Therapy Services for Couples, Individuals, and Families
We are a group of licensed clinical marriage and family therapists who are committed to providing high quality therapy services for couples, families, individuals and groups. We see many different types of client issues, including but not limited to couples communication, anxiety, depression, anger, family and stepfamily difficulties, and premarital preparation. I have been in full-time private practice for over 10 years. As marriage and family therapists, my staff and I are specially trained to deal with the context between and around clients, in addition to whatever might be going on for them individually. My personal commitment is to provide a safe and welcoming environment in which we can help move clients from where they are struggling and challenged to personal growth, happiness, and greater connection with the ones they love. My relationship with my clients not only includes helping them in the crisis moments, but also being available throughout life for whatever may come up - many return to therapy for "tune-ups" at different points in their lives. I'm honored to be someone they feel safe enough with to return at those times when they need someone to listen. If this sounds like something that might be of help to you, please give us a call at 301-563-9520, or email us at info@laurelfay.com. We look forward to working with you.

Why Wait to Have the Life You Want?
REMOTE SESSIONS DURING CORONAVIRUS: PHONE OR ONLINE
OVERVIEW Together we look at your life to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. We’ll see who you are, the relationships you’re in, and what stops you from having the life you want. We’ll see how you act, think, feel, and relate to others today and how those have been affected by your life experiences. We’ll work to change things so your life does work for you. TRAUMA You may feel anxious, depressed, or alienated. Here you can feel safe, talk honestly about what happened and about how it still affects you, even when other people don't understand or can't stand to hear it any more. I help you understand why you’re reacting as you do, even when you may feel out of control or a little "crazy." You'll learn ways to work through the psychological and emotional impact of what happened so you can get your life back. If you or your family member is a victim of violent crime, you may be eligible for therapy at no cost to you. ADDICTIONS (Substances and Behaviors) You might have difficulty with alcohol or drugs, or you may need help evaluating if that’s true, how great the difficulty is, or what you can do about it. You may also be asking similar questions about sexual behaviors or compulsions, porn, gambling, Internet usage, spending, eating, cutting, or anything else you do that feels questionable or out of control. Some people feel like they are addicted to another person, what sometimes is referred to as "love addiction." GAY/LESBIAN/BISEXUAL ISSUES While I work with heterosexuals, I also work with many gay, bisexual, or lesbian people, both individually and in couples. If you’re in a process of self-discovery, you’ll be the one to decide what your sexual orientation and identity is. If you’re now coming out, together we can consider if, when, how, and with whom you decide to do it. If you’re clear and comfortable with your sexual orientation, I can give you safe place where you can be open about who you and how HIV has impacted your life or your relationships MIND/BODY The mind and body are functionally identical. What you think affects how you feel, and what you feel affects how think. I work at both levels, with people who are interested in doing that. For people who aren't interested in the this work, I am happy to stay strictly in a talk-therapy mode. YOU SET THE COURSE, AND I'LL HELP YOU GET THERE. I am an active participant in each treatment and will work relationally with you to address your concerns. My experience living and working in other cultures has helped to expand my understanding of the human condition and greatly inform my practice of psychology. I enjoy incorporating Eastern techniques, such as mindfulness meditation, alongside Western approaches, especially cognitive psychology to assist my clients in their journeys to minimize suffering and maximize life satisfaction. Psychotherapy is something that almost everyone can benefit from. As we travel through life we accumulate many experiences. Some of these experiences may adversely affect our functioning beyond what would seem normal. Some of these experiences and biological situations may create psychological conditions. To understand how these experiences and may be affecting you and develop strategies to better cope with and recover from them psychotherapy can be very beneficial. Please consider how valuable your quality of life and functioning are and be proactive in improving your life. I am happy working with adults and couples as well as with children and adolescents and their families. I have helped these people to succeed in their efforts to overcome, better manage or adjust to their depression, anxiety, trauma, anger, compulsions, obsessions, addictions, relationship problems, sexual orientation, identity issues, thought disorders, sleep disorders and stress. In my work with couples and parents, I place a strong emphasis on accountability as essential to improvement in relationships. I often will work on an individual basis with both members of a couple, as well as seeing them together. This allows me a comprehensive understanding of all contributing factors in a couple's problems.I have the ability not to "take sides" in couple or family problems. The result has been a high success rate in my family and marital therapy. In my work with children, I always evaluate a child's problem in the context of the family system. Parents need to be willing to be involved in the treatment. Sometimes I will meet only with the parents, with excellent results.

For Doing Life and Relationships Well
Relationships are essential to our overall health and well-being. Good connections develop and strengthen us, and are a source of encouragement and resilience in the face of life's difficulties and setbacks. Difficult connections are painful and can impair and even immobilize us. So it's important to attend to how we interact with others and find ways to improve the quality of our relational life. I focus on finding ways of developing healthier and more satisfying relationships with the significant people in your life. Whether it’s your spouse, partner, friend, co-worker, or a family member, they matter. Difficulty in any one of them can lead to anxiety, depression, or just feeling stuck and confused. The solutions include understanding and improving your attachment style, personal boundaries, and developing skills for more effective communication, conflict resolution and problem solving. My approach integrates the psychological, relational, and spiritual dimensions of life that leads to making good choices for self-care and healthy connections.

I use traditional "talk therapy" to meet you where you are while applying the techniques of mindfulness based stress reduction, cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal neurobiology and other approaches to help you uncover your authentic self and ultimately reach your optimum potential. I believe that no one understands your experience as well as you do. I also believe real growth and positive change are most possible when a person feels safe and supported. For that reason, I strive to create an honest, sincere, non-judgmental and personable environment for the purposes of counseling and therapy. Autism and Asperger's are my specialties. I have over 15 years of clinical experience working with Children, Teens and Adults with ASD. I also provide counseling and support for parents and family members who are caring for a loved one with ASD and conduct workshops on academic skill development. I offer Social Awareness and Confidence Group for Children, Teens and Adults. Groups are intentionally small (no more than 3 in a group) and carefully selected to ensure a good fit for all. Rates for groups are much lower than individual therapy.

Life is a Journey, sometimes you need a Guide
Often psychotherapy is thought of as admitting failure - that you are unable to work out your own problems or just for crazy people. We are never taught the skills we need in relationships, how to process feelings about past events or make changes in our lives that will get us beyond a frustrating situation. Life and psychotherapy are processes. I feel that therapy is a process through which healing occurs and we discover meaning and purpose through which we become who we potentially are. There is no one right answer, there is only your answer that therapy can help you to discover. As a therapist I believe that deep inside every being is an innate wise core Self that can help one reach our potential. But often we are too distracted by our external environment to hear the voice of the Self or the Soul. In therapy it is important to address the whole person. I look for the potential in each person and help him or her to see it in as a beacon toward which to grow. Changing behavior is important, but I believe that change comes from the inside out. We need to believe in ourselves, our potential and find meaning and purpose in life that motivates us toward greater awareness, greater participation in life and greater appreciation of the opportunity life offers us for growth and fulfillment. I feel it is important to integrate spiritual beliefs into everyday life so that we act in relationships in a way that is consistent with what we believe and that we live our lives by the philosophy of our souls. This is important to our happiness and health and when we nurture our souls we contribute to the well being of family, friends, the workplace, society and our planet. Trauma, abuse and violence where trust and safety have been violated affect one’s ability to have and sustain relationships that are satisfying and nurturing. I work with victims of crime and abuse that is physical, sexual, verbal and emotional. This includes trauma recovery and healing. I also work with serious illness, death and dying and grief and bereavement. I work with all ages and address relationship problems within families, couples and groups in therapy. I have specialized experience, knowledge and training in “Spiritual Emergence / Emergency” in its many forms. I have a Transpersonal theoretical orientation, and work with creativity, intuition and spiritual experiences. I have training and knowledge in hypnosis, spirituality, parapsychology, consciousness, dreams, meditation, relaxation and visualization and Psychoneuroimmunology.

I often tell my clients they are doing a nice thing for themselves by going to psychotherapy. One does not need to wait for a difficulty to arise as a motivator to enter therapy. Participating in therapy sessions can bring greater in-depth personal exploration and better, more fulfilling relationships with others. My practice is composed mainly of adults seeking help with anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties including sexual issues and dysfunctions. The therapeutic approach I frequently use is cognitive-behavioral which focuses on anxiety/depression and relational/interpersonal which focuses on creating healthy relationship dynamics. I actively work with clients who are facilitators of their change. What is unique about my practice is that I bring a wealth of personal experiences as an individual with a hearing loss and have had anxiety issues. Having these challenges ground me to be a more sensitive and caring person with an enhanced understanding of anyone who steps into my office.

Healing Complex Trauma:
Fear, Shame, Stuckness
Complex trauma is a relatively newer concept referring to our adaptive development around ongoing or repeating childhood abuse, neglect, or abandonment. It is very common, and because it involves entangled parts and beliefs, healing requires specific approaches that instill a sense of felt safety in the body before processing old traumas. Where most of us develop structures to protect us from the uncomfortable parts of life, in therapy we are developing an ability to meet all parts of self with presence and compassion.

Holistic Therapist, Looking Forward to
Challenging Cases from People Needing My Expertise
I am a holistic therapist, looking forward to challenging cases from people needing my expertise. Making use of a wide variety of therapies, from verbal to non-verbal, devoting much time on each of the select cases I take, and engaging in colleague consultations, I am often able to help with even the most difficult of issues. I also see children, doing family therapy even for the toughest kids. You'll see the difference family support makes, rather than my just trying to "fix the kid". I often begin with symptom-focused behavioral counseling to attempt rapid symptom improvement. When people stay beyond that brief initial period of basic counseling, we move into long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy to find and remedy the problem’s root cause. I encourage people to call me and we can talk about what your particular issues are and how I will be able to help you out. Or, if there is something I can't help you with, I will help you find the best regional expert for your issue.

Testing allows for a better understanding of an individual’s intellectual, behavioral and emotional development. The information generated through an evaluation is designed to help better understand individual strengths and weaknesses and to identify how to best address problems that individuals might be having. Psychological testing may assist in risk assessment determinations, treatment recommendations, and determinations with regard to parenting time and custody. The process of psychological testing consists of information gathering from multiple sources. The psychologist will interview the individual and potentially members of their family to gain information about developmental history and current concerns. Previous evaluations and assessments are reviewed and other treatment providers may be consulted. With proper consent, information may be collected from schools, law enforcement agencies and any other relevant sources of information to gain a full and accurate clinical picture. In addition, clinical testing and behavioral observations will occur. Tests may include assessments to determine intellectual functioning (I.Q.), academic achievement, memory, attention, executive functioning, personality testing, risk level and emotional functioning. The tests will be selected to answer the specific questions identified by the individual and the psychologist.

Through the exploration of yourself and your relationships through awareness, honesty, integrity, and vulnerability you can transform and move past your limiting patterns and beliefs. I offer sessions both indoors and outside in local natural areas to help you start moving forward from the start. Experienced, caring and trained therapist who provides therapy that is evidence based and backed up by research to be effective for anxiety, depression, addiction, post postpartum, anger management, grief and loss and other areas of mental health. First and foremost I work from a person centred approach and incorporate narrative therapy, mindfulness and brief solution focused therapy. Telling our stories of grief, pain, love and triumph can release the grip they may have on us or build us up as we so deserve. I also utilize aspects of cognitive behavioural therapy throughout my sessions as our thought processes can strongly impact our story writing and how we interpret ours and other’s stories.

Abundant Life Realized
I have lived, played, and worked in Seattle and the Puget Sound Region since 2002. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor I work as a full-time Therapist in Seattle and Redmond. I received a Masters in Counseling and Certificate in DV Advocacy from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology in December 2006. In my counseling practice I come from two primary perspectives. The first perspective is that examining the themes and stories of my past will enhance my ability to lead a healthy and fulfilling life today. Stories about our families, caregivers, schools, friends, breakups, successful relationships and abusive ones all can have power in the here and now. In other words I strongly promote the idea of the examined life as the quickest and surest way to happiness and fulfillment. The second perspective I bring to my practice is as follows. There really is no point to doing 'therapy' if I am currently not living a life where my basic needs are being met. Sudden tragedy, compulsive behaviors and addictions, financial stresses, changing careers, and other significant "disruptions" can all be reasons to seek help from therapy. Emergent issues and basic needs will be addressed first and foremost.

I created Hope & Healing For Life PLLC as a place where individuals and families could come to find hope in their ability to heal from current struggles. Having worked for agencies for the last several years, I felt that it was time to create an environment that operates on the principles of true client centered care. It is important to me to have an atmosphere where people can feel comfortable, and empowered in the healing process, while at the same time developing goals, and strategies for successful treatment. I can show you, your family, or your organization why this partnership will work, depending on your specific needs and circumstances.
