An Atmosphere of Change
Sometimes you discover that the path you find yourself on is not the same path you had set out on in the beginning. By participating in the psychotherapy process, you allow yourself to strengthen what is best in you, so that you may become more effective and satisfied in dealing with challenges you encounter in your life. I work with you to help you rediscover and nurture your innate strength and capabilities and to use your inner wisdom to guide your actions and sooth your emotions. Therapy can help you build on the capacities that you have already developed. It can also help you learn how to think about old problems in new ways and how to act differently when facing them. To the extent that it is necessary, therapy can allow you to take a broader look at what has gone wrong in your life and what improvements will be necessary for your circumstances or experiences to become more satisfying. Beyond looking at yourself clearly and mastering new skills, therapy will help you develop greater self-control and self-esteem. I offer counseling sessions for individuals, couples, and families.

Are You Feeling Down and Can't Stop Crying? Is Your
Relationship Off Track? I Can Help You Live Better!
How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. If I will feel that I may not be the right fit, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who specialize in the issue you are seeking a solution for (i.e., pain management). We will also discuss fees. In our first session I will go over the inform consent and office policies with you and will collect data for the intake. I will become very involved with you and we will work as a team. I will ask you what your goals are and after a couple of sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will be in a very safe and supportive environment. I will learn to know who you are and what your personality is and I will adapt the therapeutic process to meet your individual needs. We will discuss your progress as we go along and make changes if the need arises. We will also discuss those changes to ensure that we are on the right direction in your path for personal growth.

Effective Therapy Creates
Meaningful, Lasting, Joyful Change
Each of us is unique, complex and special. Together we can resolve the inner and outer conflicts that create pain and exhaustion. Our life often brings experiences not of our choosing. Sometimes we’re hurt by others. Sometimes we don’t fit easily into the world we live in. Sometimes what life brings feels too big to accept and manage. I can help you find peaceful and practical ways of doing the best you can with what is, of managing your self and situations with compassion and skill, of finding joy and nourishment in this life at this time. For over 25 years I have been practicing my craft with children, adolescents, middle adults, elders, couples and families. They have come to me with developmental, situational and relational issues. Some had experienced tragedies; some felt overwhelmed by their children or partner. Some were deeply grieving, some filled with anger. Some had illnesses or disabilities they wish they didn’t. Each of them added to my understanding of what it is to be human. Most of us long for happiness, self acceptance, caring relationships and success in our endeavors. Together, drawing from my extensive training and experience and your inner and outer resources, we can create meaningful, lasting and joyful change.

Simple Solutions for Complicated Lives
Be Your Own Guru~Tuning In To Inner Clarity
Of course you are affected by your loved one's behaviors. How could you not be? It makes perfect sense that you would want to support and give to the dear ones in your life. But sometimes focusing on other people can become a problem. Especially if prioritizing others and trying to anticipate their needs before they've even voiced them has been the main source of one's validation, praise, even identity. This pattern can stand in the way of your success if it leaves no energy for your personal development. People can find themselves feeling lost and lonely in their own lives. Feeling purposeless, unmotivated, drifting, can be signs that something is wrong. Because in study after study, human beings have shown themselves to be overwhelmingly drawn to work they are passionate about, motivated to be part of making a difference, endlessly creative when given the right circumstances, wanting to make connections Often people don't talk about the way they are feeling because they're afraid of the stigma of DEPRESSION, what if that's what they're feeling? Perhaps, but most of the time there are simple Life Skills missing in these instances and with a few simple evidence-based tools in hand there can be major change. A person can see themselves having more success in communication in general, but specifically in negotiating what they need at their jobs to make it worthwhile for them to be there. They can see themselves suddenly not paralyzed when major things don't go as planned because they know how to talk themselves through it, who to reach out to for help, and how to take care of themselves until they feel better enough to make decisions from a healthier emotional/mental state. They are able to put into play a few regular practices that support self connection and develop emotional intelligence allowing them to think on their feet, experience and identify emotion in the moment and not have to act on it, see and articulate choice and so many other emotional intelligence capacities. If you are experiencing difficulty in personal relationships, finding it hard to function at work or in the rest of your life, experiencing either a confused, dissociated state or an extreme loss of motivation, struggles with self-esteem, a chronic self criticism, not acknowledging your successes or thinking you have none? You can stop feeling badly that you struggle with these things. They are often part of a set of behavioral symptoms that has points to a lack of Life Skills, one of those repurposed words, which means several things: *you aren't alone *you are ok *you can feel better because there is help, support, and these skills can be learned There's no reason to struggle alone with this any longer. I offer free consultations so you can call and schedule one today. 415-378-7506

Survive an affair/ infidelity ...then thrive as a couple!
Develop the relationship you've always dreamed of having!
From my many years of experience as a psychotherapist, I know the quality of our relationships is central to our entire experience of life. If our primary relationship is not going well, it is hard for us to be truly happy so I am especially passionate about helping couples in crisis, when there has been some kind of betrayal. So many relationships that start out feeling wonderful and exciting end up in frustration and disappointment. In addition, life crises can stress a relationship to the brink. It saddens me to know that couples go through the intense pain of breaking up only to struggle in their next relationship. It doesn't need to be that way. I help couples learn skills that give them immediate relief from their most hurtful encounters and foster deep empathy, understanding and connection. In only a few coaching sessions with your partner, you will learn how to communicate in ways that: * Rekindle friendship and passion * Truly resolve long standing conflict and * Lead to individual growth and satisfaction. I see psychotherapy as helping people access their inner resources, deepen their self awareness, develop strategies for overcoming obstacles and break old habits, and learning coping skills to face the inevitable stresses of life. I am an empathetic, active listener who approaches my clients' concerns with deep respect, honesty, pragmatism, caring and sometimes, with humor. I am results oriented and ensure that my clients can transfer what they experience and learn in my sessions to their real life. I am humbled and honored by the trust my clients have shown me over the years as me I have accompanied them on their journey back to safety and and enriched personal relationships and to more fulfillment and satisfaction with life.

"Therapist to the Therapy"
I am an empathic human being and a highly trained Certified Psychoanalyst, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Credentialed Alcoholism Counselor. I help others manage and resolve difficulties of the heart -- love, loss and work during significant life changes; for example, career change, death/illness in family, divorce, relapse with addiction(s), criminal arrests, loss of work, etc. I am committed to providing high-quality professional assessment and counseling/psychotherapy to people who have not accessed or have had prior unsatisfactory experiences with psychotherapy. I am also committed to travel the lengthy road of psychoanalysis with people who want to take this voyage. A second arm of my private practice is "Second Opinions": Some consumers are in a "stalemate" in their present "therapy"-- where there is a serious impasse and "work" is forfeited. I consult with individuals who can no longer productively work in their current therapy, oftentimes beginning to resolve major impasses. On occasion, the individual's therapist volunteers to be part of this process. In some cases, fruitful work is resumed. In other instances, a decision to leave the current therapy ensues. My interest in psychotherapy is borne by helping clients learn about themselves in seeing things differently—not changing their world, but having new eyes. By engaging in this process one finds obstacles in the past that impinge in reaching one’s full potential in the present. Psychotherapy is helpful in working through such issues by addressing the underlying emotions and bringing them into awareness. One may achieve a sense of inner peace and emotional freedom, making possible more fulfilling relationships with oneself and others. A third arm of my private practice is assistance to criminal defense attorneys specializing in high-profile white collar crime and DWI/DUIs. I have navigated the field of expert witness and prepared confidential psychiatric reports as well as prepleading memoranda to help individuals and their counsel have a win-win situation.

Marriage and Family Therapy
Resolve Problems and Enhance Your Relationships
I am a marriage and family therapist who actually specializes in marriage and families. I work with individuals, couples and families--children, young adults, adults and seniors--who want to resolve problems and enhance their relationships. Even in the best circumstances we all face the challenges that everyday living brings....work and school problems, parenting challenges, financial concerns, fidelity and trust and day-to-day stress. Working from a perspective that each person knows himself or herself best, we work as a team to uncover your strengths and use them to reach your goaIs. I have been in practice for over 30 years. Originally I worked with children and adolescents and found that soon after the children completed therapy, their parents would call regarding their relationship. Many called because they felt comfortable coming to me with their issues after seeing the changes in their children. After about 10 years I began seeing the teenage and young adult children of original couples with whom I worked. They, in turn, recommended their friends and associates. A large part of my practice now is the people between16 and 40. Still, many of my clients are couples who have issues with fidelity, feel angry or resentful, or have lost the "spark"and want to try to improve their relationship and save their marriage. Most want to do more than just"save it" and we work together to enhance their ability to empathize with each other and develop skills to interact with each other in more respectful and loving ways. My practice uses a variety of modalities including cognitive-behavioral, narrative, humanistic and psychodynamic as well as guided imagery, meditation, role play and other methods based on what works best with each particular client.

We All Need Help Sometimes
I'm here to help you feel better, do better, and get better
Whether you're experiencing depression, anxiety, or stress, or if you have problems at work or at home, my sole aim is to help you make the changes you desire. Likewise, if you're in a relationship and you're not getting along, suffering from a betrayal, or simply having trouble finding a partner, I can help you to understand what's going on and overcome your relationship challenges. I take a two-prong approach. 1) To help you find out "how did I get here?" so you don't have to re-visit this place again. 2) To help you learn new ways of relating, coping, and expressing yourself that foster good relationships, friendships, and work connections. If people have been telling you that you need to get over it or to move on, or if you think so yourself, all that does is add pressure to an already difficult experience. I take an "addition" approach - learning new tools and thinking about things in new ways - rather than a "getting rid of" approach (which doesn't work anyway!) Thoughts like - What's wrong with me? Why can't I be like other people - doesn't mean that something is ACTUALLY wrong with you! It could be that you're doing your best to cope with certain challenges, some of which may have arisen in your past. For example, if you were betrayed in a prior relationship and you don't trust your current partner, you're using a former coping strategy in a new situation. I would help you find new ways to deal with the lack of trust and other feelings that could be causing you to act in ways that may have hurt your partner and the relationship. As another example, let's say that there was a lot of fighting in your family and you closed yourself off in your room. Now, any time there's the potential for conflict you withdraw. You're protecting yourself from either being hurt or hurting the other person. But this relationship might be different from your past ones (including your family), and withdrawing could actually be harmful. With either example, one goal for therapy would be find new ways to cope with these feelings, as well as to understand that nothing is "wrong" with you. It's just that your actions may be counter-productive. The other goal is Empowerment; sometimes you may choose to withdraw or be untrusting - but the key is to choose and not automatically react that way. Another way I see therapy is putting puzzle pieces together. You may have all of the pieces, but we need to put them together to figure out what motivates you and why you feel the way you do - as well as making the changes you desire.

Supportive Space Counseling Center
The future of mental health care.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of New Jersey as well as a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and National Board Certified TeleMental Health provider (BC-TMH). I possess extensive experience working in the field of mental health care with adolescents, adults, and families over the last 10 years. I received my Masters degree from Monmouth University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and am currently working toward obtaining my Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision with a specialization in Leadership Studies. I am also the owner of Supportive Space Counseling Center, LLC., New Jersey's first entirely online outpatient counseling agency founded in 2019. I believe that psychotherapy is a unique experience. It can bring insight, relief and empowerment. We all have the intelligence and strength to work through difficult issues, but sometimes we need a little help. If you are feeling anxious, depressed, lost or alone, therapy can help you move forward. As we work together to develop a deeper understanding of your thoughts and feelings, you will be more equipped to resolve the inner turmoil and confusion which at times affects us all. Self-discovery and gaining a deeper understanding of oneself is not always easy but it can be the greatest gift you could ever give to yourself and the ones you love. As a solution-focused therapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is fulfilling and meaningful. If you're looking for extra support and guidance through a challenging situation or you're just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals!

Are You Feeling Stuck? Anxious? Depressed?
Therapy for Individuals, Couples & Families
The saying "An examined life is not worth living" always comes to mind when I encounter an individual who is mired down in problems and unable to find happiness. That you are visiting this page tells me you have already embarked on a path to address the issues that are stopping you from moving forward. In a warm and safe environment I can provide you with the tools you need to indeed live the life you wish to live. Together we can explore and uncover the obstacles that prevent you from enjoying the relationships you deserve along with the dreams and goals you want to pursue. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY While I use many different approaches in therapy, including talk therapy, I work through an attachment lens which means that sometimes it is important to explore one's past to see how it affects you in the present. I believe everyone benefits from finding new options to address previously self-defeating patterns. I also like to incorporate mindfulness practices into my therapeutic work. My clients have observed that their overall functioning has dramatically improved by practicing mindfulness in their daily lives. COUPLES When two individuals come together I am often reminded of the expression, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." Relationships require nurturing and attention and sometimes with the best of intentions, couples drift apart or arrive at an impasse. I am marriage friendly, LGBTQ friendly, and believe that most couples have the ability to work out their dissatisfaction with one another. Much of the time, with commitment and a desire to rekindle long-lost feelings, couples, with the help of therapy, can master the communications skills they need to find emotional safety and connection in their relationship.

NYC AFFIRMATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY LCSW PLLC is a community focused sustainable sliding scale mental health practice in Manhattan providing treatment to individual adults ages 18+. Our mission is simple: provide affirmative psychotherapy in a sustainable way to the community. By affirmative we mean that we do not view individuals from the perspective of being defective or needing to be fixed. We instead recognize the innate strengths that continue to allow people to function while enduring difficult life circumstances. Challenging childhoods and distressing adult experiences, coupled with the toxic impact of systemic oppression, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and xenophobia impact our mental health. Our goal is to fill a gap in mental health services provided to those that are historically marginalized and disenfranchised; we are especially committed to serving queer communities of color. We also strive to be culturally aware and trauma-informed. And, most importantly, we’re here to help you feel better and make change. We firmly believe that change is possible and that we as human beings grow in relationships where an empathic and attuned other bears witness to our struggles. You are not alone. Healing the Mind and Spirit
I work with adolescents and adults. My specialties are anxiety and mood disorders, couple therapy, trauma and loss, clinical hypnosis and EMDR and schema therapy. Typically, I do brief therapy --6-12 sessions. I am seeing a few patients for longer periods of time. I see myself as a coach and facilitator. For me, therapy is a collaborative relationship where therapist and patient go on a shared journey for a limited time. The journey is rewarding yet difficult, hard work but rewarding. There is no magic wand in therapy as in life. My focus is primarily on the present and future. Collaboration, feedback from both therapist and patient, honesty, skill training within a confidential, safe relationship are the keys to effective psychotherapy. I am comfortable dealing with spiritual issues if they impact a person's difficulties. As a clergyman and psychologist, I recognize that a healthy spirituality can be an important resources in the healing process. I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation so a seeker of therapy services can get some feel for how I am. Whatever the therapist s theoretical orientation., the research says that it is the "fit" between therapist and patients that contributes mightily to a positive outcome. At the intake interview, a careful assessment is made and we go over treatment options. An informed patient gets the most out of therapy.

Effective Trauma Treatment with EMDR
My practice specializes in treatment trauma, both individual and complex, with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is an evidence/research model that is successful in the treatment of recent and past traumatic events. EMDR is especially helpful to clients who have experienced trauma given it is not an exposure treatment model and does not required extensive talking about the traumatic incidents. The first two sessions are used to develop a psychosocial history and to identify the specific events to be desensitized with EMDR. Prior to treatment of traumatic events, clients create and practice realization tools to help with the success of the therapy. Traumatic incidents are scaled on the Subjective Units of Disturbance Scale ( 0 to 10) with 10 being the most severe. The goal in treatment is to bring the level of distress for the trauma to 0 or neutral. In addition, I specialize in working with Homicide Survivors, an individual who has had a member of their family murdered. I use the EMDR and the Recent Event Protocol to focus on and desensitize the event for the victim.

Help for Trauma, Relationships, Anxiety, Eating Disorders
It's hard to be objective when you feel stuck. In psychotherapy, I help people take a step back. As a trauma therapist for 25 years, working in Toronto, I do counseling and therapy for people dealing with the results of painful relationships. I help people develop goals and make changes in their lives. Adults and adolescents see me when they're having conflicts in their important family relationships, when they've experienced trauma, loss, or divorce, when they have posttraumatic symptoms from interpersonal trauma, when they are in psychological distress at work, home, or school, and when they are struggling with an eating disorder or severe anxiety. You can see more by checking out Dr. Robert T. Muller's award-winning psychotherapy work: "Trauma and the Avoidant Client: Attachment-Based Strategies for Healing" (published in 2010 by W.W. Norton) and "Trauma and the Struggle to Open Up: From Avoidance to Recovery and Growth" (published in 2018 by W.W. Norton).

I am a private practicioner accepting most insurances as well as cash and credit cards.. I see adults, children, & adolescents for a variety of emotional and behavior issues. I utilize several modalities of treatment including Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Solution-Focused therapy, Play theapy, and Sandtray therapy. I mostly work with individuals but also work with their families. I work with all ages of patients who have lost a loved one recently or not so recently to work with them on the grief process. There are all ages of patients who are experiencing a mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder that I see to help them utilize skills to cope with and change their patterns of thoughts. Many ages of patients also experience anxiety that I assist in teaching them anxiety skills management. Many children and adolescents struggle with some sort of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and I work with them on strengthening their executive functioning skills like increasing attention and focus, decreasing impulsivity, etc. I also teach the parents skills to assist their child. Many of the children or adolescents I work with have an emotional or behavioral disorder. I am currently working on a play therapist certification. The above are just a few of the many issues I have worked with during the last 23 + years of experience. I have also worked with people who have eating disorders, relationship conflicts, job stress/issues, adults and children experiencing divorce issues, substance abuse, compulsive gambling, gender identity issues, selective mutism, sensory processing disorders, attachment issues, etc.

Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. Evaluations, Treatment, and Consultations
I focus on three primary methods in attempting to help clients: Psychological evaluations, Therapeutic counseling, and short term Consultations. My therapeutic purpose is to help you define your goals in a manner that allows you to reach them with an active positive ‘here and now’ experience. The primary therapeutic techniques in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and I specialize treatment of Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, and other disabilities. When working with families changing how members interact and communicate with each other is a fundamental key to encourage children to grow and reach their potential. Psychological evaluations can be needed for a variety of reasons and I have conducted them as part of an assessment for learning disabilities, medical/surgical requirements, and documentation of hardship letters. Consultations are done when an important, but brief, question arises and additional professional feedback is sought. Feel free to contact me by email if you have any questions.

Dr. Martin specializes in the treatment of Anxiety and Fears: Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Medical Procedure Fears, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Work Stress, Marital Stress, Specific Phobias. Treatment emphasizes Exposure-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Treatment is active, collaborative, supportive, and custom tailored to each individual. The patient works at his or her own pace while actively learning to think and behave in ways that increase confidence. Successful therapy leads to reduced anxiety, depression, avoidance and impairment. Dr. Martin has offices in both Marin and Sonoma Counties. Problems Treated: PANIC DISORDER: Panic Disorder essentially means fear of panic attacks. Many people (perhaps one out of five) experience panic attacks, yet most are not frightened about them. They are very uncomfortable, but are usually understood not to be dangerous. Most people float with them while the adrenalin burns off and within a half an hour or so, feel recovered and may feel a little “off” for an hour or so afterwards (like they just ran an Olympic sprint). A panic attack is a sudden and severe onset of anxiety which may include, for example, heart racing, difficulty breathing, feelings of dread and needing to escape, light-headedness or dizziness. AGORAPHOBIA: In most instances, Agoraphobia refers to the experience of great emotional distress in, or avoidance of situations where one fears having a panic attack. In other words, it often accompanies Panic Disorder. Situations include shopping malls, church services, parties, restaurants, airplanes, bridges, freeways, doctors offices and even medical and dental procedures such as MRIs where the patient feels trapped and afraid of having a panic attack or in some cases a more limited symptom (not quite panic). Again, the underlying fear here would be either physical harm; social humiliation; or losing mental control and somehow not being able to get help. OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD may take a variety of forms. Six of these seem to account for most of OCD. Many sufferers experience more than one form and symptoms may change over time. GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER. These patients have frequent episodes of worry, often many times a day. They worry excessively about such things as paying bills, traffic accidents, illness, etc. Their anxiety goes up and down as the individual is confronted situationally or mentally with a worried thought. SPECIFIC PHOBIAS. These include for instance, fear of heights, flying, driving, public speaking, closed spaces, or animals. These individuals usually know their fears are exaggerated but like all anxiety disorders they continue to wonder “what if.” Thus, they either avoid situations or endure them with much distress. DEPRESSION. Unlike an anxiety disorder, clinical depression often affects mood in many situations which are not stressful in and of themselves. Getting easily frustrated over small things is a common symptom of Clinical Depression. Depressed mood, tearfulness, loss of interest in normally pleasurable activities, lowered feelings of self worth and suicidal feelings are common symptoms. Getting increasingly frustrated or irritable, having constant ruminative worry, difficulty concentrating or remembering things, problems sleeping or with appetite can all feel like symptoms of anxiety. But they are also common symptoms of clinical depression. SITUATIONAL STRESS. Marital problems, grief over loss of a friend, work conflicts, or financial uncertainty are all examples of situational stress. These stressors may be temporary, but can also be quite distressing and impairing and can lead to more serious problems over time such as an anxiety disorder or clinical depression.
