The Sky's the Limit!
Child, Adolescent & Family Counseling
Raising kids is one of the most important jobs in the world. Parenting can be a lot of fun and challenging at the same time. Kids are often faced with issues that are overwhelming, frustrating and at times even hopeless. Some of them do not respond in the most positive ways. Parents have difficulty understanding why their best efforts sometimes don’t stop their kids from making poor choices, being depressed or decreasing anxiety. Through counseling I attempt to assist parents with their child or adolescent in identifying issues, overcoming challenges, and bridging gaps between them and their child. Counseling can help children and teens develop problem-solving skills and also teach them the importance of seeking help. I can help children, teens and families cope with stress and a variety of emotional and behavioral issues. Many children and teens need help dealing with school stress, such as homework, test anxiety, bullying, or peer pressure. Others need assistance to discuss family related stress such as divorce, death or illness. With a little assistance “The Sky’s The Limit!” Kids of all ages enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of my office. I use a variety of techniques when working with children and adolescents to initially establish a trusting relationship. Some techniques I utilize are play therapy, art therapy, behavior modification, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), role-playing, modeling, feeling identification, choice therapy and anger management.

...there is hope...there is help...
Life can be difficult and at times people may require the assistance of a professional counselor to aid them in resolving challenges in their lives. Truth and Grace Counseling, LLC, was established to provide an opportunity for individuals, couples, and families to receive therapy in a nonjudgmental environment from Karen M. Bridwell, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), who is dedicated to helping people more fully enjoy their life and purpose. Truth was chosen because there is a healing power that can be realized when the truth concerning a challenge is revealed and accepted, and Grace was chosen because Karen believes that conveying truth in a compassionate manner is important in therapy. There are varieties of reasons why people seek counseling, but no matter the motivation, Karen believes they want and need to be accepted right where they are. She approaches each individual's unique story from a nonjudgmental position, as she seeks to understand the client's perspective in an effort to help them overcome their challenges. She is a goal-oriented counselor who uses a combination of therapies with clients, selecting the techniques that work best with each individual as together she and the client decide, develop, and pursue agreed upon objectives. Developing a therapeutic relationship is important as she and the client work together to uncover the thoughts and behaviors that are counterproductive in the life of the person. Then Karen has the client put into practice the alternative thoughts and behaviors that make possible the positive changes that will enable them to more fully enjoy their life and purpose.

Mindset: Inspiration for the process of therapy can be drawn from one of the best movie quotes of all time, “No! Try not! Do or Do Not, There is no try.” These are very powerful words telling people, especially to those in therapy that you must either willingly make your own necessary and sometimes critical changes in your life or you don’t. Therapy is about actively regaining control of your personal energy. Therapy is a collaborative approach to healing and well-being between a client and therapist. The therapist helps guide a person into making better life decisions, but the client must intuitively think of new ways of managing their life stressors that they are comfortable starting and maintaining. Clients not willing to make changes for themselves will continue to spin helplessly and hopelessly out of control. The mind is constantly changing; people in therapy must also learn to continually adjust and adapt to new situations while keeping a mindful-eye on their past. Education and Training: Dr. Hurley received his Master of Arts (MA) in General and Theoretical Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in Teaneck, New Jersey. He graduated with a Doctoral Degree (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology at Forest Institute of Professional Psychology (FIPP) in Springfield, Missouri. At FIPP Dr. Hurley specialized in Marriage and Family Counseling. Other areas of training include neuro-psychology, anger management, bio-feedback, and pre-marital counseling. During his doctoral program he worked in a children’s psychiatric hospital. His internship was in community mental health, and he participated in a national study on Schizophrenia. Dr. Hurley’s post-doc residency was in substance abuse and rehabilitation. After his post-doc residency he spent two years in private practice in Libertyville, IL. Dr. Hurley then became the medical director for a Chicago based firm doing home health care delivering mental health therapy to Chicago’s south-side geriatric African-American population who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Dr. Hurley has taught undergraduate students at Robert Morris College in Aurora, IL and graduate students at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He finds teaching to be a change of pace and a way of leading a new generation of therapists into the Health Services Industry. His career path changed when he moved to Knoxville, TN. Dr. Hurley was the Clinical Director for Mental Health for Tennessee’s main intake prison facility. He worked with various criminals making sure that they received the help they needed and to minimize suicide attempts. Dr. Hurley’s stance on his education, training, and career is to always strive to learn more, to do more, and to be the best therapist possible. Therapeutic Stance: My approach to therapy with my clients is multi-faceted. There is no one therapy to fit all. I like to approach issues from a psycho-dynamic, family systems, CBT, Gestalt, existential, and medical stance. When dealing with mental health disorders you have to consider the mind as well as the body for the root of a problem. Therapy needs to be understandable by those who seek help and I have spent years refining my technique to help clients understand the issues they’re facing and the theories on how to resolve said issues. People feel more comfortable and understood if you can talk to them in the various places they are currently. I love to see individuals, couples, and groups in a calm, peaceful, and most importantly neutral environment. I love to make presentations to groups for psycho-educational purposes as well.

There Is Light at the End of the Tunnel!
Change and growth are often preceded by some difficulty, personally, professionally or in relationship. I congratulate your willingness to get support in overcoming the challenges you are facing. My intention is to assist you in living from genuine strength and authenticity. I will help you resolve problems and achieve happiness. In our work together, you will discover that difficulties and obstacles in life are often blessings for in reality we grow through adversity. This process of growth liberates energy bound in unresolved issues, so that energy can be used to create a life of your own design. I employ a learning paradigm. A learning paradigm does not presume anything wrong with you -- it simply presents things you can learn to make your life more easeful and productive. I utilize a spiritual psychological approach that is based on the understanding that our true essence is spiritual and that our body, mind and emotions are vehicles for spiritual expression. This essence is present in every moment and we have the opportunity to connect with and respond to its guidance. You will discover that every psychological limitation or difficulty provides a special kind of opportunity -- to see where you have lost touch with essential aspects of your being and to recover these lost parts of yourself. Once recovered these energies can be directed toward creating a life that is rich and satisfying. Reach out if you are interested in exploring possibility beyond what you currently can imagine, to actualize a more joyful, peaceful life. NOTE: I am an out-of-network provider. I do not take any insurance.
