Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. If I will feel that I may not be the right fit, I will provide you with referrals for therapists who specialize in the issue you are seeking a solution for (i.e., pain management). We will also discuss fees. In our first session I will go over the inform consent and office policies with you and will collect data for the intake. I will become very involved with you and we will work as a team. I will ask you what your goals are and after a couple of sessions, I will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will be in a very safe and supportive environment. I will learn to know who you are and what your personality is and I will adapt the therapeutic process to meet your individual needs. We will discuss your progress as we go along and make changes if the need arises. We will also discuss those changes to ensure that we are on the right direction in your path for personal growth.

Help for Trauma, Relationships, Anxiety, Eating Disorders
It's hard to be objective when you feel stuck. In psychotherapy, I help people take a step back. As a trauma therapist for 25 years, working in Toronto, I do counseling and therapy for people dealing with the results of painful relationships. I help people develop goals and make changes in their lives. Adults and adolescents see me when they're having conflicts in their important family relationships, when they've experienced trauma, loss, or divorce, when they have posttraumatic symptoms from interpersonal trauma, when they are in psychological distress at work, home, or school, and when they are struggling with an eating disorder or severe anxiety. You can see more by checking out Dr. Robert T. Muller's award-winning psychotherapy work: "Trauma and the Avoidant Client: Attachment-Based Strategies for Healing" (published in 2010 by W.W. Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. Family Coaching
At Risk Teens and Parent Coaching.
FAMILY COACHING! Is your teen getting the best of you? Is your teen making you question your sanity? Is your teen making you question your parenting ability? If your answer is "YES!" to any of these, rest assured that you are not alone. You have come to the right place to get the help that your teenager needs and the support that you deserve. Through the use of humor, flexibility, creativity, firmness and fairness I have developed a unique ability to connect with even the most therapy resistant kids. I will help them through their struggles in a trusting atmosphere. In the course of therapy we will work on: Impulse control, frustration tolerance, anger management, organizational skills, social skills, self discipline, empathy, substance abuse (If applicable), healthy expression of feelings and anything else that comes up. We will also have family sessions to make sure that we are on track. I write for Parent magazine and I have worked in a special education setting for over 18 years. I can help with learning disabilities, ADHD and emotional problems that inhibit learning. I can also help with funding. I do house calls for an extra fee.

Offering combination of psychotherapy, private yoga,
and trauma-informed yoga sessions
We are all presented with challenges, stressors, and anxieties on a daily basis. Most of us have become conditioned to respond, both behaviorally and emotionally, in certain ways due to past experiences or environments. Some have even endured significant past trauma that may still be affecting their present lives.

Talk therapy is a useful tool for many and it often can help clients reach new levels of insight into their lives and relationships with others. However for some, alternatives are needed. Each client is unique and my aim is to create an individually tailored approach to treatment. Many people may not be able, or simply may not want to access feelings/cognitions right away, and it can be helpful to start in the body. Treatment is often most effective when the body is part of the healing process. In my practice, I hope to teach clients the “language of their bodies.” Emotions and trauma are often stored or trapped in the body. Yoga and other mindfulness techniques can be used to help clients reconnect with their bodies, giving them an opportunity to have a present moment experience both physically and emotionally. As a psychotherapist and yoga practitioner I will give my clients tools to re-inhabit their bodies in a new way. Sessions will be client centered and can start with talking and lead into movement; start with movement and lead into talking; integrate movement and talking together – or just focus on movement alone. I hope to be able to provide an experience that is most useful for the client – which can change on any given day, or even within the session itself.

Specialize in Helping Successfull, Stressed, Professionals
In 2001 Solutions & Results emerged from my commitment to develop an independent therapy center with integrity, focused on emotional development and transformation. We provide individual psychotherapy, coaching, couples therapy, group therapy and executive and organizational development. I specialize in helping successful, stressed professionals and executives to maximize their potential. There are many reasons people seek therapy, coaching or counseling. I understand how difficult it can be if you are experiencing any of the following and I have helped many people with: Low Energy Anxiety Sadness Stress Loneliness Self-esteem problems Crises Career Issues Marital and other relationship problems Grief Anger Or maybe you know you just don't feel quite right. I can help. We will explore your experience together in a safe, compassionate, and caring setting. Robert Hartford is a Systems-Centered Therapist (SCT). SCT* uses specific techniques to help achieve results. Being the only Licensed SCT* Therapist in DC and the surrounding area, means that when you join my private practice, you will get special attention. You will be part of an exclusive group of clientele, learning specialized techniques unique to SCT*. You can expect to get high level, sensitive, quality care, so you can progress and not be stuck in therapy forever. Choosing the right therapist is one of the most important things for successful therapy outcome. But it isn't anything about the therapist per se, that makes that so. What matters most is that the two of you are a good fit. The right relationship is what makes the difference. So come ... explore ... and see if this is the fit that works for you. Together we will uncover your hopes and dreams, identify the obstacles and discover ways to reduce them, allowing for the possibility of turning your potential into reality. I have heard it time and time again: "I've wanted to do this for a long time but I just didn't want to admit something was wrong with me. Now that I'm here, I realize it is not that something is wrong with me, I just want something more". Therapy does not mean you're broken; it is a tool for personal growth. If you want to gain awareness and learn more about you and your potential for increased wellness and fulfillment, therapy or coaching can give you the tools. SCT* and The Theory of Living Human Systems, developed by Yvonne Agazarian, finds that by reducing the constraints that prevent growth and development, energy is free to lead toward transformation. Don't expect to lie on the couch; this is not cookie cutter therapy and I will do more than just listen, say "yes", "hum", or "tell me more about that". I work along with you, using specialized methods and specific techniques to ensure you'll receive an excellent standard of personalized service. So when you join my private practice, you get my complete attention and focus on your situation so you can reach your goals over time. When you come aboard with me, be assured you'll get more than your typical psychotherapy. Psychotherapy can often lead to: more fulfilling relationships better understanding of yourself significant reduction in feelings of distress better control over life situations solutions to specific problems lessening of depressive symptoms healing of emotional wounds increased life skills reduction of anxiety greater self-confidence a rise in self-esteem better moods In July 2012 Robert was selected as a presenter for the 18th International Congress in Cartagena de Indias, Columbia. Robert received training with Rebecca Jorgensen. "Working with Couples: Comparing Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Systems-Centered Theoretical and Clinical Approaches" at the SCT* Conference in San Francisco.

As a licensed psychologist in private practice for more than 25 years, I have been able to offer a wide range of help to over 1000 clients in their efforts to make their professional and personal lives more satisfying, productive, and healthier. I have advanced training and experience in working with adults as well as couples and families. My training background is in the area of cognitive-behavioral theory and therapy, which serves as a guide for clients to examine how problematic thoughts, emotions, and behavioral patterns interact and interfere with one's life. While it is true that expressing one's feelings can be helpful, in itself this does not necessarily lead to improvement. In addition, developing insight into the origins of one's problems, although helpful, doesn't lead to significant, practical improvement. Research studies do show that clients improve more rapidly and for longer periods of time if they consistently and systematically apply targeted therapeutic strategies in their daily lives. Some of the more common therapeutic strategies I incorporate into treatment include strategies to learn to: ---respond to negative, self-defeating thoughts with alternative, more positive and practical ideas; ---breakdown overwhelming problems into manageable ones, prioritizing them, and learning to make decisions about what to do first; ---conquer fear by actually doing things you've been afraid of trying; ---assert yourself in a variety of professional and personal situations (learning to say no appropriately; learning to ask effectively for what you want); ---improve one's social effectiveness (talking in front of groups of people); ---manage skills of intimacy that allow trust as well as boundary setting to be valued and established. Specific treatment problem areas include: Anxiety & Panic Disorders Assertiveness Deficits Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) Bipolar or Manic Depression Depression Grief and Loss Issues Marital or Relationship problems Insomnia Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Parenting difficulties Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Schizophrenia Self-Esteem Issues Clinical services are available by appointment to adults 18 years or older. I am on most insurance panels for mental health including: Aetna; Blue Cross/Blue Shield; Cigna; Great-West; Magellan; Managed Health Network; Medicare; Pacificare PPO; Private Health Care Systems; United Behavioral Health.

I enjoy helping people improve the quality of their life whether it is a relationship or other stressor that causes pain and anxiety. I trust that when people are connected to their own feelings, needs, and heart, the problems they face are manageable and less intrusive. Solutions become possible and creative. I assist individuals and groups in improving communication skills based on a model of non-violent communication developed by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg. My speciality is in couple counseling, divorce, relationship issues, communication skill development, anger management, parenting, life adjustments, work stress, bereavement including the loss of a child, childhood trauma recovery, depression, anxiety and panic disorder, PTSD, codependency, mediation, meditation, mind/body connection, women's issues and spirituality. Since I am trained in heart centered meditation, I can assist people who seek to recover from long standing issues more so than regular talk therapy. I apply Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to evaluate old long standing beliefs to bring it to present time circumstances.
