Therapy for Change in Changing Times
I have been successfully coaching and counseling people in my private practice since 1990. Typically, my clients are looking to overcome obstacles to their optimum happiness and fulfillment. Many clients are working through unfinished business from their past experience, while many are more recently blocked or stuck in self defeating habits or behaviors. Together, clients and I draw upon a variety of understandings and tools from Western social psychological knowledge and Eastern traditions and philosophies.

Psychotherapist in Toronto
Help for Trauma, Relationships, Anxiety, Eating Disorders
It's hard to be objective when you feel stuck. In psychotherapy, I help people take a step back. As a trauma therapist for 25 years, working in Toronto, I do counseling and therapy for people dealing with the results of painful relationships. I help people develop goals and make changes in their lives. Adults and adolescents see me when they're having conflicts in their important family relationships, when they've experienced trauma, loss, or divorce, when they have posttraumatic symptoms from interpersonal trauma, when they are in psychological distress at work, home, or school, and when they are struggling with an eating disorder or severe anxiety. You can see more by checking out Dr. Robert T. Muller's award-winning psychotherapy work: "Trauma and the Avoidant Client: Attachment-Based Strategies for Healing" (published in 2010 by W.W. Norton) and "Trauma and the Struggle to Open Up: From Avoidance to Recovery and Growth" (published in 2018 by W.W. Norton).

My relationship with my clients not only includes helping them in the crisis moments, but also being available throughout life for whatever may come up - many return to therapy for "tune-ups" at different points in their lives. At the foundation of my approach, I conceptualizes all individuals and their interactions with others (relationships) within the Systems framework. More simply, one cannot understand the dynamic of our struggles without exploring the familial, social, and cultural contexts. My work is based in Solution-Focused Therapy. This encourages dialogue to explore client's strengths, resources, and past successes. My collaborative approach fosters a sense of agency in clients, creating a co-constructed dialogue to explore and create realistic attainable therapeutic goals. This approach further emphasizes that clients best understand their unique circumstances. Therefore the role of therapist is to support a co-constructed dialogue around necessary changes in perceptions, thoughts, and behaviors. Lastly, I bring to the environment a compassionate and gentle stance, providing my clients with a warm and safe environment allowing more opportunity for clients to deeply explore their history and present struggles.

I utilize several modalities of treatment including Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Solution-Focused therapy, Play theapy, and Sandtray therapy. I mostly work with individuals but also work with their families. I work with all ages of patients who have lost a loved one recently or not so recently to work with them on the grief process. There are all ages of patients who are experiencing a mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder that I see to help them utilize skills to cope with and change their patterns of thoughts. Many ages of patients also experience anxiety that I assist in teaching them anxiety skills management. Many children and adolescents struggle with some sort of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and I work with them on strengthening their executive functioning skills like increasing attention and focus, decreasing impulsivity, etc. I also teach the parents skills to assist their child. Many of the children or adolescents I work with have an emotional or behavioral disorder. I am currently working on a play therapist certification. The above are just a few of the many issues I have worked with during the last 23 + years of experience. I have also worked with people who have eating disorders, relationship conflicts, job stress/issues, adults and children experiencing divorce issues, substance abuse, compulsive gambling, gender identity issues, selective mutism, sensory processing disorders, attachment issues, etc.

How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. If I will feel that I may not be the right fit, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who specialize in the issue you are seeking a solution for (i.e., pain management). We will also discuss fees. In our first session I will go over the inform consent and office policies with you and will collect data for the intake. I will become very involved with you and we will work as a team. I will ask you what your goals are and after a couple of sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will be in a very safe and supportive environment. I will learn to know who you are and what your personality is and I will adapt the therapeutic process to meet your individual needs. We will discuss your progress as we go along and make changes if the need arises. We will also discuss those changes to ensure that we are on the right direction in your path for personal growth.

Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

Health and Happiness are Choices to Make for Life.
Facilitating Wellness and Transformational Change.
Anyone can benefit from Art Therapy regardless of skill or age. Art Therapy is about the therapeutic process of artistic creation, not the product. Art Therapy may be considered a specialty in the world of mental health, recovery, and rehabilitation. Art Therapists are specifically trained through Master's-level Art Therapy degree programs approved by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) and Art Therapy Credentialing Board (ATCB) standards. Please use caution when choosing a therapist. There are counseling therapists who claim they do "art therapy" or "expressive arts therapy" with their clients; however, unless they have a specific degree or post-Graduate certification and required-documented supervision under an ATR (Registered Art Therapist), they cannot ethically advertise nor practice "art therapy" or "expressive arts therapy." Receiving "art therapy" or "expressive arts therapy" from a non-specialized practitioner may do more harm than good. If you have any questions, please contact Noetic Art Therapy, LLC. or the Missouri Art Therapy Association. About Noetic Art Therapy: The creation of art can be a transformational experience. We are open to and interested in working with individuals who believe there is something more to life than only what is at the surface. We look beyond the status quo. We work clinically with archetypes, dreams, beliefs, visioning, mindfulness methods, and our higher intuitive consciousness to transcend and transform outdated and limiting scripts, beliefs, and judgments—with the intention of living a life that is more fully aligned at all levels. Greater experiences of joy, abundance, grace, and loving for the highest good of all concerned shall emerge. This approach can be considered transpersonal and/or psycho-spiritual in nature. This corresponds to the meaning of the word, "noetic." From this unique approach to art therapy we intend to understand our own personal experience from new reference points of awareness and clarity. We acknowledge the unique paths we have walked, roads we have driven, people who we have affected, and those who have affected us. We become clear through the process of Noetic Art Therapy of the essence of who and what we are, what our and others' beliefs, judgments, behaviors and actions have meant in our lives. From here we may decide to clear and resolve those outdated, no longer useful, blockages that we have been carrying, which have been keeping us from our bliss. It is through this lens of viewing oneself and the world that new understandings occur. We realize we are the conscious creators and facilitators of our own realities. Thoughts, feelings, behavior, self expression, and ultimately our experience of ourselves, others, and the world shifts toward equanimity.

Turn crises in opportunties for growth
25 years experience as an adult and couples therapist
ADULT INDIVIDUAL THERAPY Do you want to heal the pain from the past and experience the life that you want in the present? Do you want to learn how to cherish your partner and live in peaceful harmony? Do you want to work through past traumas, change dysfunctional family patterns and shed outdated defenses? Problems in life are unavoidable, but suffering is a choice. Trying to elude the pain of life's challenges can leave you stuck in stress, anxiety, and depression. As we navigate troubled waters, the last thing we may be thinking about is the opportunity to grow. My approach to therapy offers clients more than just short-term band-aids to cure symptoms. I utilize experiential techniques to bridge the gap between the verbal, problem-solving part of our brains and the nonverbal, intuitive, emotional part. Both parts help us to identify the sources of problems, and develop new patterns and skills for handling them. While I focus on the whole client, not just the presenting problem, some of the areas I specialize in include: * Anxiety * Bereavement * Chronic medical conditions * Depression * Family-of-origin concerns * Self-esteem issues * Trauma resolution / PTSD * Workplace concerns COUPLES THERAPY Do you want to forgive past injuries and rediscover that couple holding hands? Most couples struggle finding the balance between the “we” and the “me”. Too much “we” and the sense of self becomes blurred; too much “me” and there's not enough glue (intimacy) in the relationship to keep it together over time. Emotionally-focused couples treatment emphasizes valuing and validating each other. I honor the wisdom in each of my clients; you will not be judged. Our work together will take you from blaming and alienation, to engagement, connectedness and security. Research shows couples with a 5:1 ratio of positive / negative interactions build up a resilient "emotional bank". Learn communication skills, conflict resolution techniques, and how to cultivate the loving behaviors to get to the magic ratio. Some of the issues I've been able to assist couples in tackling are: * Blended families * Communication problems * Divorce prevention * Internet & sexual addictions * Parenting concerns * Relationship issues ADOLESCENT THERAPY Figuring out who you are, and who you want to be is a major undertaking at any age. For teens, the task of self-definition is fraught with possibilities and perils. Together, we will work to help you develop a healthy sense of self, and establish goals and patterns to set you on a course for a happy and productive life. Areas of focus may include: * ADD / ADHD * Depression * Giftedness * Parental separation and divorce * Peer relationships * School failure

We work with individuals and couples to address issues including trust, vulnerability (physical, emotional), sexuality & sexual identity, communication, and conflict. We often meet with couples who are looking to improve their relationship, enhance mutual understanding and compassion for each other, create a closer connection, heal after an infidelity, handle recurrent arguments and money conflicts, address sexuality (including divergent desires), or decide if they should stay together or part ways. There are many therapeutic approaches used when meeting with a couple. We like to evaluate what approaches to use based on your needs and style as a couple. There isn’t one “right approach” to doing therapy as there isn’t one way to live. We provide education on what we have found useful in relationships. We invite you to look at new ideas and possibilities for living. We encourage you to try new ways of behaving and communicating. We like to learn from you about what you really want in your relationship. We are very interested in what each partner has to say about what has led to their struggle or becoming stuck. We want to know what you have done to change your situation, what has worked and what has not worked for you. We are careful not to duplicate what hasn’t worked. Counselors avoid taking sides because it is counterproductive to long-term success. That said, if we feel one partner needs to make a change in a particular area, we will say so. We have spent years helping men and women from every imaginable background and we are capable of seeing things empathetically from both perspectives. We emphasize the importance of forming a connection with your partner. This means there is an implied understanding of values, a common frame of reference, a series of shared experience and a sense that you are both on the same page. These connections form the bonds that foster trust and promote intimacy. We all need help from time to time and it is a sign of strength and intelligence to know when to seek support. If I have a leaky faucet and the only tool I have is a hammer, just banging on my pipes is only going to make the problem worse. The pipes burst, my basement floods and the foundation cracks. Or I could just call the plumber and he gives me a new tool called a wrench, so next time I have a leak I can fix it myself. Throughout our lives, we improve our skills by taking “courses” and practicing what we learn. If we played sports, we were coached in the basics and practiced them until they became memorized. At work, we were shown how to perform tasks, then got better and better as we repeated the process. To learn cooking or grilling, we followed recipes or observed someone with known abilities, then added our personal touches. Being emotionally healthy is another skill, one that gets little or no attention until failure to do so results in trouble. When life gives you lemons ... what do you do? Whether you believe we choose our own circumstances, that there is a master plan, or that sometimes sh*t happens, you still have reactions, feelings, and decisions to make about "what next?" It is NOT YOUR FAULT you have problems stemming from your past, and it IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to create your future. If you knew HOW to do that, you would probably not be looking for a therapist! I will help you design a positive life, REGARDLESS OF YOUR HISTORY. I trust and respect your ability to make good choices and decisions, when you are able to pay attention to your inner voice, your sense of who you are at the core. I will help you discover, re-discover, or create your true self, so that problems in your life become opportunities for growth. I sometimes conduct sessions that are not framed by the clock, working with individuals or couples until a natural stopping point. This flexible scheduling allows for resolution and re-direction in a more time-friendly manner. I help couples learn to value and appreciate the differences that have been driving them apart, and to regain the loving feelings that brought them together. I help those with a medical condition deal with the anger, depression, frustration, and other feelings that are associated with illness, and I also provide a safe place for their family members or significant others to deal with their own feelings and concerns. My office has a calming, Zen atmosphere, a soothing and pleasant environment. I am no longer on any insurance panels. If you wish, I provide statements for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement of a percentage of fees.

My personal belief about therapy is that Psychotherapy is a creative process of change. The client enters into the process in a collaborative role knowing more about their concerns and strengths than I do. I then tailor the therapeutic process to meet the client's needs based on those concerns and strengths. The goal is to create a renewed sense of empowerment and balance into the client's life. I have been in private practice for 18 years. I work with adults, adolescents and couples as well as groups. (See the information below on my Mindful Eating Group.) My style is interactive. In my practice, I use Internal Family Systems, Feminist therapy, Jungian therapy and Mindfulness. As a therapist, I consider myself a generalist. Yet, over the years I have developed an interest in two areas. One is in working with people and families who are dealing with disabilities or chronic illness. The other interest is Mindful Eating, changing one's relationship with food.

Helping Men Struggling in Their Lives and with Their Wives
Welcome! As "The Man That Men Will Talk To," I'm a Phoenix, Arizona based counselor and therapist for men who specializes in working with men who are struggling in their relationships and their lives. I get that even good, smart men need help with their lives sometimes, and need someone other than their buddies to talk something through with. I work with both men individually and with couples. I focus on helping men and women learn how to communicate with each other, develop successful relationships, and improve their relationships. The positive effects of counseling with Jason? A. Renew your marriage with less conflict and anger B. Become a better dad, and stop mirroring bad behaviors to your kid C. Make a happier wife (is a happier life) D. Cool angry, stressful feelings for yourself E. Overly nice guy? Tough time with women? Learn to say no F. Actually figure out how to fix your relationship (you know you've tried over and over to fix it in your head, right?) Depression and anxiety can also subside with my therapy. Work, life and relationships are stressful enough, so stop putting off what needs to be fixed now. It's unfortunate when men or couples wait until the 11th hour to fix things, when it might be too late for relationship repair. And hey, counseling is cheaper than moving out, and a pricey divorce or breakup, right? I also work with gay and same-sex individuals and couples to help create ideal relationships. So, check out my free report, "10 Relationship Tactics To Go From Good To Great With Her." You'll also be signed up for my free monthly newsletter, "Mentality," worthwhile cheat-sheet to provide you with new tools, tips and strategies for great relationships, work life and personal life (things you can tell your wife you came up with on your own!)
