Effective Counseling for Adolescents, Teens and Adults
Individual and Family Therapy
I provide individual and family counseling to all kinds of people with all kinds of struggles, from adolescence through adulthood. I specialize in treatment of anxiety and depression, but I am especially interested in the circumstances that cause them. This can include difficult life transitions, social problems, romantic relationship issues, family conflict, low self-esteem, grief and loss, history of abuse and anger problems--just to name a few. I also work with individuals who have undergone trauma. My goal is to give you some coping skills to help you feel better immediately, while working on the larger issues in need of change. My approach is broad, and combines elements of psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal and family systems therapies. Most importantly, I am strengths-based. I design the therapeutic intervention around the unique strengths and needs of each client. I believe that success in counseling is largely about finding the right fit with your therapist. That's why I offer a free hour of consultation, either by phone or in person. If you are under the age of 18, you are welcome to bring a trusted adult.

Helping You Become...
Emotion Focused, Mindfulness-Based and Existential Therapy
I have discovered that I work somewhat differently with different people; this is probably because each client is different and has different problems, strengths, needs and goals, and because, in each case, a unique relationship develops between me and the client. In all cases, I place the utmost importance on deeply understanding the client’s experience and on meeting that person with empathy and respect. I believe that people contain the seeds of their own authenticity and development, and that it is the therapist’s job to help the client remove what blocks his or her natural growth. When working with individuals, I use Emotion-Focused Therapy, existential therapy, and mindfulness-based therapy, as well as other techniques. I also pay a lot of attention to people’s histories in order to understand how their past development and experiences might be affecting their current capacity to live well in the present and imagine a future. Finally, I sometimes use Lifespan Integration© therapy to help clients integrate bodily/emotional memories from infancy, childhood and adolescence with their adult capacities for understanding. I find Lifespan Integration to be especially helpful for healing recent trauma gently without re-traumatizing. In couples counseling, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy to help partners deeply reconnect on the level of needs and feelings (as opposed to having that same unproductive argument over and over again). Once couples have learned to communicate in a way that is likely to get their needs met and have had help in healing breaches of trust, they generally find they can solve other problems without therapeutic help. Main Counseling Services: mental health counseling services (sometimes called “therapy” or “psychotherapy”) for individual adults couples counseling for couples in conflict, couples seeking to address specific relationship problems, and couples wishing to enhance their relationships grief counseling, trauma counseling, and treatment for people suffering from anxiety or depression, as well as for those working through identity issues, life transitions, or a variety of other problems counseling for people adjusting to, or coming to terms with, physical disability, sensory disability, chronic illness, life-threatening illness, or terminal illness counseling for family members of people with disabilities and/or illnesses, such as those needing help with caregiver stress counseling for crime victims under Washington State’s Crime Victims Compensation Program.

Helping You to Manage the Unmanageable
Conflict Is Unavoidable, Grow Stronger Through It!
There are two arenas within which we struggle with conflict: intrapersonal conflict (the conflict within us), and interpersonal conflict (the conflict between us). The better able we are in managing the conflict within us, the more effective we will be at managing the conflict between us. Whether you struggle with anger, stress, addiction, or marital issues, I offer individual, couple, and family sessions, and anger management workshops (that meet court order requirements), along with weekly education & support groups specifically for men.

Individual and Couple Counseling in University Village Area
of Seattle Since 1990. Near the University of Washington.
Welcome I am a master level psychotherapist in private practice in Seattle since 1990 working with individuals, couples, and families. The variety of issues I assist people with include: Depression Stress Anxiety Relationship Career and Life Transitions Divorce Physical/Sexual Abuse Adoption Roadblocks to Getting Started With Counseling What being in counseling means Sometimes people feel embarrassed that they are unable to resolve their problems on their own and need professional help. Needing assistance makes them feel weak. It actually takes personal strength to admit you have a problem and take the action to solve it. One of the goals of counseling is to help you to ultimately adopt tools that would be conducive to preventing a similar experience/situation in the future. Will the counselor understand? Will I be criticized? Problems that people discuss in counseling are very personal and therefore people feel vulnerable. Being concerned about how the counselor will respond is common, especially if you have been criticized or ridiculed for sharing your versions of your experiences with those important to you. Am I helpless? Part of being depressed is a feeling of helplessness. Feeling helpless and being helpless are not the same thing. You are not helpless. You have begun the process of seeking help with a personal problem and reaching some resolution to these problems. How do I get started? It is important to find a counselor with whom you would be comfortable working. Choosing one that works on issues you are dealing with and meeting with them is a good start. Sometimes people meet with more than one counselor before deciding which one to continue with. If you have insurance you can contact them and ask if a certain provider is on their preferred provider list. They may also cover a non-preferred provider but at a different rate. If you don’t have insurance many providers offer a sliding scale or an every other week appointment schedule might be arranged. If an arrangement with that counselor cannot be worked out they may have information concerning other resources in your area that would be appropriate.

Counseling and Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a means by which we realize acceptance, solutions and understanding for what life throws our way. The process facilitates a sacred relationship which allows for us to be known and seen for who, what and where we are. Doing my own work in the patient seat has made it possible for me to use all my life challenges to do the work with others.

Psychotherapist
Welcome. I am a psychotherapist who helps people with chronic medical conditions navigate this often complex terrain in order to better connect with their wisdom and to live more fully, with meaning and purpose. I work to help you integrate your body's inner healing wisdom to align with and maximize the powerful tools available to us via Western medicine. Through psychotherapy and mindfulness training, I can help you learn the skills to live well and manage your illness, with grace and with meaning. Through talk therapy, I help people cope with a new diagnosis, learn skills and be mindful about their health experience, pulling from the best in both Western and Eastern medical tradtions. I teach skills for stress reduction, relaxation and mindfulness. Each day, it seems, the medical community learns more about the relationship between stress reduction and brain science. These are interconnected, and it is so impressive that even a mature brain can rewire itself for healthier functioning and a more content outlook on life. Guiding Principles: I intend to embody respect for the innovation and rigor of western medicine and the tradition of psychotherapy while incorporating the grace and depth of the traditions of Eastern thought. My therapeutic approach empowers clients to voice their concerns and make good decisions. I am committed to clear communication with physicians and other health care team members.

Therapy for Children and Adolescents
I’m a Licensed Social Worker Associate Independent Clinical (LSWAIC). Since I have an associate license, I still receive supervision from a licensed provider. I’m originally from New York State but have also lived in Illinois and Kansas. I’m passionate about working with adolescents and providing treatments that are based on scientific research showing that it’s effective in treating the problem. I have many years of experience working with children, adolescents, young adults and families. I believe it’s important to involve parents in treatment while working with adolescents so that we can work as a team to meet goals while also allowing adolescents to take the lead in their treatment. I work with individuals ages 9-25 and their parents. I have training in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical-Behavior Therapy, Family Based Treatment for eating disorders, Exposure Therapy, Behavioral Parent Training and a strong passion working with adolescents, young adults and families. Diagnoses that I’ve worked with include but are not limited to: Anxiety Disorders, Depression/Mood Disorders, Adjustment, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), ADHD, eating disorders, emotional dysregulation and transitions. I also offer ADHD evaluations. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about treatment I provide or disorders that I treat!

Asperger's Counseling
at the Center of the Universe
I use traditional "talk therapy" to meet you where you are while applying the techniques of mindfulness based stress reduction, cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal neurobiology and other approaches to help you uncover your authentic self and ultimately reach your optimum potential. I believe that no one understands your experience as well as you do. I also believe real growth and positive change are most possible when a person feels safe and supported. For that reason, I strive to create an honest, sincere, non-judgmental and personable environment for the purposes of counseling and therapy. Autism and Asperger's are my specialties. I have over 15 years of clinical experience working with Children, Teens and Adults with ASD. I also provide counseling and support for parents and family members who are caring for a loved one with ASD and conduct workshops on academic skill development. I offer Social Awareness and Confidence Group for Children, Teens and Adults. Groups are intentionally small (no more than 3 in a group) and carefully selected to ensure a good fit for all. Rates for groups are much lower than individual therapy.

Abundant Life Realized
I have lived, played, and worked in Seattle and the Puget Sound Region since 2002. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor I work as a full-time Therapist in Seattle and Redmond. I received a Masters in Counseling and Certificate in DV Advocacy from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology in December 2006. In my counseling practice I come from two primary perspectives. The first perspective is that examining the themes and stories of my past will enhance my ability to lead a healthy and fulfilling life today. Stories about our families, caregivers, schools, friends, breakups, successful relationships and abusive ones all can have power in the here and now. In other words I strongly promote the idea of the examined life as the quickest and surest way to happiness and fulfillment. The second perspective I bring to my practice is as follows. There really is no point to doing 'therapy' if I am currently not living a life where my basic needs are being met. Sudden tragedy, compulsive behaviors and addictions, financial stresses, changing careers, and other significant "disruptions" can all be reasons to seek help from therapy. Emergent issues and basic needs will be addressed first and foremost.

Affordable Quality Counseling
My intent in a counseling session is to show up as my whole self, and make space for you to show up as your whole self. I believe that people have an innate ability to heal, and I know that the keys to balance and well being exist inside of you. My work as a therapist is to use the tools and skills that I have learned and those that are inherent in me, to unblock the barriers on your path to health and wholeness. It is my hope, that I may aid you in calling home the lost and wounded parts of yourself and integrate that back into the complete and amazing you. I maintain a commitment to anti-oppression in my practice and my personal life. I hold in my awareness the realities of privilege and oppression and work continuously to seek new information in service of liberation. I abide by the code of ethics of both the State of Washington and the American Counseling Association.
