de Indias, Columbia. Robert received training with Rebecca Jorgensen. "Working with Couples: Comparing Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Systems-Centered Theoretical and Clinical Approaches" at the SCT* Conference in San Francisco.

Spiritual Therapy to Transform Your Inner
Demons to Inner Angels
Anger is just energy we generate when there is a difference between what we want and what we have. There are two types of anger, corrosive anger and authentic anger. Corrosive anger is just energy to change what is, to something worse. Corrosive anger is just unhealthy energy and the ultimate source of our lack of health, abundance and joy. Authentic anger is just energy to change what is, to something better. Authentic anger is just healthy energy and can produce a Garden of Eden on our planet. My publications and coaching are concerned with helping to make you aware of how you can choose to transform your corrosive energy into your authentic healing energy. You can then choose to live a better life, on your journey to the life of your dreams. Only hire me when you are ready to find out how to transform your corrosive energy into useful authentic healing energy to do what you really want to do at your highest levels. Only hire me when you are ready to be grateful and responsible for your own past and present results. One of the major premises of my publications and coaching is that we are totally responsible for our own results from our own decisions. We are the ones who decide what to accept, reject or modify from others. We are the ones who got ourselves to where we are and have made countless previous decisions, including how to respond to the decisions of others. My responsibility is to write and tell what I know has worked for me and some others in my experiences and what I believe so far. I only know what works best for me and some others. You will need to determine what works best for you, since everyone is unique. It is up to you, to find your own inner and outer team resources and your own choice of your spiritual growth path. When you need medical or other information, please go to the medical or other experts of your choice. I am not here for direction, I am just producing information for your consideration and choice. My emphasis is on spiritual health, wealth, and happiness. What happens on the physical level may be or may not be as rapid as what happens on the spiritual level.

Compassionate Focused Therapy
for Individuals & Couples
My practice offers inclusive and compassion focused individual and couple counseling and consultation. I help people learn how to observe their thoughts and feelings with less judgment. Mindfulness, empathy and self-compassion training is also offered. For couples, the Gottman method is an evidence-based approach to help you connect and communicate effectively to build a joyful connection and friendship with your partner. My style is active, warm, non-judgmental with a little gentle humor, as well. I consider and honor differences in how men and women think and feel. Should you decide to consult with me, you will be comfortable and supported in whatever style suits you best. There is no one right way to communicate, the key is understanding what makes each other tick and learning how to connect effectively. We all want to be seen and loved for who we are. We don’t want to feel stuck or worried or stressed. My practice includes counseling and support for individual adults, couples, interfaith couples, co-parents, new parents, families, mothers, fathers, teens, and women who may be struggling with the symptoms of postpartum depression. I also consult with parents who may have concerns about their child/teen and adults who want to make sense of their relationships with their own parents.

A Very Practical Therapist, Experienced and Caring
It is my motto that when you are in need, it is my practice to be responsive and available. I have a multitude of skills and training, and experience of over 30 years as a psychologist both in Rockville, for most of the time, as well as in rural Illinois for several years. I started as a child psychologist and moved on to train and work with the parents too using family therapy, and then became certified as a sex therapist, marriage counselor as well as NLP practitioner. I am also a trained Cognitive and DBT therapist. I do individual, couple and family therapy. I work with anxious, depressed and OCD as well as Bipolars and trauma survivors.. I have experience working with Identity issues (vocational, sexual and gender). I prefer to be more of a generalist. It keeps me well rounded and interested and my clients enjoy working with me on their marriage, depression, sleep issues and their kids' academic issues. I allow email communication when appropriate (within limits) to enhance and complement our work. My flexible hours, Sunday and evenings allow you to come after work and on the weekend. My assistant is trained to give you the hours you prefer, as soon as they become available. My office, in a suburban house, allows you not only privacy but also less impersonal feelings you may get in an office building.
