Life is often filled with challenges which affect each of us in different ways. I believe that how we approach and overcome those challenges, help to shape us and allow us to experience life to the fullest. I began my Marriage and Family Psychotherapy practice here in Glendora out of a desire to use my life experience, education, and passion to help serve the health needs of our community and the surrounding cities. Through my experience in a variety of settings, I have discovered that building a supportive relationship through therapy creates a safe place to explore life struggles, understand difficult issues, learn new skills, enrich relationships, and work through situations in order to lead a more authentic life. Creating a safe and supportive environment, where you can feel comfortable, is essential to my practice. In that setting, we can collaborate on how best to understand your situation, identify your goals, and find solutions. I bring a varied theoretical approach, centered on forms of therapy including psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral, brief/solution focused, and ensuring sensitivity to cultural diversity. My services include counseling individuals, families, couples and groups. • Eating Disorder Recovery and Body Image • Relationships • Anxiety • Depression • Premarital • Grief & Loss/ • Parenting • War Veterans and Family • Counseling for Men • Endometriosis, Interstitial Cystitis, Infertility • Older Adults • Group therapy: Ongoing Eating Disorder Recovery and Body Image Group

I see a variety of clients from ages 5 to 75. This includes people who have various life adjustment problems as well as those with personality and mood disorders. I treat children with play therapy for behavioral and other problems. Couples may require conjoint therapy for marital difficulties which may include other family members. And, of course, individual psychotherapy may be useful. I treat people who have suffered traumas caused by sexual, physical and emotional abuse which could result in depression, anxiety, social phobias, etc. I am able to assist people in overcoming self-defeating behavior which cause an inability to achieve goals in life. I use various types of therapy depending on the individual and types of problems he or she may be having. One very effective therapy technique is the utilization of inner voice dialogue with ways to conquer negative self-concepts. This may include bibleotherapy and worksheets depending on an individual's preference. Many first time patients are surprised to find that "talk therapy" can be so tension relieving. As a result, you may find yourself experiencing a lightening of moods and an enhanced sense of well-being. There's a great payoff in learning more about yourself.

Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist
As a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist I strive to adapt each session to the needs of each individual... their own specific needs and desired outcomes. Trained in many different modalities, e.g. Cognitive Behavior, Bowen, Jung, etc. , I draw from theorists that I feel will accomplish the task of what is needed for the individual or couple. It seems rare to me that use of only one theory is the only way to achieve results. I have been a Registered Nurse for over twenty years and feel that the medical knowledge I have achieved compliments the Psychological knowledge that I have gained through training and through my practice. Life experiences play such an important role in our dealing with others. To know and understand what others haved endured or are currently enduring is very empowering. I know what it feels like to experience problems with children, relationships, families, careers...and therefore can share with others the trials they are experiencing. The good thing is that with proper counseling, empathy and caring, things do work out...what ever the result are. Time and working through those areas that hinder our wel-lbeing with a counselor who will give guidance and support are important ways to overcome problems.

Life is a Journey, sometimes you need a Guide
Often psychotherapy is thought of as admitting failure - that you are unable to work out your own problems or just for crazy people. We are never taught the skills we need in relationships, how to process feelings about past events or make changes in our lives that will get us beyond a frustrating situation. Life and psychotherapy are processes. I feel that therapy is a process through which healing occurs and we discover meaning and purpose through which we become who we potentially are. There is no one right answer, there is only your answer that therapy can help you to discover. As a therapist I believe that deep inside every being is an innate wise core Self that can help one reach our potential. But often we are too distracted by our external environment to hear the voice of the Self or the Soul. In therapy it is important to address the whole person. I look for the potential in each person and help him or her to see it in as a beacon toward which to grow. Changing behavior is important, but I believe that change comes from the inside out. We need to believe in ourselves, our potential and find meaning and purpose in life that motivates us toward greater awareness, greater participation in life and greater appreciation of the opportunity life offers us for growth and fulfillment. I feel it is important to integrate spiritual beliefs into everyday life so that we act in relationships in a way that is consistent with what we believe and that we live our lives by the philosophy of our souls. This is important to our happiness and health and when we nurture our souls we contribute to the well being of family, friends, the workplace, society and our planet. Trauma, abuse and violence where trust and safety have been violated affect one’s ability to have and sustain relationships that are satisfying and nurturing. I work with victims of crime and abuse that is physical, sexual, verbal and emotional. This includes trauma recovery and healing. I also work with serious illness, death and dying and grief and bereavement. I work with all ages and address relationship problems within families, couples and groups in therapy. I have specialized experience, knowledge and training in “Spiritual Emergence / Emergency” in its many forms. I have a Transpersonal theoretical orientation, and work with creativity, intuition and spiritual experiences. I have training and knowledge in hypnosis, spirituality, parapsychology, consciousness, dreams, meditation, relaxation and visualization and Psychoneuroimmunology.

Compassionate CLIENT Centered Therapy-
Focus Is On the CLIENT Not the PROBLEM-
I was first trained as a behaviorist and client centered therapist and moved to a psychoanalytic approach in graduate school. I have since been exposed to many approaches of mental health treatment and theory. from Freud and Jung to New Age and Eastern Philosophies, I have developed my own sense of a Humanistic approach based on the premise that caring for the client is foremost in the treatment process. I have learned the healing relationship between therapist and client is more important then the theory or model that is being practiced, and it is also very important for the type of treatment being practiced to be consistent with the needs of the client. In other words, I don't make my client fit into my treatment approach but create an approach to meet the needs of my client. I truly believe in total acceptance and recognize that the patient has the power and responsibility to make changes required to solve problems and live a happier and contented life. I also believe that the unconscious is a powerful influence on everyone's perception of who they are and how the world responds to them. Self-discovery is part of the process, as is learning cognitive behavioral tools to resolve irrational beliefs and coping with emotions. I believe that unconscious thoughts, as well as negative or irrational beliefs play a dominate role in in the problems we face in our lives. Therapy will focus on getting in touch with one's true self and gaining a rational understanding of the motivations behind one's unhealthy behaviors and beliefs. with this understanding one begins to accept life situations for what they really mean. The process therefore develops an acceptance of the problem, increases motivation for change and instills a powerful belief and awareness that one can actually have the power to make the necessary changes that are required to solve the problems, which brought them into therapy. I have learned that the most significant factor in successful treatment of an individual is to focus on the individual and not on the problem. As I have taught my students and interns " If you focus on the problem you lose sight of the individual". No matter what problem the client brings into the therapy, the solution will be unique to the individuals experiences, skills and personal development. We have to treat the individual not the problem.

Are you hurting and feeling alone, with painful or damaged relationships due to trauma you (or your children) have endured? Do you wonder if life can ever be different or if there is hope for you? YOU ARE NOT ALONE. THERE IS HOPE. Welcome to Tamar Counseling Sevices. I specialize in helping you resolve traumatic and painful experiences from a trauma-informed lens, within a neurobiological and attachment framework. I am certified and experienced in EMDR, an empirically validated treatment approach with the highest success rate in treatment of trauma. I am also trained in and provide Brainspotting, another sub-cortical trauma treatment approach that emerged from EMDR. I am a certified yoga teacher with specialized training in Trauma Sensitive Yoga, an evidence-based somatic treatment which helps to ground and empower survivors of chronic abuse. The approach we take with your treatment will be tailored to your specific needs, strengths, interest, and comfort through collaborative discussion and as you feel ready. It is my passion to help others grow from victim to victorious survivor, helping you to resolve dissonance between your beliefs and your experiences, facilitate harmony between thoughts and emotions, and create empowerment by strengthening internal and external supports. I have walked this road, and I have helped many others navigate successfully and safely down this seemingly unsurpassable road, too. Healing is possible. Freedom awaits at the other side.

Support For Your Healing Journey
Find a Place Where You Can Improve Relationships
As a psychotherapist serving Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach and Newport Coast I work with couples and individuals who are experiencing relationship problems, depression, anxiety, grief, effects of trauma, and marital issues. Change does not occur easily and yet I continue to be inspired each day by the courage and motivation of the people I work with to challenge patterns that repeatedly cause heartache and turmoil, the effects of trauma from the past, and the problematic issues of daily living. No matter what the issue is, the most important aspect of therapy is developing a comfortable and trusting relationship with your therapist. I work in a way that provides that for each of my patients. So, If you're tired of the way your life is going, or if there are certain aspects that you know need some attention, I'd like to talk with you to see how I may be able to support you through your therapeutic process. I am caring, understanding and easy to talk to, and I provide a safe, comfortable place for you. I specialize in helping people live more fulfilling lives in their family, relationships and worklife. I also help people with increasing their confidence, as well as working through the effects of trauma, and issues from the past.

*I accept insurance and am a provider for: Cigna, Aetna, Value Options, Magellan, MHN, CHIPA and more. Psychology is my true calling, my gift, and my passion. I do not believe in labels of dysfunction. I see the potential for true "health" in every individual. I am Dr. Susan Murphy, PsyD, my daughter (Ally Tracy) and I, both USC grads, have joined forces as a dynamic mother/daughter duo, combining over 15 years of Psychology and Holistic practice experiences, to provide integrated counseling in the Palm Springs area. We offer individual, family and group counseling for a wide variety of your concerns and issues. We also give talks and workshops on many mental health issues . I also founded a Drink Moderation program called Motivational Recovery. This 6 week program, based on a Harvard research study, and practiced in Europe and Canada for dozens of years, allows the problem drinker the choice of learning to drink moderately or choose abstinence. I am a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. I find hypnosis a wonderful adjunct to quickly uncover, explore, and heal issues from past childhood trauma and experiences, present fears, and future anxieties. These issues or patterns, once helping us survive childhood, can now be making our lives unmanageable. Releasing past negative issues, whether through traditional therapy, or hypnosis, can help us reclaim our sense of trust and our ability for intimacy and sexuality without fear and guilt. I also specialize in counseling for sexual addictions. Many perceived sexual "addictions" are not really "addictions", but a result of our not being able to really connect with anybody. One way to tell if you are engaged in healthy or unhealthy sexual activity is how out of control you feel and are you causing others and yourself pain. Ally Tracy has a unique gift as an intuitive counselor, specializing in the creative and healing arts-such as, Chakra Energy Balancing, Meditative Practices, Creative Art Therapy, Life Coaching and Self-esteem building. Ally is a published freelance writer and studied and taught drama in New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. There is no magic cure or door; the answers are inside of you and we can help you uncover and implement them for a better life. The life you deserve.

Therapy for Individuals, Couples and Families
I believe therapy should be accessible. I love to work with the LGBTQI community and with the wide array of issues unique to them. I also try to help people find a way out of religious scrupulosity and the depression and anxiety it brings. Another passion or mine is helping people control their anger before it takes control of them. I work with a wide variety of emotional and behavioral issues and seek to provide a space for growth and insight. It is essential that you have a good fit with a therapist. If you think I might be right for you I will offer you a free face-to-face consultation for you to get a feel for how we might work together.
