Being fully alive, having a fulfilling life and healthy relationships is possible for all of us. But we can get in our own way and short change ourselves. Fear, guilt, shame, sadness, pain, past traumas, addictions and compulsions all contribute to stifling the possibilities of who we are and what we can be. I believe that a careful exploration of these obstacles can open us up to a more authentic self, full of life, courage and our true potential. Practicing since 1989, I integrate psychotherapy with Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT, Mindfullness and Emotionally Focused Therapy to help eliminate emotional and psychological blocks and get on with the task of living a full life.

Psychotherapy Practice
Using a relational model, I offer people a safe and trusting environment to explore life challenges, hopes and goals. My expertise is in trauma recovery, eating disorders/body image and addictions. However, I enjoy all areas of mental health and wellness. My approach to therapy is fluid, depending on where a person is at any particular time. Throughout the course of therapy, a person's needs change, so the approach needs to remain flexible. Some of the work I offer is related to family of origin, improving the quality of relationships, mind-body awareness and making cognitive-behavioral changes. I use various techniques that include psychoeducation, role play, psychodrama and an energy therapy called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).

Are You Experiencing a Loss or Other Life Transition?
Are you grieving the loss of an important person in your life? Grief can shake your world. You might be struggling with conflicting feelings, a need to, and sometimes a fear of, expressing and understanding your feelings; seeking a way to honor the deceased person; struggling to live your day-to-day life; and wondering what your future will be like. Are you experiencing a life-stage transition such as early adulthood or midlife? Are you overwhelmed and uncertain, feeling sad, anxious, grief-stricken, resentful, conflicted, or confused? Change of all types stirs up unsettling feelings, including unresolved issues, memories and traumas. Or, you might feel a sense of loss one minute, and a sense of new frontiers the next. You might feel like a stranger to yourself, acting in ways that are different from your usual ways of acting and being in the world. Transitions are a part of life, just as they are a part of nature. They are special times because they provide an opening for increased self-understanding and for strengthening your core self. Whether you have chosen a transition or it has come into your life without your choosing or wanting it, a transition offers you an opportunity to increase your self-confidence and your ability to make more conscious choices. ~ Though it may seem daunting, sorting out your feelings with a trained professional can enhance your sense of control and well-being, helping you weather the difficulties and make a smoother transition. When your feelings overwhelm you, they can cloud your vision and interfere with your best intentions. When they are given a voice in a safe place with a compassionate and skilled listener, rather than being at their mercy, your feelings can infuse your life with energy and passion. I enjoy helping people find, listen to, and accept the wisdom of their own inner voice while navigating difficult life transitions.

Individual, Couples & Group Therapy
I understand the importance of developing resilience-to-change in order to effectively cope with major life transitions; loss and endings (divorce, retirement, serious medical illness) as well as beginnings (new relationships, marriage, birth of a child, starting a career). Without such resilience, life can feel overwhelming, self esteem becomes precarious, and mood can dip dramatically. As a licensed clinical psychologist, with more than 30 years experience, my clients value my warm, collaborative approach to relationship issues, executive stress, inter-generational conflicts, mid-life issues, and self-defeating behaviors that keep people stuck. Previous experience as an officer and director of a publicly traded company, as well as in the practice of business law, have uniquely equipped me to help entrepreneurs and executives with a variety of interpersonal business-related issues. I understand legal and business issues in a way that facilitates working with those having difficulties with employers, employees, and co-workers. I can also effectively help with difficulties relating to the stress of balancing work with other life issues. I also work with adolescents who face more than the usual growing pains, parents who want to do a better job with their children, and couples (in both traditional and non-traditional relationships), helping them to relate in more emotionally-satisfying ways. As Co-Director for 10 years, of the Center for Coping with Chronic Illness, I have helped patients and their families, as well as professional caregivers, deal with the impact of the ongoing medical concerns. I work with clients in individual, couples or group psychotherapy or a combination of these, depending on the goals of treatment. In general the clients I see in psychotherapy include homemakers, college students, stressed executives, academics, and other high functioning professionals. Many of my clients find my background in law and business to be a good fit for understanding their issues and conflicts. The treatment issues that I specialize in and and the diverse populations that I work with are listed below. My services may be covered by your insurance plan. Even if I am not listed on your panel of providers, some coverage may be available to you if you have out-of-network benefits. I am a licensed clinical psychologist, who works collaboratively with clients to help them improve relationships and take better care of themselves emotionally. Adult children of aging parents, ACOA's, spouses of substance abusers and professional caregivers (including therapists) value my warm, collaborative style and respect for each individual's unique ways of adapting. Through my books, lectures and teaching, I have trained and supervised 100s of clinicians in group psychotherapy, as well as individual and couples therapy. I teach what I love about my work -- helping clients to feel more empowered in relationships, to improve self-esteem, and to deal with family-of-origin issues, communication problems, life transitions, anxiety, depression, and self-defeating behaviors (including addictions). As founder and former Director of the Substance Abuse Outpatient Clinic at McLean Hospital, I have helped family members to cope with the pain of chaotic and unpredictable lives, find more effective ways of intervening to help their loved ones, and improve the quality of their own lives. I have a special interest in helping clients deal with the complicated feelings and emotional upheaval often associated with major transitions in their own lives and those of family members (marriage, divorce,empty-nest, retirement and bereavement). This work may be done in individual therapy, couples therapy or group therapy.

Offering combination of psychotherapy, private yoga,
and trauma-informed yoga sessions
We are all presented with challenges, stressors, and anxieties on a daily basis. Most of us have become conditioned to respond, both behaviorally and emotionally, in certain ways due to past experiences or environments. Some have even endured significant past trauma that may still be affecting their present lives.

Talk therapy is a useful tool for many and it often can help clients reach new levels of insight into their lives and relationships with others. However for some, alternatives are needed. Each client is unique and my aim is to create an individually tailored approach to treatment. Many people may not be able, or simply may not want to access feelings/cognitions right away, and it can be helpful to start in the body. Treatment is often most effective when the body is part of the healing process. In my practice, I hope to teach clients the “language of their bodies.” Emotions and trauma are often stored or trapped in the body. Yoga and other mindfulness techniques can be used to help clients reconnect with their bodies, giving them an opportunity to have a present moment experience both physically and emotionally. As a psychotherapist and yoga practitioner I will give my clients tools to re-inhabit their bodies in a new way. Sessions will be client centered and can start with talking and lead into movement; start with movement and lead into talking; integrate movement and talking together – or just focus on movement alone. I hope to be able to provide an experience that is most useful for the client – which can change on any given day, or even within the session itself.

Mental Health Counselor / Therapist
Newton, MA 02459
My approach to counseling is collaborative in that I enter into a partnership with my clients rather than maintaining the distanced stance of an expert. My view is that each person contains within them all of the resources necessary for healing and transformation and that my role in the relationship is to help them to see and actualize these strengths. The expressive arts are an incredibly useful aid in this process of self-understanding and the techniques I have been developing can also serve as tools of coping and adaptation as well. My training enables me to integrate the arts into traditional counseling practices in a way that supports and deepens the healing process. I have worked with clients struggling to overcome a wide range of issues in their lives including depression, anxiety, domestic violence, trauma, grief and loss as well as more the more general challenge of life transitions. I have been continuously amazed at the resilience of the human spirit and the power of the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for navigating the waters of the unknown. These difficulties can be our greatest teachers if we consider ourselves worthy of happiness and I am committed to using my own strengths of compassion and a deep understanding of human nature to help people find their way along this path.

Psychotherapy with individuals and couples
I see therapy as a collaborative relationship that involves compassion and challenge. I actively engage with people to help them move through places where they are stuck in their lives. This may involve letting go of past hurts, learning loving kindness, developing skills and agency for living, and being able to play and experience joy. Each therapy is unique: it is devised to facilitate living a full, creative, and meaningful life. I work with individuals and couples. I am very helpful working with people in life transitions: Addressing blind-spots in current work situations that connect to unresolved historical issues; ways in which people are stuck regarding relationships, for example, compromising themselves because of an old and limiting version of their sense of self that is not true and leads them into unsatisfying relationships. I understand the importance of these aspects of people’s lives. I create a safe space for people to learn about themselves and experience themselves authentically.

Every relationship deserves to succeed.
Conflicts in a marriage are rarely about the issues, but instead how couples talk about the issues. In our couples counseling sessions, partners communicate face-to-face, openly and honestly about their issues. Throughout the conversation we will identify and prevent flashpoints that create conflict escalation. We will give feedback and provide direction toward the most effective way of communicating in a given situation. Our feedback encourages respectful and mutually compassionate interactions, and helps dispel miscommunications that cause marital tensions. Small steps soon become major strides as couples progress from confrontation and impasse toward an understanding of their differences. The underlying goal of our sessions is to: • Increase the pleasure of spending time with your partner • Heighten or reestablish emotional intimacy • Help rediscover happiness in your relationship Over the years, Relationship Resources has helped hundreds of married and unmarried couples undo rigid and negative patterns of behavior and transform their relationships to newfound levels of happiness and enjoyment.

Individual and Couples Therapy
The amount of training I have is what differentiates me from other psychologists. I believe in meeting someone where they are at and do so by drawing from a wide range of types of interventions. I treat clients from young children and adolescents to adults and couples. Parenting, stress management, relationship issues, ADHD, anxiety and depression are my specialty areas. Individual Therapy Through developing a warm and trusting relationship, we will utilize your strengths to help you learn more effective ways to cope with life’s struggles, feel more in control of yourself and your life, and improve your connections with others to get your needs met. We will begin to understand and heal your pain in a way that is tolerable in order to change underlying patterns of behavior. You will learn concrete strategies to manage feelings so that you do not become overwhelmed. Often people come in due to an inner critic that is costing them their joy. If this describes a big part of your inner struggles, you will learn how to stop your internal judge and fear of judgment from others from running and ruining your life. Frequent areas addressed in individual therapy: Relationship Issues Considering or Adjusting To Separation/ Divorce Stress Reduction Depression or Loss Issues Self Esteem Issues Anxiety and Sleep Problems Addiction Trauma Anger Management Issues Career issues and changes LGBT issues Finding the right couples therapist is key given you are ready to work on one of the most central relationships in your life. Some conversations are easier to have with help, especially if you want them to go differently or they are on sensitive topics. My focus is on creating a safe space so you can learn new strategies to work through problems together effectively, learn how to be less reactive, and gain perspective on your relationship. Whether you are choosing to find a way back to each other if there has been a rupture in the trust, save your marriage or find a way to separate amicably, handle a divorce, or just need help finding your way through a transition or parenting issues, I can help! If your relationship has become more of a business relationship than an intimate one, you will learn how to increase your passion for each other again. I have been extensively trained by John Gottman, as well as by Toni Herbine Blank, and work with both heterosexual and homosexual couples. I feel privileged to see the tremendous benefits couples enjoy when they are committed to making changes. Frequent areas couples seek help for include: Communication Increased Connection Appreciation and Support Infidelity Parenting Issues Financial Stress Anger Management Sexual Intimacy Assistance with Life Transitions (premarita

Get to the Real Issues and See Results!
Many of my clients have tried talk therapy and found that they had limited results. That's because most issues reside in the subconscious mind, and simply discussing the problem is a conscious mind activity. I help clients access subconscious material directly through experiential methods that include EMDR, EFT, Hypnotherapy and Gestalt therapy. Many clients find that these methods work quickly and effectively to access and begin to transform unwanted beliefs and patterns. I work intuitively and encourage my clients to enhance their own intuitive sense, learning to listen to and trust their own inner wisdom. As a Certified Life Coach, I sometimes work with clients to create the life they always wanted and to learn to fulfill their life purpose. I take Blue Cross / Blue Shield, Tufts, United, and Harvard Pilgrim. Out-of-pocket charges are $120 per session.

Effective Therapy Creates
Meaningful, Lasting, Joyful Change
Each of us is unique, complex and special. Together we can resolve the inner and outer conflicts that create pain and exhaustion. Our life often brings experiences not of our choosing. Sometimes we’re hurt by others. Sometimes we don’t fit easily into the world we live in. Sometimes what life brings feels too big to accept and manage. I can help you find peaceful and practical ways of doing the best you can with what is, of managing your self and situations with compassion and skill, of finding joy and nourishment in this life at this time. For over 25 years I have been practicing my craft with children, adolescents, middle adults, elders, couples and families. They have come to me with developmental, situational and relational issues. Some had experienced tragedies; some felt overwhelmed by their children or partner. Some were deeply grieving, some filled with anger. Some had illnesses or disabilities they wish they didn’t. Each of them added to my understanding of what it is to be human. Most of us long for happiness, self acceptance, caring relationships and success in our endeavors. Together, drawing from my extensive training and experience and your inner and outer resources, we can create meaningful, lasting and joyful change.

By understanding and obtaining clarity, my clients master challenges in their relationships, alter habits, adjust to the transitions of life, cope with chronic illness, and more.

Opening Your Heart... To Yourself
Tired of Talk Therapy? Bored with Behaviorism? Sick of being Stuck? There are ways to end your discomfort. You can make friends with your pain, move through it and thrive, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes. With a wise and loving guide you can find your way through your life story and beyond it into health. You can release emotions that have been stuck in your body your whole life opening you to a peaceful place within, because you are already loved and forgiven. You can release your shame and befriend yourself. I would like to help. I've been a psychotherist for 40+ years; I'm skilled in many approaches, ancient and modern. I love what I do, and am told that I'm very good at it. Often, people are helped by me after other approaches failed, filled with pain, fear and sadness; even with histories of trauma. Freud said that a therapist cannot take her clients deeper than she herself has gone. I face my own issues, so as to be clear, compassionate and without judgement. This powerful work is grounded in reality... And it WORKS. Author of "Self-Care" Pub. Spring Hill Press
