Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. I practice Affect Regulation Therapy which is effective for anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, etc. My special niche is Addiction; i do prevention, intervention, and maintenance. The most successful forms of therapy are those that stress the relationship between the therapist and client. As a scholar of brain development (under the tutelage of Dr. Allan Schore), I have learned that an attuned relationship between therapist and client can actually change the brain; that is, it can create more connections between the synapses, thus improving the mental health of the individual. I do both long-term and short-term psychotherapy and I get spectacular results~~

"Knowing Yourself Is the Beginning of All Wisdom"- Aristotle
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #80907 specializing in providing psychotherapy, counseling, and mental health services for adolescents, teens, individuals, couples, and families. I provide services at my private-practice offices in both Torrance and Long Beach. I have over 10 years of experience working in the social service and mental health fields with a wide variety of issues, populations, and cultures. I have presented clinical and academic work both locally and internationaly, have taught psychology and philosophy at various colleges, and am currently teaching psychology at Long Beach City College. Taking that first step toward getting help or seeking a greater knowledge of Self can be the hardest part and I understand that. I have faced many obstacles in my journey through life, and am grateful to now be in a position to help others. I focus on providing a safe environment in order to help you speak freely, share your story, ask difficult questions, and face challenging issues in a confidential exchange. In beginning this inquiry, today you are one step closer to finding answers. Sometimes circumstances befall us in our journey through life that can leave us feeling lost or confused with various questions. These are some of the ways in which those questions surface: Is something holding you back in life? Is something getting you down that you feel you can’t share with anyone? Do you question why you made certain choices in life? Are you struggling in your relationships? Are you at a crossroads in life? Do you question the meaning of life? Do you crave a better knowledge of Self? Does your past have too much influence and control on your present? Are you seeking personal and relational development? Do you want to attain a new way of seeing your self so you can create a new way of being? If you have questions like these or similar ones, therapy and counseling may be able to help. In begining this search and inquiry for yourself, today you are one step closer to expressing yourself and answering questions so that you can feel a stronger sense of Self-empowerment on a positive path to growth and well-being. As a depth psychotherapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating and affirming everyday. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand how they effect you in the present in order to resolve challenges in your life and create a new way of being. By utilizing a variety of therapy approaches and techniques chosen to both suit who you are a person and address the issues you bring forth, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. I have also studied philosophy at the University of Liverpool in England, and am open to discussing any of life's difficult questions, spirituality issues, and existential themes that may be running through your mind. If you're looking for extra support and guidance through a challenging situation or you're just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals. I have had experience treating people of all ages and walks of life. The one thing I have found that ties each of us together is the innate desire to progress and better ourselves. In life there will be specific circumstances, life transitions, relationship dynamics and/or traumas that may require us to seek out support and understanding. I have dedicated my professional career in trying to do just that for my clients and their families. Therapy can be an intimidating venture, therefor I have built my profession in creating an environment that makes my clients feel comfortable and safe. I use an eclectic approach in deciding techniques and/or therapy styles to utilize in session. I have learned that therapy has to be as unique as the individuals/couples/families I treat.

Psychotherapist
I’m a trained psychotherapist with 15+ years experience working with adults and adolescents. I specialize in treating trauma, anxiety, OCD, depression, self-sabotaging behaviors, and relationship problems. I integrate various treatment approaches and theories in my work with clients, including somatic experiencing, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, attachment theory, spirituality, and buddhist meditation. I work in an empathic and supportive environment, helping clients to rapidly get to the core issues which keep them stuck in their lives, unhappy in relationships, or chronically depressed, angry, or anxious. Almost always, what creates suffering is the avoidance of painful feelings and/or experiences. When we avoid these painful feelings, we become more anxious, more depressed, or more angry. This leads to a vicious cycle of problems within ourselves (i.e, depression) or in relationships, which cause us even more suffering. By bringing to the surface the deep and buried, often complex, underlying thoughts, emotions, and experiences and working them through (feeling them in the body, understanding their source), this frees them up. And the unwanted feelings (anxiety, depression) or behavior melt away on their own. This then allows us to be more connected to both ourselves and others, to have more intimacy in our relationships and to feel more fulfilled in general. Using this approach, significant and lasting change can happen rather quickly, much quicker than most other therapies out there. And because these changes occur at a deep level, they tend to be lasting.

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
For those who have felt unseen by past therapist
Life can feel overwhelming, confusing, and, at times, impossible. You may know exactly what your problems are and yet you can’t seem to find a way to overcome them. You may feel as though your map was never given or was lost somewhere along the way. Sometimes existential problems weigh you down and sometimes its life’s minutiae. Trauma may have led you to feel cut off from yourself or the world around you. Life seems to happen to you but you don’t feel like a participant. Your innate creativity may feel stunted by your past and environment. I understand how these challenges can feel all-consuming and isolating. You don't have to navigate them alone. My practice focuses on supporting individuals as they manage the emotional and psychological challenges prevalent in today's society: anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship issues, compulsive behavior, grief/loss, and trauma. I will treat you with the deep reverence, attention, curiosity, and care you deserve. My approach is primarily psychodynamic and psychoanalytic, meaning that I work with parts of the mind that may be elusive and whose influence may be undetected. My goal is for you to connect with your most authentic self, tap into your inner resources, and cultivate meaningful relationships with yourself, others, and life itself. I became a therapist after years of working in neuroscience and psychiatric settings throughout NYC and Southern California. I use my untraditional experience to supplement my understanding of the mind. Good therapy isn't always easy, but the rewards are lasting. Let's go through the trenches together.

Get Un-Stuck and Get Your Life Back on Track! Life Is Short.
Stop Defeating Yourself & "Find Out What Is Right with You!"
Hello, my name is Dr. Steve Harris. I will work compassionately with you to help you find your way towards more fulfilling relationships and a satisfying life. I work with a broad variety of people who are trying to get un-stuck from areas in their lives that have become counterproductive ways of coping. People frequently arrive at my office after reading self-help books, working hard to develop successful and healthy habits, exercising, changing their appetite and/or diet, taking medication (or refusing to), but find that these changes did not reach something deeper inside that seems to get in the way. They are usually smart people who know what to do, but in the “heat of the moment” all of the seemingly good tools, learning, and insights “go out the window” and an emotional reaction that sabotages the potential for success often intervenes. Whether it is to be able to have a satisfying relationship, overcome intense anxiety, break out of a deep depression, recover from a traumatic experience, overcome an addiction, or other life problem, numerous people come to me to remove the barriers in their lives so they can live more freely and get back on track of healthy living. It is important for me to help people uncover what is right with them, not just focus exclusively on their problems. I am a clinical psychologist in private practice in Orange County for over 20 years. I would like to have the opportunity to explore further what might be done to help. Please call me today to schedule a Free initial consultation. Don’t delay getting on with your life any longer!

If you suffer from addiction of any kind, not just drugs and alcohol, all the techniques above will be used to help you identify alternative ways of thinking and behaving to 1) stop addictive behavior and 2) find healthy lifestyle alternatives.

Enhance Your Awareness & Connection
Are you having more intense feelings lately? Tired of trying so hard? Have you lost your creative edge and become too resigned to routine? Life changes. . . even something positive such as a new marriage, child or job can create unfamiliar situations and energies. Anxiety, confusion, irritability or emptiness are signs that its time to check in with yourself. Therapy is often about creating time each week to reflect, question, and evaluate what's going on for you. Many highly sensitive, gifted and talented people have come to pursue what is next with their self understanding and relationship to others. Executives, designers, educators, artists, entrepreneurs, innovators, helping professionals and others have returned over the years to develop further awareness and skills from as far away as Santa Monica, Rancho Palos Verdes, Westlake, La Verne and Downtown LA. Video counseling is available for residents of California (except for psychotherapy). Real-life issues can crop up for those who have emigrated, immigrated, or re-entered the US (within in the last two generations). I have first-hand experience with all three situations and have worked successfully with diplomats, peace corps workers, missionaries and expatriates.

Counseling for Individuals, Children, and Adolescents
Are you looking to make a positive change in your life but not quite sure what or how? Are there transitions in your life and you are unsure of how to cope with them? Do you have children and adolescents that you are finding hard to relate to? Do you feel stressed because of everything life throws at you? As your clinician, I want to work together to find a solution to these challenges. As humans, we should not have to deal with daily stress as a part of our lives and we shouldn’t have to figure it out all on our own. I specialize in working with children and adolescents. These two age populations are crucial in human development. During these stages of life, children experience many confusing emotions that relate to self identity, peer relationships, family relationships, life transitions and school. Working with children that range from 2-18 years old has allowed me to develop my knowledge with this delicate population. Working with children and adolescents, I have been trained to use different theoretical approaches, that which includes systemic, cognitive behavioral, postmodern, and humanistic. I also have experience working in the school setting providing counseling support and working within special education. My role is to provide support not only to the child, but also to the parents and family.

Restoring Wholeness and Dignity
EMDR, Brainspotting, and Trauma Informed Therapy
Are you hurting and feeling alone, with painful or damaged relationships due to trauma you (or your children) have endured? Do you wonder if life can ever be different or if there is hope for you? YOU ARE NOT ALONE. THERE IS HOPE. Welcome to Tamar Counseling Sevices. I specialize in helping you resolve traumatic and painful experiences from a trauma-informed lens, within a neurobiological and attachment framework. I am certified and experienced in EMDR, an empirically validated treatment approach with the highest success rate in treatment of trauma. I am also trained in and provide Brainspotting, another sub-cortical trauma treatment approach that emerged from EMDR. I am a certified yoga teacher with specialized training in Trauma Sensitive Yoga, an evidence-based somatic treatment which helps to ground and empower survivors of chronic abuse. The approach we take with your treatment will be tailored to your specific needs, strengths, interest, and comfort through collaborative discussion and as you feel ready. It is my passion to help others grow from victim to victorious survivor, helping you to resolve dissonance between your beliefs and your experiences, facilitate harmony between thoughts and emotions, and create empowerment by strengthening internal and external supports. I have walked this road, and I have helped many others navigate successfully and safely down this seemingly unsurpassable road, too. Healing is possible. Freedom awaits at the other side.

Support For Your Healing Journey
Find a Place Where You Can Improve Relationships
As a psychotherapist serving Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach and Newport Coast I work with couples and individuals who are experiencing relationship problems, depression, anxiety, grief, effects of trauma, and marital issues. Change does not occur easily and yet I continue to be inspired each day by the courage and motivation of the people I work with to challenge patterns that repeatedly cause heartache and turmoil, the effects of trauma from the past, and the problematic issues of daily living. No matter what the issue is, the most important aspect of therapy is developing a comfortable and trusting relationship with your therapist. I work in a way that provides that for each of my patients. So, If you're tired of the way your life is going, or if there are certain aspects that you know need some attention, I'd like to talk with you to see how I may be able to support you through your therapeutic process. I am caring, understanding and easy to talk to, and I provide a safe, comfortable place for you. I specialize in helping people live more fulfilling lives in their family, relationships and worklife. I also help people with increasing their confidence, as well as working through the effects of trauma, and issues from the past.
