Therapy/Counseling and Addictions Counseling
For Adults and Adolescents
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Psychiatric Technician, and Masters level Addictions Counselor in Pasadena, California. Since 1984, I’ve been providing mental health services for adults and adolescents in both inpatient and/or outpatient settings. As such, I have a varied experience with abuse, trauma, depression, grief/loss, issues of personal growth, relationships, stress, and mental illness. During that time I have also worked extensively with addictions (of all types) and related issues (“co-dependency”, eating disorders, alcoholism, dual diagnosis…). My responsibilities have ranged from Licensed Psychiatric Technician (where much of my experience in mental health and medications comes from), to Program Director. Currently I am in private practice, life coaching, teaching, providing clinical supervision to prelicensed therapists, providing some staff training and consultation.

Help for Trauma, Relationships, Anxiety, Eating Disorders
It's hard to be objective when you feel stuck. In psychotherapy, I help people take a step back. As a trauma therapist for 25 years, working in Toronto, I do counseling and therapy for people dealing with the results of painful relationships. I help people develop goals and make changes in their lives. Adults and adolescents see me when they're having conflicts in their important family relationships, when they've experienced trauma, loss, or divorce, when they have posttraumatic symptoms from interpersonal trauma, when they are in psychological distress at work, home, or school, and when they are struggling with an eating disorder or severe anxiety. You can see more by checking out Dr. Robert T. Muller's award-winning psychotherapy work: "Trauma and the Avoidant Client: Attachment-Based Strategies for Healing" (published in 2010 by W.W. Norton) and "Trauma and the Struggle to Open Up: From Avoidance to Recovery and Growth" (published in 2018 by W.W. Norton).

Couple and Individual Therapy
I welcome individuals and couples from traditional, non-traditional, heterosexual and lgbtq ifestyles who live in the Northern California Bay Area. My areas of specialization are EMDR for trauma resolution and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. I am Certified as an EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA ( the EMDR International Association) and Certified as an Emotionally l Focused Therapist by ICEEFT ( The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy). My style reflects a synthesis of cognitive, body-centered (somatic), emotionally focused and psychodynamic approaches to couples, individual and group therapy. INDIVIDUAL THERAPY: Many people who suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, symptoms of trauma or relationship struggles also grapple with negative core beliefs about themselves. Some of the common negative core beliefs include: I'm a bad person, I'll always get it wrong, I'm defective, It's my fault, I'll never feel safe, I'm helpless, I'm stuck and I don't have any choices. Those beliefs usually come from a time when we were profoundly overwhelmed by a frightening, chaotic or unpredictable situation. A type of therapy called EMDR which stands for ( Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be a way to turn around those beliefs and create a new adaptive way of seeing oneself that is grounded in a healthy adaptive adult view of reality. In addition to EMDR, I often incorporate body-centered ( somatic) therapy. Somatic therapy is a way to study how we form our habitual body-based patterns- some of which work very well and others that are not working so well in relation to ourselves and others. In the process, we can learn how to create new ways of organizing ourselves in a muscular-skeletal way that result in greater options and choices in how we live our lives. COUPLES and FAMILY THERAPY: One of my specializations is Emotionally Focused Therapy- an evidenced-based approach to helping couples and families tap into their emotions ( the good, the bad and the ugly) and create a solid foundation for deep, resilient, intimate emotional healing and connection based on trust and understanding.

Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. How I work: First we will have an introductory conversation on the phone. I will gain preliminary understanding of the problem you need help with. I am a private practicioner accepting most insurances as well as cash and credit cards.. I see adults, children, & adolescents for a variety of emotional and behavior issues. I utilize several modalities of treatment including Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Solution-Focused therapy, Play theapy, and Sandtray therapy. I mostly work with individuals but also work with their families. I work with all ages of patients who have lost a loved one recently or not so recently to work with them on the grief process. There are all ages of patients who are experiencing a mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder that I see to help them utilize skills to cope with and change their patterns of thoughts. Many ages of patients also experience anxiety that I assist in teaching them anxiety skills management. Many children and adolescents struggle with some sort of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and I work with them on strengthening their executive functioning skills like increasing attention and focus, decreasing impulsivity, etc. I also teach the parents skills to assist their child. Many of the children or adolescents I work with have an emotional or behavioral disorder. I am currently working on a play therapist certification. The above are just a few of the many issues I have worked with during the last 23 + years of experience. I have also worked with people who have eating disorders, relationship conflicts, job stress/issues, adults and children experiencing divorce issues, substance abuse, compulsive gambling, gender identity issues, selective mutism, sensory processing disorders, attachment issues, etc.

I have helped couples struggling with infidelity and the aftermath of an affair to learn how to rebuild their trust again. I have been helping men and women overcome anger, stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, compulsive behaviors, alcohol and substance abuse and sexual problems. I have helped literally hundreds of people create better, more satisfying lives. I would like to help you as well. Call or email me for a free telephone consultation. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression, substance abuse and stress related problems. I work quickly to reduce distress or panic. I started my career as a teacher and spent a number of years working with kids of all ages. From teaching I entered the corporate world, working with large companies and learning their methods of operation. I then became an entrepreneur and began building my own businesses. I created and grew three companies over a 20-year period and learned firsthand what it takes to deal with the enormous stress of maintaining high performance, good leadership and being your own boss.

Letting go of yesterday - Rethinking your way of thinking
Taking Action -Transformation- Change -A New Day!
Dawn of a New Day’s mission is to offer holistic care whenever and wherever it can in helping to serve the needs of our people. We feel one way of accomplishing this is by offering counseling services at very affordable rates. Whether you are seeking help with difficult family issues, parent-child relationship issues, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, preparing for marriage, researching career options or repairing an important relationship, Pastoral counseling and psychotherapy can provide answers and insights. By integrating a thorough understanding of God's Word with counseling methods and techniques that have been developed and proven to be effective we will work in collaboration with you to help you overcome your difficulties . The Difference Between Counseling and Psychotherapy As we work with you we may involve one or both of these approaches depending on the problems and goals you present. We need to remember that insight does not necessarily lead to change. It can provide some relief to understand about why we’re the way we are but it takes creative thinking and action to make changes. The Aim: Transformation by letting go of yesterday, taking action to rethink your ways of thinking to achieve a wonderful change in your life!

When life gives you lemons ... what do you do? Whether you believe we choose our own circumstances, that there is a master plan, or that sometimes sh*t happens, you still have reactions, feelings, and decisions to make about "what next?" It is NOT YOUR FAULT you have problems stemming from your past, and it IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to create your future. If you knew HOW to do that, you would probably not be looking for a therapist! I will help you design a positive life, REGARDLESS OF YOUR HISTORY. I trust and respect your ability to make good choices and decisions, when you are able to pay attention to your inner voice, your sense of who you are at the core. I will help you discover, re-discover, or create your true self, so that problems in your life become opportunities for growth. I sometimes conduct sessions that are not framed by the clock, working with individuals or couples until a natural stopping point. This flexible scheduling allows for resolution and re-direction in a more time-friendly manner. I help couples learn to value and appreciate the differences that have been driving them apart, and to regain the loving feelings that brought them together. I help those with a medical condition deal with the anger, depression, frustration, and other feelings that are associated with illness, and I also provide a safe place for their family members or significant others to deal with their own feelings and concerns. My office has a calming, Zen atmosphere, a soothing and pleasant environment. I am no longer on any insurance panels. If you wish, I provide statements for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement of a percentage of fees.

Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens. CARL JUNG (1875-1961) HOW DOES TALK THERAPY WORK? There is a writers’ saying: “How can I know what I think until I see what I say?” This is called shaping at the point of utterance. This principle applies powerfully to psychotherapy. Discussing your thoughts, feelings, emotions, conflicts and problems with another person is usually of great help. If that person is caring, professionally trained, smart, sensitive and objective, then talking with that person and exploring your difficulties and concerns can be of tremendous assistance. Airing your thinking aloud with a professional, focused, detached and yet compassionate second ear, can help you to unpack your emotions, rethink chronic problems and worries, and live more consciously. It can give you clarity and allow you to see things in a new light. The next time you find yourself depressed; anxious; creatively blocked; in conflict with your mate or family or children; or engaging in an unhealthy behavior like reaching for a drink, fattening food, or a drug, you may be better able to comprehend why you are driven to do so, and make conscious some connections that were previously unconscious. What just happened to trigger the feeling or behavior? Why did it happen then? And most important: must it always happen like that or can you do something to prevent such deleterious behaviors from recurring? Self-awareness and understanding are the necessary first steps to turning injurious behaviors around. Real change can only follow self-understanding. And it is such genuine

Mindset: Inspiration for the process of therapy can be drawn from one of the best movie quotes of all time, “No! Try not! Do or Do Not, There is no try.” These are very powerful words telling people, especially to those in therapy that you must either willingly make your own necessary and sometimes critical changes in your life or you don’t. Therapy is about actively regaining control of your personal energy. Therapy is a collaborative approach to healing and well-being between a client and therapist. The therapist helps guide a person into making better life decisions, but the client must intuitively think of new ways of managing their life stressors that they are comfortable starting and maintaining. Clients not willing to make changes for themselves will continue to spin helplessly and hopelessly out of control. The mind is constantly changing; people in therapy must also learn to continually adjust and adapt to new situations while keeping a mindful-eye on their past. Education and Training: Dr. Hurley received his Master of Arts (MA) in General and Theoretical Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in Teaneck, New Jersey. He graduated with a Doctoral Degree (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology at Forest Institute of Professional Psychology (FIPP) in Springfield, Missouri. At FIPP Dr. Hurley specialized in Marriage and Family Counseling. Other areas of training include neuro-psychology, anger management, bio-feedback, and pre-marital counseling. During his doctoral program he worked in a children’s psychiatric hospital. His internship was in community mental health, and he participated in a national study on Schizophrenia. Dr. Hurley’s post-doc residency was in substance abuse and rehabilitation. After his post-doc residency he spent two years in private practice in Libertyville, IL. Dr. Hurley then became the medical director for a Chicago based firm doing home health care delivering mental health therapy to Chicago’s south-side geriatric African-American population who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Dr. Hurley has taught undergraduate students at Robert Morris College in Aurora, IL and graduate students at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He finds teaching to be a change of pace and a way of leading a new generation of therapists into the Health Services Industry. His career path changed when he moved to Knoxville, TN. Dr. Hurley was the Clinical Director for Mental Health for Tennessee’s main intake prison facility. He worked with various criminals making sure that they received the help they needed and to minimize suicide attempts. Dr. Hurley’s stance on his education, training, and career is to always strive to learn more, to do more, and to be the best therapist possible. Therapeutic Stance: My approach to therapy with my clients is multi-faceted. There is no one therapy to fit all. I like to approach issues from a psycho-dynamic, family systems, CBT, Gestalt, existential, and medical stance. When dealing with mental health disorders you have to consider the mind as well as the body for the root of a problem. Therapy needs to be understandable by those who seek help and I have spent years refining my technique to help clients understand the issues they’re facing and the theories on how to resolve said issues. People feel more comfortable and understood if you can talk to them in the various places they are currently. I love to see individuals, couples, and groups in a calm, peaceful, and most importantly neutral environment. I love to make presentations to groups for psycho-educational purposes as well.

There is always hope . . .
I provide a sale and comfortable environment in which to work on any issues that may be causing you emotional pain or anxiety. I believe that when you are able to accept yourself right where you are that change begins to happen. After a successful intern practice of five years, I am now licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist as well as a Certified Hypnotherapist. I work with individuals, couples and families on a variety of issues including: depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, grief and loss, anger management, relationship counseling, loneliness, life transitions and abuse. I also work with victims of crime through the local District Attorney's Office. Sometimes life can be overwhelming but it is our reaction to life that often affects our mental state. Many of us tend to compensate for high stress levels by overreacting, overeating or even self-medicating. These actions only exacerbate the situation. Working together, we can come up with better solutions to alleviate stress and help manage your life in a healthy way. Anger management., addiction recovery, and hypnosis for weight loss are a some of the ways in which I can help.

Assisting Individuals Through Life's Transitions
I provide individual counseling, couples and family counseling and group counseling. I am also a supervisor for interns seeking licensure as Mental Health Counselors for the state of Florida. I prefer to use a brief, solution-focused model and utilize cognitive-behavioral techniques. I also enjoy incorporating art, music, poetry, journaling and play to enhance the therapeutic process. Knowing that each person is an individual, I use the most appropriate interventions and techniques for the situations and issues presented. I understand that the faster an issue is processed, the less impact the events will have on a person in the long-term. I understand that each person who seeks help wants to be heard and I am honored to provide that support.
