Therapy Services for Couples, Individuals, and Families
We are a group of licensed clinical marriage and family therapists who are committed to providing high quality therapy services for couples, families, individuals and groups. We see many different types of client issues, including but not limited to couples communication, anxiety, depression, anger, family and stepfamily difficulties, and premarital preparation. I have been in full-time private practice for over 10 years. As marriage and family therapists, my staff and I are specially trained to deal with the context between and around clients, in addition to whatever might be going on for them individually. My personal commitment is to provide a safe and welcoming environment in which we can help move clients from where they are struggling and challenged to personal growth, happiness, and greater connection with the ones they love. My relationship with my clients not only includes helping them in the crisis moments, but also being available throughout life for whatever may come up - many return to therapy for "tune-ups" at different points in their lives. I'm honored to be someone they feel safe enough with to return at those times when they need someone to listen. If this sounds like something that might be of help to you, please give us a call at 301-563-9520, or email us at info@laurelfay.com. We look forward to working with you.

I am a private practicioner accepting most insurances as well as cash and credit cards.. I see adults, children, & adolescents for a variety of emotional and behavior issues. I utilize several modalities of treatment including Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Solution-Focused therapy, Play theapy, and Sandtray therapy. I mostly work with individuals but also work with their families. I work with all ages of patients who have lost a loved one recently or not so recently to work with them on the grief process. There are all ages of patients who are experiencing a mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder that I see to help them utilize skills to cope with and change their patterns of thoughts. Many ages of patients also experience anxiety that I assist in teaching them anxiety skills management. Many children and adolescents struggle with some sort of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and I work with them on strengthening their executive functioning skills like increasing attention and focus, decreasing impulsivity, etc. I also teach the parents skills to assist their child. Many of the children or adolescents I work with have an emotional or behavioral disorder. I am currently working on a play therapist certification. The above are just a few of the many issues I have worked with during the last 23 + years of experience. I have also worked with people who have eating disorders, relationship conflicts, job stress/issues, adults and children experiencing divorce issues, substance abuse, compulsive gambling, gender identity issues, selective mutism, sensory processing disorders, attachment issues, etc.

I am an active participant in each treatment and will work relationally with you to address your concerns. Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

Understand yourself better, become more free and fulfilled
My practice is trauma-focused, psychodynamic and relational
As your therapist, first and foremost I will respect the courage of your decision to seek therapy and create a foundation of safety, acceptance, and collaboration. I strongly believe that symptom reduction (e.g., anxiety, panic, constant worrying, depression, high stress levels, complex PTSD), and an exploration of the root causes of your most distressing problems are both vital aspects of a helpful therapeutic experience. I foster a therapeutic relationship that honors my clients’ conscious minds as well as feelings, symptoms, and behaviors that they may find confusing and painful, but may be clues to presenting problems. I also consider my clients' current life situations holistically, collaborating with them to explore physical, nutritional, general life style, social support, and self-regulation issues to find areas of resilience as well as those that could be strengthened. Presently, I work with late teens and adults of all ages. I work with clients who struggle with symptoms which may be the aftermath of loss, abuse or other difficult experiences, or are simply perplexed with why they repeat distressing patterns which cause them pain. My clients may enter therapy to explore "why they have such difficulty regulating their emotions", or, "why they continue to pursue relationships that are ultimately painful", or, "why it's so hard to feel anything"; they may also enter therapy to receive assistance with specific issues such as life transitions, relationship difficulties, and work or academic problems. I also specialize in the impact of past and current interpersonal trauma or loss on parenting capacities, and assist my clients when these experiences interfere with being loving and supportive parents in the present. My work blends relational psychotherapeutic approaches, trauma-focused assessment and treatment, and psychoeducation for both clients and their families where appropriate. My trauma studies, which included EMDRIA-approved advanced EMDR training, as well as principles of Internal Family Systems and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, have solidified my longstanding belief that therapy must often go beyond talk and attend to messages from our physical selves that may provide clues to where we are most "stuck". While I have been trained in several modalities and my approach is eclectic, I will meet you where you are presently to address the problems that are most distressing to you.

Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. If I will feel that I may not be the right fit, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who specialize in the issue you are seeking a solution for (i.e., pain management). We will also discuss fees. In our first session I will go over the inform consent and office policies with you and will collect data for the intake. I will become very involved with you and we will work as a team. I will ask you what your goals are and after a couple of sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will be in a very safe and supportive environment. I will learn to know who you are and what your personality is and I will adapt the therapeutic process to meet your individual needs. We will discuss your progress as we go along and make changes if the need arises. We will also discuss those changes to ensure that we are on the right direction in your path for personal growth.

Psychotherapy and Healing
Healing from a psychological problem may be the most difficult thing you do in your life. Like any physical illness, mental health issues can interrupt your entire existence; relationships, careers, education, and self esteem suffer. I am a practicing psychotherapist with a Masters degree from New York University. For the past fifteen years I have helped both adolescents and adults with a range of psychological problems. I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders, depression, and other mental health issues. My approach is eclectic, drawing from various proven theoretical approaches including psychodynamics, dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and relational psychotherapy. I believe that the relationship between the therapist and client is critical in moving through the healing process towards recovery and therefore make this a priority. I work with clients, their families, in addition to doctors, nutritionists, and other heath professionals to offer comprehensive care and lasting solutions. I also provide services to the friends and family members of people who suffer from psychological problems. My practice is conveniently located in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. I am currently accepting new clients.

NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS Neuropsychological evaluations are a crucial component in understanding the complex relationship between the brain and behavior. These comprehensive assessments delve into cognitive abilities, emotional functioning, and behavioral patterns to provide valuable insights into an individual’s neurological strengths and weaknesses. By examining various cognitive domains such as attention, memory, language, executive functions, and visual-spatial skills, neuropsychological evaluations offer a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s cognitive profile. This understanding is vital for accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and developing targeted interventions as well as serving as a baseline assessment, allowing for monitoring of cognitive changes over time. Ultimately, these evaluations play a pivotal role in optimizing outcomes, guiding interventions, and improving the overall quality of life for individuals facing neurological challenges. CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT The Center for NeuroWellness offers specialized concussion services dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of concussions. Thank you for considering me as a resource at this time in your life. I specialize in individual counseling, couples counseling, teen counseling, and marriage counseling. You may have found yourself at this site because you are looking for ways to improve your relationship or marriage, or you may be looking for ways to reconnect, or you might be considering making a change in your life. If anger, depression, or anxiety is impacting your life, you will gain insight and learn new and more productive ways to cope with and manage your emotions. Counseling can also help you with improving your communication and listening skills, improving your self-esteem, and boosting your self-confidence. During our work together you will discover and nurture your strengths, challenge your beliefs or behaviors that are no longer helpful, gain awareness and empowerment, and resolve experiences that could be causing you pain or are holding you back. In a comfortable, serene, and supportive atmosphere, I offer an individualized approach tailored to meet your specific needs to help you reach your full potential so you may experience the satisfying life you desire. If you are interested in pre-marital, marriage, or couples counseling, I utilize the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, which is based on the research by Dr. John Gottman that began in the 1970's and continues to this day. From this research, a method of therapy was created that emphasizes a "nuts-and-bolts" approach to improving your relationship. This method is designed to help teach specific tools to deepen friendship and intimacy in your relationship. To help you productively manage conflicts, you will be given methods to manage problems and gridlocked (or perpetual) issues. We will work together to help you appreciate your relationship's strengths and to gently navigate through its vulnerabilities.

I am a licensed marriage & family therapist, as well as a licensed clinical social worker. In my practice, I do family of origin, blended families, marriage & divorce/post divorce counseling. In addition, I work with children, adolescents, as well as adults suffering from depression, sexual/physical/ emotional abuse, anxiety, grief, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorder issues. I do specialty work with DID clients and conduct ADHD diagnostic assessments/counseling with ADHD adults/children. I believe empathy and a desire to allow people to identify their own treatment goals are keys to successful therapy results. To maximize the success of the client’s goals, I utilize an eclectic approach comprising a number of treatment modalities. I will often give my clients ‘assignments’ to complete before their next session thereby measuring progress. It takes courage and work to participate in the therapy process. My clients have reported results such as, “increased belief in self," "better communication with partner", "more productive,” "I understand my child more”, “I have new methods to cope".

I use humanistic-oriented counseling. In doing so, I ask these questions, among others: -Do you want to be open to new experiences? -Do you want to live each moment fully? -Do you want to trust your own judgment? -Do you want to exercise more freedom of choice? -Do you want to feel free to be more creative? -Do you want to balance your needs with everyone elses? -Do you want to live a rich, full life? In asking these questions, we can also address any issues relating to anxiety, depression, getting stuck in a rut, trauma, grief and any specific problems we have in being human. I hold a Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena, CA. I am currently registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences as a Marriage and Family Intern #57032, and practice psychotherapy under the supervision of Paul Chirumbolo, M.A., LMFT, Lic. #42253

Assisting Individuals Through Life's Transitions
I provide individual counseling, couples and family counseling and group counseling. I am also a supervisor for interns seeking licensure as Mental Health Counselors for the state of Florida. I prefer to use a brief, solution-focused model and utilize cognitive-behavioral techniques. I also enjoy incorporating art, music, poetry, journaling and play to enhance the therapeutic process. Knowing that each person is an individual, I use the most appropriate interventions and techniques for the situations and issues presented. I understand that the faster an issue is processed, the less impact the events will have on a person in the long-term. I understand that each person who seeks help wants to be heard and I am honored to provide that support.
