ADDICTIONS and RELATIONSHIP SPECIALIST
HORSES and EXOTIC ANIMALS ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY
For over 25 years, I have specialized in addiction treatment, including alcohol, drugs, and eating disorders. When the substance is dealt with, self esteem increases and relationships can be repaired. I also work with couples who see no other option than to end or divorce. Through guiding each individual to understand what they are doing to continue to the breakdown of the relationship and to then repair the unhealthy dynamics, the relationship will have a chance to recover and flourish. I teach assertiveness and anger management, thereby increasing self confidence and good communication skills. Anxiety and depression are replaced by the ability to have a healthy and strong sense of self worth. I have developed a model for treating eating disorders that comes from what we know to be successful in treating other substance abuse problems. I also make HOUSE CALLS around the Bay Area providing counseling in the privacy of your own home. The counseling is practical and solution focused. I work with you to solve problems by providing a true understanding of the issues so that a plan can be made and a course of action developed. People like to know what the real problem is and how to make it better. I tell my clients that they will know fairly quickly into the therapy process that their lives will improve. The process will not be vague or open-ended. You will gain insight into what is really troubling and you will learn new skills and tools to feel better and become more clear and confident about what you need to do to resolve what is bothering you. As an EAGALA Certified Equine Mental Health Psychotherapist, I use my unique and friendly horses and other farm animals to assist with gaining self knowledge, psychological insight, and healing.

Repair and Restore Your Marriage
Has the spark gone out of your marriage? The spark of love and romance does not have to fade away. If your marriage is filled with conflict and emotional distance...if your partner seems more like just a friend than a romantic partner...couples counseling may help in restoring love and desire to your relationship. You're pretty sure marriage is not supposed to be like this... If you're like most people, you are probably thinking that something is wrong with your relationship. It shouldn't be this painful…there should not be so many fights. You should feel more loved and cherished by your partner. Have you ever wondered if it's possible to repair your marriage? Would you like to build a more deeply loving relationship with your partner? You can learn how to get your needs met, improve your marriage, enjoy better communication, experience your home as a sanctuary, and work together in parenting your children. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I help individuals, couples and families achieve a more satisfying life. Couples sometimes settle for being miserable. I recommend that you don't just settle - come in to counseling and learn the secrets to more happiness and fulfillment. When a relationship has become strained or distant and you are not feeling close to your partner, you may feel hopeless that things will ever change. I believe both you and your spouse want to feel understood and that your needs will be met and respected. I think both of you want a happy and loving environment that you come home to at the end of the day. When there is too much alienation or conflict, it may be time to see a therapist for couples counseling. Counseling may help improve empathy and understanding. It will help both of you talk to each other, and will help you listen to what is being said. Counseling can help you and your partner move beyond a pattern of conflict and return to love. Issues that come up in couples therapy may include anger management, sexual problems, money issues, past hurts that never got resolved, affairs, anxiety and depression issues, alcohol and substance issues, and relationship with family and in-laws.

If it's not one thing, it's your mother.
Learn to love yourself in all the ways she couldn't.
If you had a mom (or dad) who was critical, emotionally cold or distant, demanding or dismissive, you probably struggle with feeling not-good-enough. You might find you work way too hard to prove your worth. You might be overly responsible - to everyone but yourself. You might feel anxious about being judged or rejected. But no one judges you as harshly as your own inner critic. And that might be leaving you exhausted and depressed. Having a parent who can't convey that you mean everything to them, all the time, without ever having to earn love leaves us scrambling to earn love, respect and approval in every area of life - work, love, and friendship. It's terrible to feel we can lose respect, admiration and care if we make a wrong move. What's really true is this: You can't earn love (and don't have to) to feel valued. It is being loved without limits for no good reason that makes us feel secure in the knowledge that we are lovable. If you didn't get this kind of love as a kid, no worries. You can have it now. The key is learning how to give it to YOURSELF. My job is to teach you HOW. When you have your own love, everything else changes. It becomes easier to say no to situations and people who don't feel right for you. You feel empowered to set the boundaries you need. It becomes easier to ask for what you need without worrying about burdening others. You become your full, real self, discovering who really loves YOU (not what you do for them). If this sounds like you, please contact me to schedule a free consultation.

Anxiety Center Of Marin
Mental Health Counselor/Therapist
Kentfield, CA 94904
Offices In Kentfield And Petaluma
Dr. Martin specializes in the treatment of Anxiety and Fears: Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Medical Procedure Fears, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Work Stress, Marital Stress, Specific Phobias. Treatment emphasizes Exposure-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Treatment is active, collaborative, supportive, and custom tailored to each individual. The patient works at his or her own pace while actively learning to think and behave in ways that increase confidence. Successful therapy leads to reduced anxiety, depression, avoidance and impairment. Dr. Martin has offices in both Marin and Sonoma Counties. Problems Treated: PANIC DISORDER: Panic Disorder essentially means fear of panic attacks. Many people (perhaps one out of five) experience panic attacks, yet most are not frightened about them. They are very uncomfortable, but are usually understood not to be dangerous. Most people float with them while the adrenalin burns off and within a half an hour or so, feel recovered and may feel a little “off” for an hour or so afterwards (like they just ran an Olympic sprint). A panic attack is a sudden and severe onset of anxiety which may include, for example, heart racing, difficulty breathing, feelings of dread and needing to escape, light-headedness or dizziness. AGORAPHOBIA: In most instances, Agoraphobia refers to the experience of great emotional distress in, or avoidance of situations where one fears having a panic attack. In other words, it often accompanies Panic Disorder. Situations include shopping malls, church services, parties, restaurants, airplanes, bridges, freeways, doctors offices and even medical and dental procedures such as MRIs where the patient feels trapped and afraid of having a panic attack or in some cases a more limited symptom (not quite panic). Again, the underlying fear here would be either physical harm; social humiliation; or losing mental control and somehow not being able to get help. OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD may take a variety of forms. Six of these seem to account for most of OCD. Many sufferers experience more than one form and symptoms may change over time. GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER. These patients have frequent episodes of worry, often many times a day. They worry excessively about such things as paying bills, traffic accidents, illness, etc. Their anxiety goes up and down as the individual is confronted situationally or mentally with a worried thought. SPECIFIC PHOBIAS. These include for instance, fear of heights, flying, driving, public speaking, closed spaces, or animals. These individuals usually know their fears are exaggerated but like all anxiety disorders they continue to wonder “what if.” Thus, they either avoid situations or endure them with much distress. DEPRESSION. Unlike an anxiety disorder, clinical depression often affects mood in many situations which are not stressful in and of themselves. Getting easily frustrated over small things is a common symptom of Clinical Depression. Depressed mood, tearfulness, loss of interest in normally pleasurable activities, lowered feelings of self worth and suicidal feelings are common symptoms. Getting increasingly frustrated or irritable, having constant ruminative worry, difficulty concentrating or remembering things, problems sleeping or with appetite can all feel like symptoms of anxiety. But they are also common symptoms of clinical depression. SITUATIONAL STRESS. Marital problems, grief over loss of a friend, work conflicts, or financial uncertainty are all examples of situational stress. These stressors may be temporary, but can also be quite distressing and impairing and can lead to more serious problems over time such as an anxiety disorder or clinical depression.

Our orientation integrates John Bradshaw's nationally acclaimed teachings on the inner child, codependency, and toxic shame with a humanistic, transpersonal, and family systems perspective; is grounded in the 12-step approach to recovery; and draws on the expressive arts and somatic therapy. In addition to verbal forms of therapy, we utilize symbolic methods (dreamwork, art therapy, psychodrama, movement, and sandtray therapy) that gently yet dramatically create change by tapping directly into the unconscious. Our focus is to resolve the issues that bring you to counseling and to help you establish or reestablish your life as a thriving, nurturing process. The first step is to help you identify the goals you seek to accomplish. Then, using powerful yet gentle methods, our counseling acts to enliven and release the forces of positive growth already present within you. You fulfill your goals and grow beyond negative patterns from the past, empowered to move forward with freedom in your life.

7/25/2012 I came to see Debora when I was feeling over whelmed by the tasks of motherhood and as my role as wife, I needed some guidance with parenting. In one session I felt immediately better because Debora taught me ways handle my daily stress and how to work with my kids so that they would respond to me in a positive manner. We also saw Debora as a couple and my husband also felt the positive effects of one session with Debora, everyday we use tips Debora taught us to be a better husband and wife and also parents. I could not be happier with the results thus far. -Lafayette Mom 7/23/2012 Debora brought my family back into the warm sunshine after months of living in a cold and disconnected home. After feeling desperate watching my relationship with my young son spiral into a dark whole, she gave both us tools to help focus our daily interactions with each other so that we could once again grow together and learn to navigate our ever changing world of mother and son. My son enjoyed his time talking and playing with Debora and she always gave me a chance to review the previous week and hone my new skills during our weekly check-ins. For us, she is our safety net for the future should the need arise again. - mother of a seven year old son 7/18/2012 Debora's play-therapy practice is interactive, fun, and well loved by the children who receive services. We are more than pleased with her program, and are so happy to be working with her. Play-therapy, as opposed to talk therapy, uses play and active processes to help children express feelings and learn new behaviors. It's like they are going to play with a friend who helps, rather than going to a "therapist". We (as parents of a child ) couldn't be more pleased. R. Pleasant Hill, CA 3/27/2012 Upon adopting our son from foster care suffering from a lot of trauma, I started researching for a therapist with a lot of experience dealing with high-risk children and found Debora. Debora has been my family's therapist for two years now. Debora has been a lifesaver to me. I could not have made it through all the trials which come from adopting a child from foster care had it not been for Debora and her expertise. Debora is very professional and goes above and beyond what is expected. Debora is always there when needed providing her help and guidance. I cannot thank Debora enough. S. (Alamo, CA)

Are You Ready to Create Positive Lasting Change?
Change Is Not Merely Necessary to Life - It Is Life. Toffler
I primarily provide for the counseling needs of professionals at all levels, and offer intelligent, insightful, creative, outside-the-box, solution-focused and long-term therapy with complete discretion and confidentiality. My work focuses on helping clients enjoy more satisfying and meaningful lives. Issues I commonly help people resolve include life and career transitions, anxiety and depression, feelings of emptiness, stress management, as well as many others. Former and current clients have described me as "easy to talk to," "a wonderful listener," "someone who it feels safe to talk with," "easy to be open with, and nonjudgmental," "empathic and understanding," and most commonly of all "someone who thinks outside the box." Most of my career counseling relationships last at least a few months, but it is usually helpful to stay in regular contact with your career counselor or coach even after your objectives are determined and any mental obstacles preventing the achievement of your goals are removed. As we move along our paths in life, we often have to deal with unanticipated challenges, and correct our courses accordingly. Having someone around to keep us on track as we face those challenges is an immense asset. My clients determine where they would like to be more aligned with their life purpose, and ultimately learn to craft the solutions to any problems facing them. But several decades of experience have led me to understand that helping clients with "career issues" requires me to address and manage a wide variety of career-related issues. Because of this, I have also helped numerous clients: Create a satisfying balance between work and the rest of life; Stay focused on work while dealing with emotional issues (such as grief, divorce, or difficulties with children); Find time and outlets for other needs (such as community involvement, creativity, spirituality); Resolve conflicts and issues in the workplace; Learn the communication and conflict management skills necessary for employees and supervisors; Relieve work-induced tension and stress; Manage job changes and changing work environments; Decide whether to stay in a job or find a new one; Deal with workplace disabilities; Make decisions regarding self-employment and entrepreneurship; and Address the numerous financial issues and concerns that arise around these topics. If you feel you could use a professional partner to address any of the aforementioned issues... If you have questions about the nature of the work you do, how it impacts your life, and how you can successfully transition your career so it becomes an expression of your life purpose contact me. As Robert Frost said, "(for only when) work is play for mortal stakes is the deed ever really done for heaven and the future's sakes."
