Therapy Services for Couples, Individuals, and Families
We are a group of licensed clinical marriage and family therapists who are committed to providing high quality therapy services for couples, families, individuals and groups. We see many different types of client issues, including but not limited to couples communication, anxiety, depression, anger, family and stepfamily difficulties, and premarital preparation. I have been in full-time private practice for over 10 years. As marriage and family therapists, my staff and I are specially trained to deal with the context between and around clients, in addition to whatever might be going on for them individually. My personal commitment is to provide a safe and welcoming environment in which we can help move clients from where they are struggling and challenged to personal growth, happiness, and greater connection with the ones they love. My relationship with my clients not only includes helping them in the crisis moments, but also being available throughout life for whatever may come up - many return to therapy for "tune-ups" at different points in their lives. I'm honored to be someone they feel safe enough with to return at those times when they need someone to listen. If this sounds like something that might be of help to you, please give us a call at 301-563-9520, or email us at info@laurelfay.com. We look forward to working with you.

Professional Therapy for Individuals, Couples, and Families
Washington, D.C. and Burtonsville, MD
At SMR Counseling Services, we get your mental health in shape. We work one-on-one with clients acting as "personal mental health trainers" which allows us to respond to the unique needs of each individual. Our goal is to help you uncover your true potential in order to lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. If you're looking for a "personal mental health trainer" to provide extra support and guidance through a challenging situation or you're just ready to move in a new direction in your life, we look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.

Reproductive concerns? Healing awaits.
I have experience working with a variety of areas of concern including reproductive challenges (infertility, pregnancy loss, and post-partum issues) depression, anxiety, self image, body image, as well as many others. I have extensive experience working with both adolescents and adults. I view effective therapy as a collaborative effort and continually seek out feedback as to how treatment is progressing. Since I believe that there is a strong connection between body and mind, I incorporate mind/body integration techniques, such as yoga and relaxation, which can relieve stress, anxiety and numerous other issues. At Integrative Therapy of Greater Washington, our clinicians work with all ages: from infants to grandparents. Our talented team can help with most any problem. We offer individual, couples, and family counseling; group therapy; and psychoeducational assessment.
Mental Health Matters
Mental Health Counselor / Therapist
Bethesda, MD 20814
Dr. Marcus believes that effective therapy is more than just talking about your problems. Many of us talk to our friends about our problems. Afterwards, we may feel better, but eventually we still find ourselves stuck in the problem. This is when you might consider working with a therapist. A good therapist can help you move beyond just talking about the problem. This is done by exploring not only what you think, but how you feel and how thoughts and feelings influence one another. Change begins to occur when you can clearly see the way your thoughts, feelings and life experiences have lead you to make choices that have been problematic. The hardest part is then working with your therapist to come up with different ways to handle life's challenges despite what you are used to feeling, thinking or doing. The Sex Therapy process is very similar to that experienced with other mental health practitioners. The Certified Sex Therapist will meet with the person as an individual or with a couple in an office setting where an extensive history of the concerns will be taken. The Certified Sex Therapist will note both the psychological and the physical components and will establish one or more diagnoses. After this, a treatment plan will be proposed, usually with your involvement in its development. In some instances, the Certified Sex Therapist may work closely with the person’s physician, nurse, or other therapist or counselor to establish causes and remedies for the problems. In no instances will a Certified Sex Therapist engage in any kind of sexual activity with a therapy patient/client, whether in the office or in any location. Don't let embarrassment or shame prevent you from seeking help and having the kind of sex life you desire. For those of you in relationship, think back to the time when you first met your partner. You saw him/her across the room, and something inside you said, she/he is the one. There was a sense of excitement and passion in you. You eventually meet and start dating. Eventually you start having sex and its passionate and really hot. Eventually you become a committed couple (for straight couples it may even lead to engagement and marriage). Romantic love, is natures way of bringing people together. Unfortunately, this phase does not last. Sometimes, power struggles may get in the way. The good news is that most of the power struggles we have can be overcome. Power struggles are opportunities for growth. They represent the issues we have yet to resolve from our childhood. If we can just put our reactivity on hold, engage in a constructive, safe and open dialogue with our partner, we will eventually see that the conflict dissolves. In couples therapy, Dr. Marcus works with clients on how to communicate and connect in a deep way. It is through understanding and connection that couples regain that romantic feeling and rekindle the passion that was once there in the early phase of the relationship.

For twenty-five years, I have helped individuals, couples and families facing the difficult challenges that we all can face at times. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, uncertainty in your relationship, feeling stuck at work or facing the pain of infertility, I can help you gain clarity, improve your coping skills and help you find your way to an improved life. Selecting a psychotherapist is a highly personal decision and requires time and thought. The therapeutic relationship is collaborative and involves trust, as the issues addressed in therapy are difficult and often painful. Thus, a good fit between client and therapist is an important consideration when embarking on psychotherapy. To determine if I might be the right person for you to work with, I like to talk at some length before scheduling an initial appointment. This usually takes about thirty minutes, is done on the telephone, and there is no charge. We will discuss why you are seeking therapy and my professional approach to the issues you describe. If it does not seem to be the right match, either for clinical or practical reasons, I will suggest other options. Outlined below are some details regarding how my practice works once psychotherapy begins. I will protect the confidentiality of all information obtained in the course of therapy, except for compelling professional reasons, and in accordance with the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and the Laws of Maryland and/or the District of Columbia The general expectation that social workers will keep information confidential does not apply when disclosure is necessary to prevent serious, foreseeable, and imminent harm to a client or other identifiable person. In most situations, I can only release information about your treatment to others if you sign a written authorization form. However, there are some circumstances in which no authorization is required. Federal Law (HIPAA) specifies these circumstances.
A copy of your specific rights as a patient and health care recipient will be provided.
A therapy session will last for forty-five minutes.
Payment can be made at each session or monthly, by check.
Cancellation notice is required twenty-four hours prior to a scheduled session to avoid charges for missed appointments.
I do not participate in any insurance plans, with the exception of Kaiser-Permanente. I will provide you with a statement of service with codes and diagnosis required by insurance companies for out of network reimbursement. Check with your insurance provider for details.

Spiritual Therapy to Transform Your Inner
Demons to Inner Angels
Anger is just energy we generate when there is a difference between what we want and what we have. There are two types of anger, corrosive anger and authentic anger. Corrosive anger is just energy to change what is, to something worse. Corrosive anger is just unhealthy energy and the ultimate source of our lack of health, abundance and joy. Authentic anger is just energy to change what is, to something better. Authentic anger is just healthy energy and can produce a Garden of Eden on our planet. My publications and coaching are concerned with helping to make you aware of how you can choose to transform your corrosive energy into your authentic healing energy. You can then choose to live a better life, on your journey to the life of your dreams. Only hire me when you are ready to find out how to transform your corrosive energy into useful authentic healing energy to do what you really want to do at your highest levels. Only hire me when you are ready to be grateful and responsible for your own past and present results. One of the major premises of my publications and coaching is that we are totally responsible for our own results from our own decisions. We are the ones who decide what to accept, reject or modify from others. We are the ones who got ourselves to where we are and have made countless previous decisions, including how to respond to the decisions of others. My responsibility is to write and tell what I know has worked for me and some others in my experiences and what I believe so far. I only know what works best for me and some others. You will need to determine what works best for you, since everyone is unique. It is up to you, to find your own inner and outer team resources and your own choice of your spiritual growth path. When you need medical or other information, please go to the medical or other experts of your choice. I am not here for direction, I am just producing information for your consideration and choice. My emphasis is on spiritual health, wealth, and happiness. What happens on the physical level may be or may not be as rapid as what happens on the spiritual level.

Compassionate Focused Therapy
for Individuals & Couples
My practice offers inclusive and compassion focused individual and couple counseling and consultation. I help people learn how to observe their thoughts and feelings with less judgment. Mindfulness, empathy and self-compassion training is also offered. For couples, the Gottman method is an evidence-based approach to help you connect and communicate effectively to build a joyful connection and friendship with your partner. My style is active, warm, non-judgmental with a little gentle humor, as well. I consider and honor differences in how men and women think and feel. Should you decide to consult with me, you will be comfortable and supported in whatever style suits you best. There is no one right way to communicate, the key is understanding what makes each other tick and learning how to connect effectively. We all want to be seen and loved for who we are. We don’t want to feel stuck or worried or stressed. My practice includes counseling and support for individual adults, couples, interfaith couples, co-parents, new parents, families, mothers, fathers, teens, and women who may be struggling with the symptoms of postpartum depression. I also consult with parents who may have concerns about their child/teen and adults who want to make sense of their relationships with their own parents.

A Very Practical Therapist, Experienced and Caring
It is my motto that when you are in need, it is my practice to be responsive and available. I have a multitude of skills and training, and experience of over 30 years as a psychologist both in Rockville, for most of the time, as well as in rural Illinois for several years. I started as a child psychologist and moved on to train and work with the parents too using family therapy, and then became certified as a sex therapist, marriage counselor as well as NLP practitioner. I am also a trained Cognitive and DBT therapist. I do individual, couple and family therapy. I work with anxious, depressed and OCD as well as Bipolars and trauma survivors.. I have experience working with Identity issues (vocational, sexual and gender). I prefer to be more of a generalist. It keeps me well rounded and interested and my clients enjoy working with me on their marriage, depression, sleep issues and their kids' academic issues. I allow email communication when appropriate (within limits) to enhance and complement our work. My flexible hours, Sunday and evenings allow you to come after work and on the weekend. My assistant is trained to give you the hours you prefer, as soon as they become available. My office, in a suburban house, allows you not only privacy but also less impersonal feelings you may get in an office building.
