Effective Counseling for Adolescents, Teens and Adults
Individual and Family Therapy
I provide individual and family counseling to all kinds of people with all kinds of struggles, from adolescence through adulthood. I specialize in treatment of anxiety and depression, but I am especially interested in the circumstances that cause them. This can include difficult life transitions, social problems, romantic relationship issues, family conflict, low self-esteem, grief and loss, history of abuse and anger problems--just to name a few. I also work with individuals who have undergone trauma. My goal is to give you some coping skills to help you feel better immediately, while working on the larger issues in need of change. My approach is broad, and combines elements of psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal and family systems therapies. Most importantly, I am strengths-based. I design the therapeutic intervention around the unique strengths and needs of each client. I believe that success in counseling is largely about finding the right fit with your therapist. That's why I offer a free hour of consultation, either by phone or in person. If you are under the age of 18, you are welcome to bring a trusted adult.

Helping You Become...
Emotion Focused, Mindfulness-Based and Existential Therapy
I have discovered that I work somewhat differently with different people; this is probably because each client is different and has different problems, strengths, needs and goals, and because, in each case, a unique relationship develops between me and the client. In all cases, I place the utmost importance on deeply understanding the client’s experience and on meeting that person with empathy and respect. I believe that people contain the seeds of their own authenticity and development, and that it is the therapist’s job to help the client remove what blocks his or her natural growth. When working with individuals, I use Emotion-Focused Therapy, existential therapy, and mindfulness-based therapy, as well as other techniques. I also pay a lot of attention to people’s histories in order to understand how their past development and experiences might be affecting their current capacity to live well in the present and imagine a future. Finally, I sometimes use Lifespan Integration© therapy to help clients integrate bodily/emotional memories from infancy, childhood and adolescence with their adult capacities for understanding. I find Lifespan Integration to be especially helpful for healing recent trauma gently without re-traumatizing. In couples counseling, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy to help partners deeply reconnect on the level of needs and feelings (as opposed to having that same unproductive argument over and over again). Once couples have learned to communicate in a way that is likely to get their needs met and have had help in healing breaches of trust, they generally find they can solve other problems without therapeutic help. Main Counseling Services: mental health counseling services (sometimes called “therapy” or “psychotherapy”) for individual adults couples counseling for couples in conflict, couples seeking to address specific relationship problems, and couples wishing to enhance their relationships grief counseling, trauma counseling, and treatment for people suffering from anxiety or depression, as well as for those working through identity issues, life transitions, or a variety of other problems counseling for people adjusting to, or coming to terms with, physical disability, sensory disability, chronic illness, life-threatening illness, or terminal illness counseling for family members of people with disabilities and/or illnesses, such as those needing help with caregiver stress counseling for crime victims under Washington State’s Crime Victims Compensation Program.

Individual and Couple Counseling in University Village Area
of Seattle Since 1990. Near the University of Washington.
Welcome I am a master level psychotherapist in private practice in Seattle since 1990 working with individuals, couples, and families. The variety of issues I assist people with include: Depression Stress Anxiety Relationship Career and Life Transitions Divorce Physical/Sexual Abuse Adoption Roadblocks to Getting Started With Counseling What being in counseling means Sometimes people feel embarrassed that they are unable to resolve their problems on their own and need professional help. Needing assistance makes them feel weak. It actually takes personal strength to admit you have a problem and take the action to solve it. One of the goals of counseling is to help you to ultimately adopt tools that would be conducive to preventing a similar experience/situation in the future. Will the counselor understand? Will I be criticized? Problems that people discuss in counseling are very personal and therefore people feel vulnerable. Being concerned about how the counselor will respond is common, especially if you have been criticized or ridiculed for sharing your versions of your experiences with those important to you. Am I helpless? Part of being depressed is a feeling of helplessness. Feeling helpless and being helpless are not the same thing. You are not helpless. You have begun the process of seeking help with a personal problem and reaching some resolution to these problems. How do I get started? It is important to find a counselor with whom you would be comfortable working. Choosing one that works on issues you are dealing with and meeting with them is a good start. Sometimes people meet with more than one counselor before deciding which one to continue with. If you have insurance you can contact them and ask if a certain provider is on their preferred provider list. They may also cover a non-preferred provider but at a different rate. If you don’t have insurance many providers offer a sliding scale or an every other week appointment schedule might be arranged. If an arrangement with that counselor cannot be worked out they may have information concerning other resources in your area that would be appropriate.

Psychotherapy with a Spiritual Orientation
We are each unique and precious expressions of something vast and perfect - of True Nature. Our lives unfold naturally as this expression when we are able to see through our "conditioned self" and connect with what is most real in us. To see through our "conditioned self", we need to develop the capacity to discriminate between what is deeply true for us and what we've taken to be the truth through our conditioning. We need to learn to be there for ourselves with openness, curiosity, strength, and kindness as we do this challenging work. It is a tremendous support to have a seasoned professional that you can trust to gently yet firmly support and guide you in this work.

Beyond Talk Therapy
Looking for an effective alternative to traditional therapy? I have over 20 years experience as a Psychotherapist and Counselor as well as additional training in Psychosynthesis (Transpersonal Psychology), EMDR, Hypnosis and NLP. I am also a Reiki Master and trained in other energy modalities including sound healing and have found energy work to be extremely effective as an adjunct to Psychotherapy. Each person is unique and I have found that different modalities can help individuals heal more quickly on a deeper level. Working with you I draw upon my experience, education and my own spiritual and contemplative practices to help you clear away blocks from the past and discover and live from your true self. I offer talk therapy and energy work either individually or combined. Finding the right therapist is important so I would be glad to talk with you to help determine if I would be a good fit. Best Wishes on your journey.

Spiritual Psychotherapist
In our demanding world, we often learn to silence ourselves, to shut out our unique thoughts, dreams and beliefs in favor of what think we should do or who we think we should be. In this way, we learn a pattern of self-denial that can leave us feeling afraid, anxious, confused, depressed, ashamed and lonely. My clients come to me because they are looking to rediscover themselves, to find their passions and to heal the wounds that prevent them from living their most authentic lives. Often they are focused around the needs and concerns of others to the degree that they forget or even have difficulty recognizing their own. Utilizing an integrative "psycho-spiritual" approach, energetic and body-centered techniques, I help my clients get in touch with who they are and what they want. I help them find and honor their own voices as well as all the different parts of themselves that are longing to be loved and given a place. This often means helping my clients access their "felt sense," or intuitive knowing, which is the language of the heart and soul. In doing this, they not only come to know themselves and their story better, but they also have the opportunity to connect with something larger and the spiritual truths and stories that frame their lives. I offer a sliding fee scale for those who meet the criteria and am happy to provide a receipt for insurance reimbursement.

EMDR Practitioner
I work with children, adults, and couples. My main training is in the psychodynamic orientation, but I also have experience in cognitive-behavioral and brief psychotherapy. In addition to general psychotherapy, I have specific training and experience in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is especially suited to those who have been traumatized, are anxious, or have experienced debilitating loss. The nature and extent of psychological treatment varies according to the issues involved. In general, treatment entails an identification of problem areas, an increasing understanding of the external circumstances and internal thoughts and feelings that contribute to the difficulties, and an exploration of the clients' strengths suited to addressing their issues. When appropriate, treatment may also involve an exploration of patterns of relationships formed in the past, their influence on current difficulties, and changes the client may want to make to secure more stable relationships in the future.

Psychotherapy for Mind, Body and Spirit
I work with individuals and groups who intend to live fully, in mind, body and spirit. The way I see and practice psychotherapy can help you to come to terms with emotions and experiences; and can give you a new start to live your life to your full potential. My goal is to assist you in gaining tools for transformation and to support you in realizing your abilities and making them a reality. If you are interested in the more technical aspect of my work, my theoretical training includes the approaches of Rogers, Jung , Adler, Perls, and Maslow. My PhD studies focused on studying altered states of consciousness, dreams, symbols and archetypes. For clients interested in the transpersonal approach, I can offer processes to awaken the wider dimensions of consciousness. This provides a larger perspective to life, looking at questions like “What is my purpose?” or ” What did my soul come to accomplish?” The transpersonal approach may include cultivating expanded states of consciousness such as meditation, inter-life experiences, hypnosis, and intuition. This can help you to unfold your own intuitive and subconscious awareness so you can foster your own self-healing and experience a greater self-expression.

Self Actualization + Social Liberation = Being Unleashed
Trauma, Grief, & Embodiment
Family transitions, loss and grief and personal journeys are all deeply intertwined. Each time there is a shift or change in the family, it deeply affects every member. Each individual has their own reaction and perceptions of the event, has their own grieving to do and will be changed in ways we often cannot predict. When you are experiencing transitions and changes in your life, which includes the death of a relationship or a person, it alters the course of your own personal journey through this world. I focus my practice on helping you learn to navigate these changes, explore the emotions that are connected to them for you, dig into old stories that may affect your perceptions, and support and guide you to being the brilliant and unique person you were born to be. My work centers around three basic concepts: 1. Every person is doing the best they can in any situation with the tools they believe are available to them; 2. The client is the ultimate expert on themselves; and 3. In community people find support and are exposed to different ideas and ways of being in the world and with each other. To support these ideas, I use an eclectic combination of modalities including humanistic, feminist, narrative, biopsychosocial, object relations (attachment) and mindfulness approaches. My style is strength-based, collaborative and interactive. I find that these techniques combined with a strong therapeutic relationship can be a recipe for success. I can work with you to better understand yourself and how you work. I believe that change can only occur if the client is dedicated to doing the necessary work; I am only a guide. I support the belief that all people should be able to benefit themselves through the therapeutic process. For this reason, I offer a sliding scale of fee to a limited number of clients. Unfortunately, I cannot take insurance, however can offer a receipt for you to submit to your insurance for reimbursement if you like. Finding the right counselor is an important part of the process. That is why our first thirty minute meeting is always complimentary. This meeting allows us to get to know each other, ask questions, and determine whether or not this is the right fit for you. In addition to in-person counseling, I offer online workshops as well as parent and life coaching via Skype. I also offer in-person workshops and support groups. To explore if my work could benefit you, your relationship or your family, I offer a free 30-minute in-person consultation. During this time we can briefly discuss what is motivating you to come into therapy, what you hope to gain by it, how I work and the philosophies that guide me in my practice and in working with others. To schedule, please call or email me I will return your call or email within 48-hours.

Affordable Quality Counseling
My intent in a counseling session is to show up as my whole self, and make space for you to show up as your whole self. I believe that people have an innate ability to heal, and I know that the keys to balance and well being exist inside of you. My work as a therapist is to use the tools and skills that I have learned and those that are inherent in me, to unblock the barriers on your path to health and wholeness. It is my hope, that I may aid you in calling home the lost and wounded parts of yourself and integrate that back into the complete and amazing you. I maintain a commitment to anti-oppression in my practice and my personal life. I hold in my awareness the realities of privilege and oppression and work continuously to seek new information in service of liberation.
