Exploring Challenges & Strengths Through Lived Experiences
I love to help others explore challenges and strengths through the lens of their lived experiences. My goal is to create a space that fosters healing and growth without asking anyone to compromise who they are. As a Black therapist, I understand how culture, identity, and systemic factors shape the way we move through the world—and how those experiences show up in our mental health. I center my work on authenticity, compassion, and cultural humility, offering a therapeutic relationship where you can show up fully, without judgment. Whether you're navigating anxiety, grief, relationship challenges, or the complexities of being bicultural or underrepresented, I’m here to support you in reclaiming your voice and honoring your truth.

Psychotherapy for Adolescents and Adults
Help with Depression, Anxiety, and Eating Disorders
In my practice I provide psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. I focus on empirically validated treatments that science demonstrates work. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for problems including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. I am a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) through IAEDP. Eating Disorders Treatment I have special interest and expertise in the treatment of adult and adolescent eating disorders including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Body image issues. My approach to working with eating disorders is based on empirically validated treatments. I provide CBT to adults and older adolescents with eating disorders and family based therapy (Maudsley model) to adolescents with eating disorders. A course of CBT for bulimia is usually about 20 sessions. Family based therapy (FBT) usually consists of 20 treatment sessions over a course of 6 to 12 months. I work collaboratively with other treatment professionals and have a dietitian in my suite who is available to provide dietary counseling. Family Based Therapy for Anorexia and Bulimia (Maudsley) For adolescents with anorexia, the outpatient treatment of choice is Family-Based Treatment (FBT or Maudsley Approach). I am certified in Maudsley Family Based Treatment through the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders and am one of the only therapists in my area to have this certification. In this treatment, no one in the family is blamed for the development of the eating disorder. The symptoms are viewed as outside the child’s control and having taken on a life of their own. In contrast to traditional therapies, Maudlsey Family-Based Therapy enlists the support of parents and siblings and even extended family as resources in helping the adolescent battle the eating disorder. Treatment initially focuses on weight restoration, with the parents tasked with providing adequate nutrition for their child during family meals. The therapist supports the parents in this difficult task of refeeding and also models a non blaming stance that views the eating disorder as an external force that must be fought off by the family working together. In the second phase of treatment, once the child has gained weight and starts to exhibit more normal eating behaviors, the child is gradually given back more control over their own eating. In the last phase of treatment development and comorbid issues are addressed within the family context Adult Treatment Cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders was pioneered by Christopher Fairburn, MD in 1981 and has been updated several times, including a revision in 1993 co-authored by my mentor, Dr. Terence Wilson (Fairburn, C. G., Marcus, M.D., & Wilson, G. T. (1993). The most recent revision is an “enhanced” (CBT-E) protocol (Fairburn, Christopher G., 2008). A core issue in all eating disorders is overconcern with shape and weight. Cognitive behavioral therapy, which focuses on addressing the various behaviors, thoughts, and feelings that are components of this core overconcern, is particularly well-suited to treat eating disorders. Cognitive behavioral therapy also addresses general personality characteristics that maintain eating disorders. Cognitive behavioral therapy has become the leading evidence-based treatment for adults with eating disorders. It has been tested in numerous clinical trials and proven successful. Research studies indicate that about two-thirds of the patients who complete treatment have an excellent response. It can also be successfully employed with older adolescents with bulimia nervosa. Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses primarily on factors in the present that are keeping the eating disorder going. The therapist and client work collaboratively to understand the client’s problem and develop strategies to overcome it.

Serving the wellness and relationship needs of diverse (including interracial, LGBT) couples civilian and military. I provide counseling and coaching at your home or online. I also provide speaking, training, and consulting services for business, school, and military events and conferences in the areas of cultural diversity, relationship health, parenting, and child wellness. Care for Couples: The majority of same-gender relationships are oftentimes fatally vulnerable to social stresses. We will explore the unexamined, private, moment-to-moment messages that may be impeding connection and intimacy. We will examine the individual (and those of the relationship) developed patterns that act as a kind of immunization against the social toxins of society's stereotypes, prejudices, and outright discrimination. Most importantly help identify and manage the stressors that are experienced physiologically and psychologically that often causes tension and emotional dysfunction in relationships leading to emptiness, distance, and sometimes a complete breakdown of the partnership. Care for Adolescent Males: Counseling may be helpful for teens that are uncomfortable with aspects of their sexuality or uncertain about how to express it. They may benefit from support and the opportunity to clarify their feelings. Therapy may also help the teen adjust to personal, family, and school-related issues or conflicts that emerge. Therapy directed specifically at changing homosexual orientation is not recommended and may be harmful for an unwilling teen. It may create more confusion and anxiety by reinforcing the negative thoughts and emotions with which the child is already struggling. I provide culturally sensitive assessments and treatment to decrease misdiagnosis when considering behavioral, mood, and sexuality disorders of G/L/B/T adolescents. Two of the goals of treatment will be to decrease number of youth experimenting with drugs and alcohol in order to cope with the many stressors as they navigate through the cultural, social, hetero-biased, political, and religious landscapes towards self-actualization. HIV Care I offer collaborative client care to help men living with HIV to help them to continue working, make healthy lifestyle choices, eliminate behaviors that are detrimental to both their physical and mental health, and to improve quality of life and need for increased medications and hospitalization. Services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance or employee benefit plan. Call your human resources department at work or your current health insurance provider to ask: • If you have mental health insurance benefits? • What do you have to pay? • How many sessions are you covered for in a 12 month period? • What is the amount your insurance will pay per counseling/therapy session? • Do you have to get approval from your primary care physician before your insurance will pay for your counseling sessions?

Feminist Therapy Practice, Trauma Experts
Therapy Specialists! Expect More; Expect the Best! LATN
My practice is a unique type of practice. I am a firm believer that 2 heads are better than one. So, I have decided to form a group network of therapists who collaborate together to provide the best services that we can offer! We do more than just one therapist can do alone. I hired a team of licensed therapists who could work together, each offering a unique perspective, training and expertise, enabling us all to be able to provide you with better trained, skilled and experienced clinicians because we cross-train each other! We discuss case issues and collaborate to offer superior services to our clientele! For example, I am the owner and director of LA Therapy Network. I am a feminist therapist, have special knowledge and experience helping women in transitions and transitional ages, am expert in the treatment of trauma and trauma related syndromes, and I have over 25 years working with alternative families, adolescents, women and various sexual and gender variant communities. I am especially knowledgeable about women's issues, sex crimes, impact of sudden deaths, teen issues and the GLBTQI communities. I am trained in the treatment of extreme forms of trauma and chronic, repeated abuse/violence. If you are a person dealing with rape, incest or sexual abuse/violence for example, I am ideal therapist to contact. However I don't have as much experience in the treatment of couples, but I do have 2 therapists who are excellent at treating couples! So, if you are a gay male couple who is seeking a sensitive therapist who has an expertise in trauma you may seek me out. I will consult with my colleagues who treat couples to ensure that I am providing you with better care. I have ready access to therapists who are more knowledgeable and thus you benefit! Whereas if I were in practice on my own, you'd be left to getting only my knowledge and you'd have to hope I knew enough about what I was doing. This is really the truth about individual private practices. A therapist only is as good as his/her training. And let’s face it, there is only so much one can focus their training on. Thus... a group network of therapists makes all of us better! I make sure that every therapist here has different training, expertise and approaches and understandings of how to help clients. That way we all benefit... and that means we can pass our skills as a team onto you! It’s like getting an entire skilled clinical team of experts in one therapist! In addition, let’s say there are situations where I want to refer you out to seek additional services. Often I am just going to refer you to another member of my team. That way you are going to get a better chance of us collaborating closely together! Not so if I were just working on my own. I'd send you out to another professional who is working solo as well. The truth is we won't talk a lot. That means you as the customer get less than ideal care. That’s the whole idea of why I formed LATN, LA Therapy Network!

Therapy Is Not a Lifestyle.
Therapy is not a lifestyle, it is a process. Dealing with the difficulties of life can cause distressing feelings which can interfere with your relationships and general well being. My hope is that when confronted by such distress, our work together will serve to guide you through these obstacles. Used as a tool, therapy can restore or discover your sense of balance. As your therapist, my role is to assist you in utilizing your strengths to attain that goal. Through this process, we will identify the influences or circumstances that decrease your satisfaction and discover the tools needed to overcome them. No matter if you're experiencing anxiety, depression, or general dissatisfaction, we will work as a team to identify your goals and use your strengths to achieve them. We will create the tools that work best for you to maintain your balance and utilize should you experience distress in the future. Using brief-solution focused therapy or an insight-oriented long term approach, my clients have overcome grief/loss, identified strategies for coping in difficult relationships, developed parenting skills, resolved childhood trauma, eliminated self destructive behaviors and navigated phase of life difficulties. We will apply the approach that best suits you.

I feel that every individual is unique; therefore every therapeutic relationship is unique. For therapy to be effective, it is essential that you find a therapist with whom you feel comfortable and understood. The following is a brief introduction to my philosophy and practice to help you decide if I am a good match for your needs. What I value most about therapy could be described with these concepts: Authenticity. Empathy. Mindfulness. I believe that we as humans are very skilled at denying feelings that are scary or difficult. Problems occur when these repressed or denied feelings are projected out onto others or into destructive patterns of behavior and negative thought processes. I believe in the power of insight to foster change. I feel that psychotherapy is a collaborative experience, and that we participate in a journey together. The therapeutic relationship provides opportunities to examine past and current relationships with others and with the Self. I believe in the power of the “here and now.” By observing and reflecting upon what occurs within a session, we are able to examine and work through the deeper conflicts that occur in your life outside of therapy. By becoming mindful of the feelings and experiences that occur in the safe, contained space of the therapy room, light is shed upon deeply rooted impulses, losses, wants and needs that are often denied and locked in the shadows of the psyche. I respect the difficulty of undertaking the therapeutic journey, and therefore consider myself challenging yet empathic. I consider myself an active therapist, yet the session is not about me…the session is your time. I work with adults and adolescents on an individual basis.

Life is a journey, and in seeking therapy you are taking a step to shape that journey. Choosing a therapist can be difficult, complicated by therapy jargon. To put it simply, we will examine your past, evaluate your present and collaborate on your future. Therapy is not without risk. However, I will provide a safe environment and a non-judgemental ear for you to explore your life and its infinite possibilities. You will determine where you want to go and I will work with you to help you get there. I look forward to hearing from you. My approach is Eclectic combining Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral and Solution-Focused therapeutic interventions. To put it simply, we will examine your past, evaluate your present and take steps towards your desired future. I am an active, collaborator who will work with you to achieve your goals. I am open, honest and caring and will provide a safe place for you to continue your journey of self-discovery. I believe in accenting and utilizing your strengths so that you incorporate them into your daily life. I will support you and challenge you. I believe that any gains from therapy are in direct proportion to the participation of the client. In other words, I expect you to work at your therapy.

Couples Counseling and Individual Psychotherapy
I offer psychotherapy services that will help you explore whatever it is that might be holding you back from living a vital and robust life. I can help you get your life on a track that will truly put you in touch with “happiness.” When we’re speaking to someone who is truly listening to us in a non-judgmental way we end up saying things we didn’t know we were going to say. This is therapeutic. When we talk to someone whom we feel truly hears us and “gets” us, who accepts us as we are . . . we begin to feel freer to reveal to that person (and, by proxy, to ourselves) more of who we really are. This is therapeutic. The healing that occurs in this safe space of speaking and being heard and seen is rarely duplicated in the world outside the consulting room. If you’re fortunate enough to have someone who gives you this kind of attention, then you know how precious that is. I create a safe space for revealing and discovering who you are, how you’re being in the world, and, if necessary, why? I help you find in yourself your preferred mode of being, to create more effective ways of getting what you want out of your life, and I work with you to execute a plan to make that happen. My work with couples (of any sexual orientation) includes conflict reduction, improving communication, and creating more intimate and ultimately satisfying relationships. There is often a breakdown in communication that takes place within a couple and leads to conflict, tension and even the dissolution of the bonded relationship altogether. Luckily, couples therapy addresses what is being said between two people, what is being heard, and what to do when the couple needs help finding a way to re-connect and enjoy each other again. There are few things more painful than feeling like you’ve lost the love you once shared with someone. If you’re in this position, you know exactly what I mean. It’s heartbreaking to feel disconnected from your loved one. Maybe the passion is missing, your day to day routine has dulled the spontaneity you once had, or you just don’t seem to know how to talk to each other anymore. I love working with couples because I get to be part of a process that allows people to restore their ability to experience companionship in a healthy and satisfying way. I now offer Skype sessions for your convenience.

I have had experience treating people of all ages and walks of life. The one thing I have found that ties each of us together is the innate desire to progress and better ourselves. In life there will be specific circumstances, life transitions, relationship dynamics and/or traumas that may require us to seek out support and understanding. I have dedicated my professional career in trying to do just that for my clients and their families. Therapy can be an intimidating venture, therefor I have built my profession in creating an environment that makes my clients feel comfortable and safe. I use an eclectic approach in deciding techniques and/or therapy styles to utilize in session. I have learned that therapy has to be as unique as the individuals/couples/families I treat.

My greatest passion in life is to witness the growth I see in my clients. I find it very rewarding to watch others transform into the person they aspire to be---increasingly successful, peaceful, happy, loving, confident, strong, resilient, effective and inspired. My approach ventures beyond conventional psychotherapy to provide lasting change the first time around. Old, unwanted reactions and tendencies quickly disappear as positive thoughts, behaviors, and feelings take their place. I use mind-body approaches to incorporate a whole-system approach. I work at the deepest levels of the mind -- deeper than any other form of psychotherapy available, to integrate conflicting states of mind that are responsible for symptoms and maladaptive behaviors. Wounded parts of self are bathed in love, compassion and healing experiences in order to meet needs that were not adequately met in the past. As a result, your wounded parts of self get unstuck from the past and integrate into your most adult, Higher Self, allowing you to achieve wholeness and evolve into your healthiest and highest states of mind and being. This approach is equally effective for mild to severe issues.

Therapy Can Help!
I work with individuals, couples, adolescents and groups in my practice, providing psychotherapy and counseling. The counseling I provide is down-to-earth, and collaborative. Your therapy has to feel like a good fit, so I use my curiosity, and training to incorporate the right kind of approach for you. We look at ways in which you may be frustrated or stuck and learn new tools that can help you grow and reach your goals. My interests and focus include: depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, chronic pain, addictions, eating disorders and adolescents. I also like to work with people struggling with life transitions and both women's and men's issues. I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and work specifically with trauma, PTSD and the body. Likewise, if you're in a relationship and you're not getting along, suffering from a betrayal, or simply having trouble finding a partner, I can help you to understand what's going on and overcome your relationship challenges. I take a two-prong approach. 1) To help you find out "how did I get here?" so you don't have to re-visit this place again. 2) To help you learn new ways of relating, coping, and expressing yourself that foster good relationships, friendships, and work connections. If people have been telling you that you need to get over it or to move on, or if you think so yourself, all that does is add pressure to an already difficult experience. I take an "addition" approach - learning new tools and thinking about things in new ways - rather than a "getting rid of" approach (which doesn't work anyway!) Thoughts like - What's wrong with me? Why can't I be like other people - doesn't mean that something is ACTUALLY wrong with you! It could be that you're doing your best to cope with certain challenges, some of which may have arisen in your past. For example, if you were betrayed in a prior relationship and you don't trust your current partner, you're using a former coping strategy in a new situation. I would help you find new ways to deal with the lack of trust and other feelings that could be causing you to act in ways that may have hurt your partner and the relationship. As another example, let's say that there was a lot of fighting in your family and you closed yourself off in your room. Now, any time there's the potential for conflict you withdraw. You're protecting yourself from either being hurt or hurting the other person. But this relationship might be different from your past ones (including your family), and withdrawing could actually be harmful. With either example, one goal for therapy would be find new ways to cope with these feelings, as well as to understand that nothing is "wrong" with you. It's just that your actions may be counter-productive. The other goal is Empowerment; sometimes you may choose to withdraw or be untrusting - but the key is to choose and not automatically react that way. Another way I see therapy is putting puzzle pieces together. You may have all of the pieces, but we need to put them together to figure out what motivates you and why you feel the way you do - as well as making the changes you desire.

LIFE CHANGING PSYCHOTHERAPY
Different people respond to different methods of healing. For that reason I am trained in a number of different healing modalities such as: Humanistic Psychology— This approach provides you with a safe, unconditionally accepting experience in the therapeutic relationship. In this way we work to remove any toxic shame you may be carrying from the past. This can be particularly helpful if you come from a difficult family upbringing. Many of our issues we carry are a result of negative relationship patterns from the past. Humanistic psychology does reparative work by making the therapeutic relationship as accepting, non-judgmental, and healing as possible. Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Inner Child Work— These tools teach you how to relate to yourself in a loving, present time, productive manner. Most of us suffer from a strong “inner critic.” With the skills of Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and Inner Child work, you will learn to alleviate suffering generated by the self-critic and move forward. Cognitive Behavioral Work— The most commonly used type of therapy, CBT is effective for helping you move out of stagnation and into accountable action when working on achieving specific goals. Goals are set and tracked within the therapy so you are not alone in them. It is sometimes not enough to gain insight and do emotional healing in therapy, we often need to work toward concrete behavioral changes. CBT lets us do just that. Emotional Freedom Technique-- Also referred to as “tapping”, this healing modality is used specifically to reduce cortisol levels in your blood stream which will in turn ease depression and anxiety. Cortisol is the hormone released by the brain’s amygdala gland when under stress— sometimes resulting in paralyzing fears. Once cortisol levels reduce, you will often feel able to handle whatever is challenging you in a more direct, effective manner. How do you work in couples counseling? As well as being a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I am also a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist. If you are currently experiencing issues in your romantic relationship, it is important to find a therapist who has specific couples training to help you. Imago relationship therapy is one of the most renowned therapies in treating couples. Imago therapy is based on learning effective “mirroring” communication skills, being able to hold each person’s experience in equal esteem, and making decisions in a cooperative / safe way. In the process we heal the “unfinished business of childhood” (i.e. past hurts or issues) that we transfer over from our family of origin to our adult romantic partners. As a result of this kind of healing we gain greater maturity, intimacy, and fulfillment in relationships. See the Imago Couples Therapy section of this site for more. What about life coaching? I am also a Certified Strategic Intervention Life Coach. Tony Robbins and Cloe Madanes developed this form of life coaching. The coaching is based off Mr. Robbins’ research and seminars as well as Ms. Madanes’ experience as a psychotherapist and author. Together they coined the theory of “Human Needs Psychology”. This theory states that all of our behaviors and beliefs are driven by six basic needs. When these needs are made conscious we are better equipped at fulfilling them in ways that provide optimal growth and happiness. Life coaching might best be thought of as a form of unique behavioral therapy. That is, when you stop ruminating on the reasons things are not working out, and start changing your behavior to act in accord with what you say you want, your goals can be achieved. I also run men's groups. Please inquire for more info. If you're ready to take a step toward change, contact me. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to see if this might be a good fit for you.

Rehearse for Your Life!
Compassionate Work on Relationships W/ Self & Others
My practice can be summed up with the words of e.e. cummings: We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit. I call my work REHEARSE FOR LIFE because in our safe confidential sessions we can practice those difficult conversations and confrontations with ourselves, our families, our bosses and our loved ones. We can look at the choices we have before us and see what are the consequences of acting out in those circumstances. I have had a great deal of success working with problems of ADDICTION and COMMUNICATION ANXIETY. A Registered Drama Therapist and Marriage and Family Therapist, Bradford began his work in Creative Arts therapy working for the renowned STOP GAP THEATRE COMPANY of Southern California (the leading provider of drama therapy in the country- doing over 1000 events a year). Bradford worked in battered women’s shelters (with the women and their children), facilitated at Hoag Hospital in the inpatient drug and alcohol rehab program, worked with terminally ill children at Children’s Hospital of Orange County, as well as foster care, juvenile hall and many other outreach programs for at risk kids and adults. He does a program at the VA working with the Vets in what he lovingly refers as "Karaoke Therapy", as well as ongoing seminars at American Academy of Dramatic Arts, AFI, and other schools and organizations. Call me. Let's talk about how to move you forward into your light.

Therapy with YOU in Mind.
I am a licensed psychotherapist and passionately believe in cultivating health, well-being, and emotional resilience. I bring this passion to my work and I am dedicated to help others in the process of achieving a more balanced life. I have been in private practice for 13 years and have offices conveniently located in Pasadena and Beverly Hills. I believe good mental health begins with an ability to connect the dots of our individual “stories” in order to develop a coherent narrative and "make sense" of that story. To accomplish this, I collaborate with my clients utilizing a variety of interventions including mindfulness practices and EMDR to assist in emotional regulation and symptom relief. I also help my clients identify specific coping strategies that may have brilliantly served them in childhood and adolescence but may no longer be useful or needed today. I help individuals understand themselves, parents better understand their children and help partners express themselves to each other more effectively. My clients are excited by our work and share that they often feel more hopeful and resilient after our sessions. Additionally, they acquire practical tools to take into their day-to-day lives. My current practice includes adults and adolescents struggling with depression, anxiety and relationship difficulties. I also see couples, families and children. I have a special expertise in working with the adoption community and facilitate various groups and workshops throughout the year for adoptees as well as adoptive parents and birth parents. I conduct workshops promoting adoption awareness for educators and mental health professionals. I co-chaired and presented at the First Annual Adopt Salon Conference in November 2012. Featured presenters included Nancy Verrier, Adam Pertman, Marlou Russell and many other leaders in the adoption field. Additionally, as a California approved Clinical Supervisor, I provide supervision and guidance to interns and trainees accruing experiential hours toward MFT licensure. My areas of expertise include: • Relief from depression, anxiety and suffering • Helping couples and families communicate more effectively • Adoption issues: I work with adoptees, adoptive families and couples who are considering adoption. I facilitate support groups and psycho-education groups several times during the year for all members of the adoption and foster care community. • Adolescents struggling with school stress, concentration, peer relations and esteem issues • Parenting concerns • Grief, trauma and loss

Male & female therapists specializing in a wide variety of problems and treatment solutions. Day, evening, and weekend appointments available. Most major insurance accepted. Conveniently located in the S. Bay area of Los Angeles for over 30 years. Telephones answered 24/7. The learning and the healing that occurs during Psychotherapy and/or Counseling requires an active effort on the part of the client for the therapy to be successful. We strive to maintain the privacy of our clients so that you can feel comfortable sharing very personal matters and participating in the therapeutic process. Psychotherapy involves letting your therapist get to know you. In the course of doing so your therapist will begin to say things to you that help you develop a better self-awareness. We will help you realize skills you possess that you can utilize to help yourself and to get along better with others. We will often suggest ways that you can test ideas or practice new skills during the time between appointments. Psychotherapy has been shown to be very helpful. It can help lead to better relationships, improved communication, and a significant reduction of feelings of unhappiness or distress. It can help you resolve specific problems, or increase the range of choices in your life so that it can be more satisfying and productive. You should be aware that sometimes clients that start therapy feel worse before feeling better. Psychotherapy sometimes involves recalling unpleasant aspects of your past history. Our job is to help you understand and cope with all of this in a way that helps you to feel better and have a better future. Our staff is experienced in a wide range of therapeutic styles. Each of us has individual interests and skills. We work together as a team when different family members need different kinds of help. We are glad to coordinate our efforts with other professionals that might be helping you at the same time (such as your medical doctor). We try very hard to protect the privacy of our clients. California law protects the confidentiality of communications between a client and a mental health provider. Information about our clients is only released when we have your permission. We will always discuss with you, in advance, how we want to respond to requests from others about you.
