You may be seeking help because of an upsetting event in your life, or you may have struggled with a particular issue for a long time. I work collaboratively with my clients, from teens to adults, to bring forth their strengths, abilities, and inner resources so that they can achieve their dreams and goals. I also work with couples in stress and transition to help them respond instead of react, listen instead of argue, and create the connection they desire. Life can be very difficult at times. An experienced, caring therapist who listens and understands can be important in helping with the changes that life sometimes requires of us. I can you help you feel more grounded and empowered so that you can cope with these changes and better understand your reactions. I welcome people of all backgrounds and orientations and offer a sliding-scale fee to those who need it. Therapy isn't always easy, but it can change your life.

Understand yourself better, become more free and fulfilled
My practice is trauma-focused, psychodynamic and relational
As your therapist, first and foremost I will respect the courage of your decision to seek therapy and create a foundation of safety, acceptance, and collaboration. I strongly believe that symptom reduction (e.g., anxiety, panic, constant worrying, depression, high stress levels, complex PTSD), and an exploration of the root causes of your most distressing problems are both vital aspects of a helpful therapeutic experience. I foster a therapeutic relationship that honors my clients’ conscious minds as well as feelings, symptoms, and behaviors that they may find confusing and painful, but may be clues to presenting problems. I also consider my clients' current life situations holistically, collaborating with them to explore physical, nutritional, general life style, social support, and self-regulation issues to find areas of resilience as well as those that could be strengthened. Presently, I work with late teens and adults of all ages. I work with clients who struggle with symptoms which may be the aftermath of loss, abuse or other difficult experiences, or are simply perplexed with why they repeat distressing patterns which cause them pain. My clients may enter therapy to explore "why they have such difficulty regulating their emotions", or, "why they continue to pursue relationships that are ultimately painful", or, "why it's so hard to feel anything"; they may also enter therapy to receive assistance with specific issues such as life transitions, relationship difficulties, and work or academic problems. I also specialize in the impact of past and current interpersonal trauma or loss on parenting capacities, and assist my clients when these experiences interfere with being loving and supportive parents in the present. My work blends relational psychotherapeutic approaches, trauma-focused assessment and treatment, and psychoeducation for both clients and their families where appropriate. My trauma studies, which included EMDRIA-approved advanced EMDR training, as well as principles of Internal Family Systems and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, have solidified my longstanding belief that therapy must often go beyond talk and attend to messages from our physical selves that may provide clues to where we are most "stuck". While I have been trained in several modalities and my approach is eclectic, I will meet you where you are presently to address the problems that are most distressing to you.

I am a warm, engaging Clinical Psychologist. My orientation is cognitively-based, so therapy sessions are conversational, pragmatic, and focused primarily on the here-and-now. We work on setting therapeutic goals and collaborate on methods to attain them. In addition to my practice, I am active on the faculty at Weill-Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital. Anxiety is the body’s “hard-wired” false alarm. Defusing these alarms by facing dreaded fears is the central ingredient in overcoming shyness, panic attacks, or phobias. The art of treatment is knowing exactly how to fit the plan to the individual, and what procedures will best bring this about. In established relationships, people come to take each other for granted, which is the root of most other issues. The emphasis is on focusing upon what is or has been wonderful about the relationship, and acting on these strengths. How often are compliments, favors or gifts exchanged? This makes even significant conflict far easier to resolve! Activating oneself, self-care, exercise, taking pleasure and rediscovering a sense of accomplishment in the "little things" is a first and necessary step toward improvement. Surprisingly, progress becomes smoother once the inertia is overcome. Diets don't work. Individualized programs with a minimum of restriction and deprivation are motivating. Healthy foods, eaten frequently, and a positive sense of self go a long way. Moreover, bulimia is treatable, through carefully tailored food choices, mood management, and learning to tolerate a sense of being overwhelmingly full.

Spiritually Fluent Psychotherapist
What is your soul trying to tell you? The person you were a year ago, five years ago, ten years ago, is still inside of you. Each of these selves has a voice, an opinion, and as a result there is a lot of inner noise, which can drown out the voice of your soul, the divine spark within. Subscribing to the spiritual model, I view psychotherapy as a spiritual process. My role is to help you hear the voice of your soul so you can move from where you are to where you want to go. I incorporate insights and techniques from various spiritual traditions as well as from Transpersonal Psychology, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Twelve-Step Recovery, and Spiritual Self-Schema Therapy (SSST), in particular. The primary goal of SSST is to strengthen your spiritual self so healthier scripts (behaviors) can emerge in your life. As a psychotherapist, who is also an intuitive and a rabbi, I am fluent in spirituality, and can help you to create a spiritual practice to enhance your psychotherapy.

Imagine having the tools to explain clearly to your partner how you feel about something he/she said or didn't say… Imagine being able to speak to your children in a way that conveys how much you love them, but also firmly establishes limits and boundaries… Imagine the relief in being able to acknowledge, both to yourself and to another person in a safe, confidential therapeutic setting, feelings of hatred and rage toward someone in your life... Imagine being able to clearly and confidently state, "I want my future in 10 years to look like…." and having a mapped out plan to achieve it... We all have struggles. It takes courage to decide to take ourselves off "auto-pilot" and to confront and work through our problems. It takes courage to decide we are ready to look at ourselves, at our patterns of interacting in relationships and in decision-making. By deciding to look into therapy, you have taken the very difficult first step in this process…. I am a licensed psychologist practicing in Manhattan and in Great Neck, Long Island for 10+ years. I work with my patients using an interactive, supportive, and compassionate approach to help them to better understand and manage issues related to: Anxiety Depression Conflicted Relationships Parenting Struggles Work/Career Conflict Trauma Grief Stress/Anger Management Identity Issues Eating and Body Image We cannot erase negative past experiences. We can, however, work together to help you to better understand and to respond to these experiences in more constructive ways. Using a variety of solution-focused and insight-oriented therapeutic approaches, I will help you to become more aware of your long standing, negative behavioral patterns which are getting in your way of resolving challenges and of establishing and meeting your goals in life. In doing so, you will be better equipped to enact changes that will lead to greater happiness and a sense of well-being. Feel free to call me for a consultation.

An individual who has been diagnosed with the herpes virus may request couples services to assist in negotiating herpes-related issues with former partners or with new ones. Family counseling, including adolescents or children, may be indicated when an adolescent or child has been (regrettably) exposed to information regarding a parent or caregiver having received a herpes diagnosis - or when the individual who has been diagnosed is, themselves, an adolescent or child. Group Counseling or Psychotherapy Following initial stabilization, individuals who have been diagnosed with the herpes virus, or those who are closest to them, often receive great benefit from talking, within a safe and supportive environment, with others whose circumstances are similar. Workshops and Educational Seminars Workshops and educational seminars are offered to physician groups, mental health facilities, hospitals, and other interested community entities. Fees are negotiated based on the location and length of the workshop or semin

CBT - the Answer to Anxiety and Stress.
My approach to therapy is aimed at achieving tangible progress, working with clients to improve their daily lives. I direct a team of psychologists on the Upper West Side of New York, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to work with clients. CBT is an evidence-based therapy which is action-oriented, short-term, and practical. It is a powerful tool for addressing depression, stress, relationship or identity issues, family problems, fears, or traumatic memories. CBT can help you improve your mood, reduce your anxiety, and enrich your relationships Traditional therapy often focuses heavily on self-knowledge and insight. While self-knowledge is helpful, usually it is not enough to produce real, tangible improvement. If this has been your experience, it may be time for a new kind of therapy – one which is oriented toward action. I believe that understanding ourselves is just part of the process, and I will do my best to help you take the steps which come after understanding and lead to growth.

Experienced, Empathic Psychotherapist
I have been a psychotherapist in private practice for over 25 years. I work with individuals and couples and specialize in a wide range of treatment issues including, anxiety, depression, relationship and marriage problems. I have a particular interest in working with people who have concerns regarding intimacy and problems developing long-term relationships, separation anxiety, parenting, creative blocks, empty nest syndrome, chronic pain and family and work conflicts. I work with many young adults who struggle with transitioning into adulthood and finding their own voices. Although the idea of starting therapy can be scary, it can also be exciting. Therapy is a process of discovery about you which can help you create the life and relationships that really work. It is a process where I help you to talk and learn about your thoughts and feelings. As we focus on the issues you bring to therapy, our talks will affect the ways in which you relate to the world and the impact the world has on you. My clinical approach is not based on one particular theory. I don’t see what I do as “one size fits all.” As I get to know you, the theoretical approach or approaches I take will evolve from our work together. I recognize and respect how different we all are. This means I make a particular effort to work without judgment. I am available for sessions in my office or on the phone.

Your Child Can Feel Better!
“Does your child or teen suffer from anxiety, depression, sleep issues or other difficulties at school or at home? These problems can cause a great deal of pain, sadness, and frustration for a child and his or her family. Some children are faced with the challenge of adjusting to a major change in their lives, such as a death in the family, a medical illness, or a divorce. Others have a learning disability or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) which can impact their self-esteem and functioning at school and at home. Some children have difficulty making friends. My aim in working with children and adults is to help them to identify their strengths, to cope with weaknesses, and to ultimately meet their goals. I strive to help your child feel happier, more confident and better able to cope with difficulties. Therapy can help alleviate the suffering of your child and facilitate growth and development. I meet with parents regularly to discuss your concerns or just to check in. Please feel free to call me if you would like to schedule a consultation or if you have any questions or concerns!”

Therapy is a Guided Process of Self-Discovery
In my private practice I seek to create a warm and caring place for you to strengthen your self-confidence and develop skills that enhance your personal growth. I view therapy as a guided process of self-discovery. Whether it begins in response to a traumatic event or at a time when positive change is sought, old patterns of behavior and thought can stand in the way of healthy communication and exchange of feelings. Therapy provides access to methods that strengthen skills so that new and healthier thoughts, feelings and behaviors take the place of old unhealthy ones. The therapuetic approach is determined by your needs and is strength based. The process is guided by the belief that you already possess the ability to make things better. It takes courage to reach out to a professional therapist. My style is down-to-earth and emphasizes supportive listening so that you feel understood. I provide specific feedback throughout the process that helps you work toward your goals. In working together, we can discover the strategies that work best for you. Counseling services are available to individuals, couples, children, adolescents and families.

Are you seeking change, are you in crisis, does your life seem to be falling apart? I can help you ease the suffering or crisis that exists. I work through issues by understanding Relationship: relationship to the self, with your family, with your love relationships, relationship with friends and colleagues, and how to sustain these relationships. Another major life and soul issue is finding your purpose, and creating a vision of the future, which are the keynotes to happiness. I am informed by a number of theoretical traditions and techniques for change, i.e. positive psychology, psychoanalysis, transpersonal psychology (inner child archetype work), cognitive/behavioral psychology, psychosynthesis, and soul psychology (the Science of the Soul). Whatever the tradition, however, loving relationship is the focal point of the work.
