Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

Therapy for Artists and Introverts
Overcome Depression, Improve Your Relationships
I provide a space free of distractions in order to focus clearly and deeply on the issues that are bringing you to therapy. Some people are seeking resolution to a specific problem, such as difficulty in love, past trauma, conflict with parents or crippling feelings of sadness and guilt. Others come to therapy to uncover their truest selves--to create purpose and meaning, to strive for the most satisfying life possible. I help people to increase their sense of power, agency and control while decreasing feelings of anxiety, self-hatred, guilt or shame. Most of the people with whom I work are interested in improving the quality of relationships in their lives. I have helped many people who initially came to therapy with thoughts about suicide along with intense feelings of sadness, anxiety and guilt. I also frequently work with people who have experienced abuse. I offer daytime and evening hours in two office locations. Both my Hayes Valley Office and my office in the Inner Sunset are convenient to public transportation and have easy daytime street parking. If you have questions, please ask! I look forward to hearing from you.

Relationship-Focused Counseling
For Individuals and Couples
I specialize in relationship focused counseling for individuals and couples. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I currently practice in the Inner Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco. My practice is pretty evenly divided between individual and couples counseling. I love to help people workout how to love and feel securely bonded. I am constantly training and working on my skills and psychotherapeutic approach. I am not one to rest on my laurels. In particular, I love being a couples counselor. I often find it is the perfect space, not only to work on improving relationship, but also to explore one’s individual “stuff” in the process. I strive to show up with as much access to my own wounded parts as I do my healer parts when I sit with clients. That way you get to sit with a fellow traveler on the journey of life. If you want an old school blank slate therapist, tis not me you need to call. Relationship is what ultimately heals. So our first step together is to establish a relationship and alliance. Psychotherapy is truly a vocation for me and I am happy to share my passion and down to earth approach with you.

I hope to help you explore whatever issues bring you to therapy in a safe, healing, supportive and effective manner. My approach to therapy is client-centered and collaborative. Each person is the expert in his or her life. My role is to assist you by teaching new skills, pointing out and reinforcing existing coping strategies, providing supportive feedback and exploring and helping resolve issues that cause you stress and suffering. I am skilled at helping you create clear goals and develop a plan for how to reach those goals. I am also flexible and supportive if exploration is more appropriate to help you get what you seek from therapy. My style is warm and interactive and incorporates humor. In addition to working with adults and teenagers individually, I enjoy working with couples and families. Much of my work with couples and families is focused on improving communication and problem solving skills. One of the essential goals is helping you be on the same team with one another, and to see difference less as an obstacle and more as a strength with opportunities for growth. I specialize in working with people who are: managing career and life transitions wanting to create lasting change with couples/relationship counseling looking to change their relationship with drugs and alcohol overcoming traumatic life experiences with EMDR adolescents and their families, and gay men and lesbians Please feel free to contact me for further information.

When approached with integrity, compassion, curiosity and care, PSYCHOTHERAPY can be profoundly reparative and life-altering. It can help you traverse times of uncertainty, discover what most nourishes and sustains your well-being and broaden and deepen your experience of yourself, your life and relationships with others. It can also help recover from the aftermaths of trauma, abuse and neglect, cope with psychological vulnerabilities, disability or illness, develop more self-esteem and confidence and meet the challenges of living with as much ease as possible. If you are seeking a warm, engaging and collaborative therapist, and wish to learn more about my work as a Marriage Family Therapist (MFT), please consider calling me. I have been assisting teenagers, adults, couples and families in their search more joyful and fulfilled lives since 1997, and would be delighted to speak with you to explore how I could potentially help you, whatever your needs or goals.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
I am an independent practitioner in Alameda, CA. My specialties are marriage counseling, individual counseling, and facilitating "Dream Appreciation Groups". In individual and marriage counseling, we address the stumbling blocks affecting your current life circumstances. Our sessions are client-centered, lively conversations. During the first and second sessions, we usually talk about what you'd like to accomplish in your therapy, as well as historical information that will help paint a full picture of your life journey to the present time. Of course if you are in crisis, we will concentrate on this situation first, and then we will tackle the less critical, but just as important, reasons for your decision to enter therapy. My approach is humanistic in that your sessions are individually tailored to You, the only person(s) like you on earth. I've found that EMDR, a therapeutic approach, has been extremely effective for alleviating painful struggles (including for trauma, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse) more quickly than traditional or psychodynamic methods—but, once again, you will be able to decide how you want your sessions to move forward. I also do non-psychotherapy dream groups for people who would like to explore their dreams in a confidential and safe social environment. Although the groups are not psychotherapy, they are usually very therapeutic—people participating in these groups have experienced growth on many levels, that is, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. If you believe that you would feel comfortable in any of these settings (individual, marital, or group), I would be glad to meet with you so that we can see whether we're a good fit together. I hope to hear from you soon!

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Depression
Mood, and Relationship Difficulties
John Montopoli, LMFT, is a licensed psychotherapist and certified cognitive therapist specializing in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for the treatment of Anxiety Disorders located in the Noe Valley area of San Francisco. He also provides services as an associate of Palo Alto Therapy on Sherman Avenue in Palo Alto. John is dedicated to providing high-quality therapy to adults struggling with Social Anxiety Disorder (extreme shyness), Phobias, Health Anxiety, Panic Disorders, Generalized Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Depression. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a practical form of psychotherapy that has been shown in numerous research studies to be effective in treating anxiety and mood disorders. The therapist helps clients overcome symptoms and improve overall functioning by developing skills to cope with the thoughts and behaviors that maintain their problems. Compared to other forms of psychotherapy, CBT tends to be goal-oriented, present-focused, and collaborative. Typically, the client and therapist collaborate on forming specific goals to be addressed in the therapy. Given its focus on symptom reduction and goal achievement, it tends to be a shorter term form of psychotherapy.

Holistic therapy can help You
Life’s unfolding path can be difficult and painful, but you don’t have to walk that path alone. The challenges and struggles we face in life can leave us feeling helpless and hopeless. Perhaps you’re overwhelmed with responsibilities. You might be taking care of other people and neglecting yourself. Or you might be struggling hard to make an important relationship work. I help people to listen to and understand themselves in order to have more satisfying relationships with others and to increase their ability to feel good and to do well at work and in school. I see clients of all ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, genders and income levels. I work with individuals, families, and couples, and sometimes run groups. Adults usually come to see me due to high stress, anxiety and depression related to work, finances, family interactions or relationship challenges. What we do in therapy depends on a person's needs and stated goals. Generally we combine discussion, relaxation and mindfulness, practicing communication skills, and creating art. Clients appreciate my careful and compassionate listening, my expertise, and my laughter and sense of humor. I work with many teens who are coping with pressures of peers, family and school. I support them to stay safe while exploring who they are and who they want to be. Teens often are relieved that creating art allows them to express themselves without having to explain themselves. With younger children, I combine art, talk and play to help them learn to identify and express their feelings in appropriate ways. Kids might come to therapy because of difficult behavior, problems in school, or family conflicts. I have provided mental health services in a variety of school settings, and am able to support parents struggling with children’s behaviors and school performance issues. I have special expertise in trauma treatment, and the ways that trauma can manifest as mood disturbance, anxiety, hyperactivity, addictive/compulsive behaviors, and dysfunctional relationships. My clients express that they experience significant symptom reduction, improved mood, decreased anxiety, and more peaceful relationships at home and at work as a result of therapy. Typically, even after the first session, clients leave my office stating that they feel better and more able to cope. Sometimes I work with people over many months, and sometimes just for a few sessions. I frequently offer suggestions of art projects to help people express themselves and explore their current situation. Some clients come to me specifically for art therapy. Others are referred through employee assistance programs or other sources. The most common reaction is that making art is relaxing, fun, and very useful. People are often concerned that they "don't know how to draw." No art experience is necessary - art therapy is about using the creative process to help us get a different perspective on our problems and visualize solutions. My office is wheelchair accessible, with easy parking. It is a clean, comfortable, relaxing and spacious room, with separate entrance and exit for increased privacy. I love what I do! I hope that I might have an opportunity to support you as well. Please email or call me if you would like further information, or if you have any questions.

Today You Can Start to Heal Your Relationships
- and You Don't Have to Do It All Alone.
Feeling stuck? I will be work with you to help you feel better and find ways to reach your goals. I will listen carefully in order to understand as much as possible about what you are going through. I will ask questions when needed and giving sensitive feedback to you in a timely manner. Shortly after you begin therapy you and others may begin to notice positive changes in yourself. As you begin to make better decisions for yourself, you will find that the problems that first brought you to therapy, such as feelings of depression, anxiety, codependency, or anger will have less power to affect you. You may feel more confident, and may experience improvement in relationships with your friends, loved ones and in your career. My clients often tell me that therapy helps them to become more reflective and in control of their lives, and that they are becoming more capable of attracting the kinds of people and situations they want. This is because therapy helps one to discover strengths that were previously unknown, or if known, not being used effectively. Therapy can be an amazing tool for personal transformation. If we work together, I will remain involved in your progress throughout the course of your treatment. I will support you as you pursue the challenging, rewarding path of positive, lasting change. Whether you opt for short or long term work, therapy is an investment in yourself that lasts a lifetime.

Reconnecting couples through counseling
Dealing with Anger? Communication? Affair? Sex life issues?
Motivated couples come here to work on their trust building, whether due to infidelity, or desire to come closer and more in sync. Learn how to work on your relationship here in counseling by helping build communication skills as well as thrive in your sexual life. Affair When it feels unimaginable to ever recover from dealing with infidelity in your relationship, with all the worries that consume you about an affair, you wonder if you can ever trust again. I help couples learn how to take responsibility and move forward in their relationships. Call to schedule an appointment and to learn the tools to rebuild your connection and love. Arguing When you are tired of having the same old, exhausting argument, I help you learn how to speak and be heard, understood and feel respected again. Call to learn positive communication skills and some couples therapy exercises. Sex life When you have lost hope that you will ever feel satisfaction in your body again and worry takes over that your relationship is doomed to be without sex, I can help you learn how to ignite the spark again and get back to enjoying the perks of being a couple. Call to schedule an appointment and to learn the tools to a healthy marriage and how to rebuild physical intimacy and emotional intimacy. Trust Building & Communication Therapy with your mate can provide you with new perspectives and positive options. Powerful strategies and tools are needed to break old patterns and overcome the challenges. It is true that most adults enter into relationships today without having had the right tools to eventually be successful. This explains the rate of divorce and discontent. Couples therapy gives you the knowledge to learn how to speak, how to be heard, touched, adored, and grow old together. These tools are priceless for your lives whether you are fielding a current conflict or want to come in for preventive measures to insure a connected union. Ever feel like your spouse responds the same way not matter what the situation? Can you predict the outcome of your arguments? Does your experience of talking include being heard? Most of the time there is a stale stagnant pattern, and “old shoe” mentality around how we communicate with our loved one. You CAN however have a relationship filled with fresh alive conversation, the satisfying feeling of being heard, and understood and (although not always agreed with) still respected! Still respected inside of a disagreement? YES! Mature enough to move on and operate in love with different opinions?! YES! Even if trust has been broken, if there has been an infidelity, if someone cheated, if your boyfriend lied, if your girlfriend is sneaking around having an emotional affair or if you just bring a general untrustworthiness with you from childhood traumas...whatever the case may be, trust can be rebuilt if desired. It is a process. It is not however, one we know how to do immediately. Re building trust is not an instinctual thing. We want to protect ourselves and build a wall, and that is smart until it no longer serves us and we want to let love back in. For the one who broke the trust, learning how to validate your partner and accept responsibility is paramount. You can find out new ways to get your needs met without breaking trust, finding your voice, and identifying things or behaviors that trigger you. Trust building is a two way street for couples. Trust building is an art. That is where therapy comes in. You don’t have to know how to do this on your own, you are not supposed to, I’m here to help.

Are You Ready to Create Positive Lasting Change?
Change Is Not Merely Necessary to Life - It Is Life. Toffler
I primarily provide for the counseling needs of professionals at all levels, and offer intelligent, insightful, creative, outside-the-box, solution-focused and long-term therapy with complete discretion and confidentiality. My work focuses on helping clients enjoy more satisfying and meaningful lives. Issues I commonly help people resolve include life and career transitions, anxiety and depression, feelings of emptiness, stress management, as well as many others. Former and current clients have described me as "easy to talk to," "a wonderful listener," "someone who it feels safe to talk with," "easy to be open with, and nonjudgmental," "empathic and understanding," and most commonly of all "someone who thinks outside the box." Most of my career counseling relationships last at least a few months, but it is usually helpful to stay in regular contact with your career counselor or coach even after your objectives are determined and any mental obstacles preventing the achievement of your goals are removed. As we move along our paths in life, we often have to deal with unanticipated challenges, and correct our courses accordingly. Having someone around to keep us on track as we face those challenges is an immense asset. My clients determine where they would like to be more aligned with their life purpose, and ultimately learn to craft the solutions to any problems facing them. But several decades of experience have led me to understand that helping clients with "career issues" requires me to address and manage a wide variety of career-related issues. Because of this, I have also helped numerous clients: Create a satisfying balance between work and the rest of life; Stay focused on work while dealing with emotional issues (such as grief, divorce, or difficulties with children); Find time and outlets for other needs (such as community involvement, creativity, spirituality); Resolve conflicts and issues in the workplace; Learn the communication and conflict management skills necessary for employees and supervisors; Relieve work-induced tension and stress; Manage job changes and changing work environments; Decide whether to stay in a job or find a new one; Deal with workplace disabilities; Make decisions regarding self-employment and entrepreneurship; and Address the numerous financial issues and concerns that arise around these topics. If you feel you could use a professional partner to address any of the aforementioned issues... If you have questions about the nature of the work you do, how it impacts your life, and how you can successfully transition your career so it becomes an expression of your life purpose contact me. As Robert Frost said, "(for only when) work is play for mortal stakes is the deed ever really done for heaven and the future's sakes."

Adults Abused as Children Chronic, Severe and Terminal Illness Trauma, Loss and Grief Research indicates a powerful relationship between our emotional experiences as children and our physical and mental health as adults, as well as the major causes of adult mortality. It documents the conversion of traumatic emotional experiences into organic disease later in life. Adult survivors of childhood maltreatment who appear to be healthy are twice as likely to show clinically relevant levels of inflammation known to predict the development of conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.[King’s College Study led by Dr. Andrea Danese in London.]
