Transformative Healing: A Journey Toward Meaning
Compassionate Care for Grief and Trauma Recovery
Dr. Matthew Paldy I work with individuals and couples suffering from grief, trauma, and emotional wounds that often lie beneath everyday functioning. My practice is grounded in a depth-oriented, relational approach that honors both conscious experience and the powerful, often unspoken forces of the unconscious. My work is shaped by two guiding principles: * Deep Listening: A psychoanalytic approach that helps you understand how loss, trauma, and early experiences live on inside you—shaping your feelings, relationships, and sense of self. * Trauma-Informed Care: A sensitive, attuned, and collaborative process that respects the impact of trauma on the body, mind, and relationships. Together, our work can help you: Process grief, loss, and traumatic experiences that may feel overwhelming, frozen, or unresolved. Make sense of emotional pain that can feel confusing, isolating, or impossible to put into words. Reconnect with your inner strengths, capacities, and capacity for meaning, even in the aftermath of suffering. I engage with the whole of who you are—your thoughts, emotions, memories, relationships, and hopes for the future. I see therapy as a shared journey in which you are not alone with your pain. It is deeply meaningful to accompany my clients as they mourn, heal, and gradually rediscover connection, purpose, and vitality in their lives. My approach is grounded in clinical expertise, lived human understanding, and deep respect for how difficult grief and trauma can be. My hope is that together we can better understand your story, give voice to what has been silenced, and help you move forward in ways that feel authentic, safe, and meaningful.

Interactive & Solution-Focused Psychotherapy for Change
Imagine having the tools to explain clearly to your partner how you feel about something he/she said or didn't say… Imagine being able to speak to your children in a way that conveys how much you love them, but also firmly establishes limits and boundaries… Imagine the relief in being able to acknowledge, both to yourself and to another person in a safe, confidential therapeutic setting, feelings of hatred and rage toward someone in your life... Imagine being able to clearly and confidently state, "I want my future in 10 years to look like…." and having a mapped out plan to achieve it... We all have struggles. It takes courage to decide to take ourselves off "auto-pilot" and to confront and work through our problems. It takes courage to decide we are ready to look at ourselves, at our patterns of interacting in relationships and in decision-making. By deciding to look into therapy, you have taken the very difficult first step in this process…. I am a licensed psychologist practicing in Manhattan and in Great Neck, Long Island for 10+ years. I work with my patients using an interactive, supportive, and compassionate approach to help them to better understand and manage issues related to: Anxiety Depression Conflicted Relationships Parenting Struggles Work/Career Conflict Trauma Grief Stress/Anger Management Identity Issues Eating and Body Image We cannot erase negative past experiences. We can, however, work together to help you to better understand and to respond to these experiences in more constructive ways. Using a variety of solution-focused and insight-oriented therapeutic approaches, I will help you to become more aware of your long standing, negative behavioral patterns which are getting in your way of resolving challenges and of establishing and meeting your goals in life. In doing so, you will be better equipped to enact changes that will lead to greater happiness and a sense of well-being. Feel free to call me for a consultation.

Psychotherapy for Feeling Better
Perhaps you want to expand your life, have richer and less problematic relationships, do work that is more gratifying and more engaging of your creativity. In short, you want a better life, and it's begun to feel as if time is passing you by. In therapy, you and I will work together so you may develop the courage to stand behind yourself, while also enjoying intimate relationships. We will find ways of listening to your deepest voice. The goal is to help you gain inner freedom--the freedom to be yourself, to love genuinely, and to do your best work. Incessant self-questioning and self-doubt can be exhausting. How do we change the attitudes and patterns that keep us stuck? Contemporary brain science has brought a lot to the therapy table. We now know how to teach people, through their own mental efforts, how to change the structure of their brains so that it can begin to function in new and healthier ways. Consider these negative, or self-doubting ideas: I'm too old to be single. I'm too self conscious to take a dance class (or work out in a gym). I've missed my chance in life. I don't look good enough to attract someone. These are false thoughts, and people spend years of their lives believing them. Even when they know they're dysfunctional and rob them of joy in life, they're convinced these negative ideas are impossible to get rid of. They're not. We have many new techniques and methodologies to help patients change their negative negative thought processes and begin feeling about themselves in entirely new ways. One method that I use with my patients is called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Big mouthful, I know, but it's actually a very straight forward way of helping people re-process their negative thinking. During EMDR therapy the patient attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. I use an audio device that produces pleasant tones (they go back and forth from the left ear to the right, via headphones.) The patient listens to the tones while thinking about a fear or an unpleasant or even frightening experience. Every minute or so I check in to see how the patient is feeling and what she or he is thinking. This way we can both monitor what's happening in the patient's mind . We can also introduce new and more positive ways of thinking about the material the brain is working on. In my practice I've found that EMDR can produce marked mental/emotional improvement in a relatively brief period of time. Sometimes the effects of trauma make it hard to trust others. Sometimes depression drains us of emotional energy. I am trained to treat trauma, anxiety and depression. The patient's ability to feel safe in my office comes first. We work together in an atmosphere of warmth and calm. This is the patient's journey. I will listen deeply to your words and feelings and perceptions, and help us toward a deeper understanding of who you are and where you want to be in life. Blending conventional and alternatives approaches to therapy, I draw on a variety of styles and techniques, incorporating what is most helpful to the individual. EMDR is one tool I use. I also teach patients special breathing techniques for calming anxiety and being able to regulate their emotions. Once they've learned different mindfulness techniques people become able to regulate overwhelming or flooding emotions, whether it be fear, or rage, or irritability, or sadness. It's very empowering when the brain can tame emotions.

Free your mind. Free your life.
You can learn to honor your pain/struggle without suffering.
My favorite author once wrote, “It is the peculiar nature of the world to go on spinning no matter what sort of heartbreak is happening,” which inevitably means that there are times in everyone’s life when living becomes too heavy, complicated, confusing, painful and/or difficult to manage. I, personally, know that feeling all too well. But what if you could learn to honor and express your heartbreak, your pain and your struggle without suffering through it or allowing it to control you? What if you could learn to manage the stress of tomorrow by choosing to live mindfully today? Pain is inevitable and often uncontrollable, as we are all intensely experiencing now in the midst of COVID-19. I know it can feel unfair and overwhelming, but, while pain may be unavoidable, suffering is a choice based on how we process, cope, and react to challenges that life throws our way. Each of us has the power to choose differently and to create positive change. With the right guidance and support, you can learn to free your mind, and, in doing so, free your life. Passionate about fusing traditional psychotherapy with an integrative and holistic approach, I offer an opportunity to connect mind and body. I specialize in working with diverse individuals and families, especially teens and young adults who are experiencing anxiety and stress, relationship challenges, life transitions low self-esteem and depression.

"Therapist to the Therapy"
I am an empathic human being and a highly trained Certified Psychoanalyst, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Credentialed Alcoholism Counselor. I help others manage and resolve difficulties of the heart -- love, loss and work during significant life changes; for example, career change, death/illness in family, divorce, relapse with addiction(s), criminal arrests, loss of work, etc. I am committed to providing high-quality professional assessment and counseling/psychotherapy to people who have not accessed or have had prior unsatisfactory experiences with psychotherapy. I am also committed to travel the lengthy road of psychoanalysis with people who want to take this voyage. A second arm of my private practice is "Second Opinions": Some consumers are in a "stalemate" in their present "therapy"-- where there is a serious impasse and "work" is forfeited. I consult with individuals who can no longer productively work in their current therapy, oftentimes beginning to resolve major impasses. On occasion, the individual's therapist volunteers to be part of this process. In some cases, fruitful work is resumed. In other instances, a decision to leave the current therapy ensues. My interest in psychotherapy is borne by helping clients learn about themselves in seeing things differently—not changing their world, but having new eyes. By engaging in this process one finds obstacles in the past that impinge in reaching one’s full potential in the present. Psychotherapy is helpful in working through such issues by addressing the underlying emotions and bringing them into awareness. One may achieve a sense of inner peace and emotional freedom, making possible more fulfilling relationships with oneself and others. A third arm of my private practice is assistance to criminal defense attorneys specializing in high-profile white collar crime and DWI/DUIs. I have navigated the field of expert witness and prepared confidential psychiatric reports as well as prepleading memoranda to help individuals and their counsel have a win-win situation.
