Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes!
Taking the first step...
I believe in taking a holistic approach to counseling. Since most issues are interrelated, positive change in one area begins a ripple effect of change in others. My training and over 25 years of clinical experience is diverse, addressing issues related to relationship problems, anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma, grief and stress. In addition, I offer two women's groups and an individualized Anger Management Program. Since 1995, I have been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Human Relations at the University of Oklahoma. Courses taught include, Understanding Addictions, Stress Management, Chemical Dependency, Human Emotions and Advanced Counseling Skills. One of the most effective interventions I use is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, (EMDR). It is enormously successful in treating PTSD and is often used with complicated grief issues. EMDR came to Oklahoma in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, on April 19, 1995. This tragedy resulted in widespread trauma and grief, throughout the state. A team of volunteer EMDR therapists immediately flew into Oklahoma City and worked tirelessly for several months, providing this therapy to victims, survivors and rescue workers. I was fortunate to have been in the group of 300 licensed therapists who were trained to carry on their work. As a result, I became certified in EMDR and have incorporated it into my therapy practice. It has allowed my clients to more effectively cope with and resolve a wide variety of issues and problems affecting their quality of life. EMDR continues to be one of the fastest, most valuable resources for individual healing. I am a Licensed Marital & Family Therapist, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Master Addictions Counselor and a Certified EMDR Therapist. My practice utilizes cognitive-behavioral therapy, showing the connection between thoughts, feelings and behavior. I also offer assertiveness and stress management training, in addition to chemical dependency counseling and chemical dependency interventions.

Compassionate Care with Options for Treatment
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Unknown. “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” Anonymous Hi. I understand that when you're hurting, you need understanding and sensitivity. You might be struggling with a difficult psychological disorder or just need help untangling the complex web of life. Perhaps you are struggling with a difficult relationship, need to overcome a serious trauma, or want to surmount a weight or smoking problem through hypnosis. I am also certified to perform past life regression, which might afford you self enrichment or provide the key to understanding aspects of thoughts and feelings you have today. Therapy is not a “one size fits all” discipline and fitting treatment to my individual client's personality and needs is a hallmark of my practice. I am skilled in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing,), Hypnosis, Past Life Regression, Relationship Counseling, or regular talk therapy, and will apply whichever technique or techniques in our sessions that promise the greatest benefit to you. The following are some of the issues I work with: Depression, relationship issues, anxiety, chronic pain, divorce, gay/lesbian issues, grief, OCD, spirituality, trauma, dissociation, family and sexual problems. This is not an exhaustive list and I encourage you to write or call to discuss whatever has brought you to consider using my services.

Specializing in EMDR, SE, IFS, CT, Couples, & Group
I maintain a general private practice with a specialty in the treatment of trauma with offices in the Flatiron District of Manhattan and in Montclair, New Jersey. Whether you have experienced a major traumatic event, suffer from from acute or chronic anxiety and/or depression or whether you are feeling frustrated or stuck in repetitive patterns in your work or personal life, effective psychotherapy can help bring about empowerment, growth, and positive, lasting change. I am an active participant in each treatment and will work relationally with you to address your concerns. I also specialize in the use of more body-based modalities such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and SE (Somatic Experiencing). I have found, and current research is validating, how essential a healthy mind/body connection is to facilitating any real and lasting shifts from old habituated patterns to new, more adaptive ones, and I have found these modalities particularly effective in this regard.

Monterey Psychologist Providing Individual, Couples,
And Group Psychotherapy to Adults and Adolescents.
There are many reasons why you might be considering a Los Angeles psychologist at this time: a long-standing problem, the impact of a current life situation, and/or wanting support for your personal growth. Whatever your reasons, I know that it's important for you to find a therapist with whom you feel you can develop a good working relationship - someone whom you feel you can trust, who can understand your situation, someone with solid training and experience. In our work together we will come to understand more about the sense you may have that your life is not your own - feeling stuck, feeling driven by old habits, feeling depressed, feeling consumed and forestalled by rage, feeling that change is needed in your relationship or in your career. You and I will work together to build a trusting and non-judgmental relationship where you can feel safe to talk about yourself openly. The strength of our relationship is a crucial foundation for our work together. You know your life better than anyone else. Therefore, we will hold great respect for your wisdom about yourself. I will offer my professional knowledge and wisdom as well, and together, we will work to help you discover how to live the life that is best and most fitting for you. In individual therapy, I see my role as a guide and facilitator to help you discover the resources within to become an active agent of your own healing and growth. You'll develop new awareness about the patterns in your life that no longer serve you and new skills to transform those patterns. For couples, I'll help you lower reactivity and shift the dynamics that block intimacy and connectedness so that you can engage with each other with more authenticity and empathy.

Be proactive
Individual, Couple's and Group Counseling
I have worked with thousands of people in both personal and business environments. While I have been a licensed therapist for 26 years, I feel more aligned with calling myself a coach. My focus is on helping people become clear about their visions and desires, strategize about how to move forward effectively, and then take consistent action. I lead both personal development and business communication courses nationally and internationally. My wife of 25 years (Judith Bell, M.S.) and I co-wrote Lovers for Life: Creating Lasting Passion, Trust, and True Partnership. She and I co-lead couple's workshops. I also lead Strength with Heart men's groups and workshops. Weekly groups have been running continually for the last 26+ years. I am quite willing to share my perspective in respectful ways to clients who appreciate the directness and clarity of my feedback. Working with individuals, couples, and groups, I act as ally and advisor in helping you bring forth your very best. It is truly a privilege. I have offices in both San Francisco and Marin. I also work with people around the country through Skype or phone.

Compassionate CLIENT Centered Therapy-
Focus Is On the CLIENT Not the PROBLEM-
I was first trained as a behaviorist and client centered therapist and moved to a psychoanalytic approach in graduate school. I have since been exposed to many approaches of mental health treatment and theory. from Freud and Jung to New Age and Eastern Philosophies, I have developed my own sense of a Humanistic approach based on the premise that caring for the client is foremost in the treatment process. I have learned the healing relationship between therapist and client is more important then the theory or model that is being practiced, and it is also very important for the type of treatment being practiced to be consistent with the needs of the client. In other words, I don't make my client fit into my treatment approach but create an approach to meet the needs of my client. I truly believe in total acceptance and recognize that the patient has the power and responsibility to make changes required to solve problems and live a happier and contented life. I also believe that the unconscious is a powerful influence on everyone's perception of who they are and how the world responds to them. Self-discovery is part of the process, as is learning cognitive behavioral tools to resolve irrational beliefs and coping with emotions. I believe that unconscious thoughts, as well as negative or irrational beliefs play a dominate role in in the problems we face in our lives. Therapy will focus on getting in touch with one's true self and gaining a rational understanding of the motivations behind one's unhealthy behaviors and beliefs. with this understanding one begins to accept life situations for what they really mean. The process therefore develops an acceptance of the problem, increases motivation for change and instills a powerful belief and awareness that one can actually have the power to make the necessary changes that are required to solve the problems, which brought them into therapy. I have learned that the most significant factor in successful treatment of an individual is to focus on the individual and not on the problem. As I have taught my students and interns " If you focus on the problem you lose sight of the individual". No matter what problem the client brings into the therapy, the solution will be unique to the individuals experiences, skills and personal development. We have to treat the individual not the problem.

Russ Pool, LPC
Mental Health Counselor/Therapist

My practice involves two very different populations: adult and children. For adults I bring a combination of empathic listening and insightful questions to my clients. As a listener, I communicate realness, caring and a deeply sensitive non-judgmental understanding. I practice participative and empathic listening, while allowing his client to freely vent their feelings. Simultaneously I brings discordant elements into a mutual, self-disclosing confrontation. My approach deals with the hear-and-now. I focus attention on immediate behavior. While clients often feel fragmented, with at least some perceptions, feelings, behaviors or thoughts that are puzzling, unrelated, troubling or discordant, I help you discover and align these various aspects. For children, I present a very different set of skills. First, there’s an extensive assessment period that may last as long as a month – including sessions with parents, guardians and children together and individually. With parents and guardians, I act as a fact-finder – understanding what’s been happening and your attempts to make improvements. For children, I act as a fun, happy adult-playmate who assesses their experiences through attachment and play-based testing. With the parents, I then discuss what I have observed and potential therapies specifically tailored to your child’s needs. As a leader at one of the country’s largest personal growth facilities for 14 years I learned to listen to the multiple depths of my clients and encourage their strengths. My approach is both client-centered and body oriented. After a dozen years honing these team-building skills in the business arena, Russ completed his Master’s Degree in Counseling, two years of specialty training and supervision in Internal Family Systems Therapy. Currently, I have begun seeing children while I complete an intense supervision with the areas leading child psychologist.
